Prince working on Jazz Album with Anita Baker!

Why is no one excited about this?? I hope that when it comes out it creeps into the grammy's like that time that Tony Bennett won album of the year and took it from all the kiddie performers yes dancing jig whistle

Jazz is where Prince should stay from now On... the pop crap/elevator music he's doing needs to go... he should stick to funk/r&b/rock/Jazz

Same goes for Mariah, but she's such a stupid air-head she has no clue (thats another subject) blackeye

oh yeah, because Prince's idea of jazz in 2009 is Elixer and Bria's album is setting the whole damn world on fire isn't it? rolleyes

and his jazz offerings earlier this decade (C-NOTE, Xpectation, NEWS) were the EPITOME of elevator music. pleasant, well-played elevator music, but still...

And, I'm not sure this would be a good pairing. Anita's productions tend to have a warmth and sophistication to them that I don't see Prince being able to replicate in a way that'd be true to her sound.

To that end, I think Prince should stay far away from jazz. He's a great musician but he's a far way from being a jazz master.

Noooo, not when it comes to production and engineering. Not in recent years.
To be fair, some of the tracks on Elixer have a sophisticated production feel to them, but those are few and far between for P.

On Anita's and Sade's work, sophistication and nuance come standard.

Both Madhouse records are boring and uninspired.

Jazz lives of different musicians feeding of each other's playing.
That is not possible when one sole musician records the entire album by himself (with the exception of the sax).

Let's face it, Prince is not a Jazz musician, and most of his attempts to play Jazz usually end up being pretty embarrassing. And you know what? It's okay that he's not Jazz musician. He has many other musical qualities.

How did I miss this original post? lol Okay, here we go ...

-He has some of the MOST INCREDIBLE Jazz/Funk musicians at his disposal, who could give this project CLASSIC status "out tha box":
-Sheila E. (who got her start w/George Duke)

Sheila is foremost a Latin percussionist. Her drumming is predominantly Funk, not Jazz.

-Maceo Parker (NOTHING needs to be said!!!!)

Yes, SOMETHING needs to be said. lol Maceo is a Funk saxophonist, not a Jazz saxophonist. He even promotes his own shows under the motto 2 percent Jazz, 98 perecent funky stuff.

-Eric Leeds

A great Jazz player, which is why Prince picked him for the Madhouse projects. But with all due respect to Eric, he never made a mark on the Jazz scene as a soloist.

-Renato Nato

Yes, a good Jazz pianist.

-Mike Phillips

Funk and Rock.

-Rhonda Scott

Funk and bits of Jazz.

-Michael B.

A Funk drummer all the way.

-Sonny T.

Funk.
.....and so on & so on!!!!!
cool cool cool cool cool

lol lol lol

Bottom line, just because an artist surrounds himself with a couple of Jazz musicians, it doesn't make him a great Jazz musician. Prince has diddled around on some Jazz flavored projects, but he has never made a serious attempt to record a Jazz album. He's respected by Jazz musicians, but not for being a Jazz musician, but for being an all-rounder. Prince has never even recorded with some Jazz greats, besides a couple of attempts with Miles Davis, which did not even result in a studio session (sending tapes back and forth is not really what makes a Jazz song virbrant and interesting).
And I don't know why you mention Funk in the context of Jazz - Funk is an entirely different genre which is much more related to Soul and R&B than to Jazz. There are very few Funk and Jazz musicians on both sides who have successfully crossed over. Prince has always been much more influenced by and interested in Funk. So no matter how many times you say that "nothing else needs to be said", you are waaaay off here. And please tell me which Jazz musicians give the Madhouse project "classic status".

I'm sayin'. lol Why can't people be content with the idea that Prince is a highly talented musician and artist and one of the world's greatest entertainers? He doesn't have to be a master of every genre. What's next, Prince is the new Beethoven because he send some tapes back and forth with Clare Fisher?

Something hard to understand? Jazz albums live of the energy created by various musicians playing and improvising together. That's where the name of the genre comes from - jazzin' around.

If you got one person laying down each instrument by himself on a separate track and mix it together, then you got an extremely stale Jazz track. This may work for other musical styles, but it doesn't work for Jazz, because it prohibits the most important artistic element of Jazz - improvisation.

maybe. see how easy it is to say "maybe" or "I think"? lol

I think if you can have an extremely stale "jazz" track with a group of musicians you can have a good one with just one musician

and where did you come up with that definition for "jazz"?

Jazz History 101, back in College. smile

Yes, you can have a stale track with a group of musicians. But once again, the essence of Jazz is improvisation. And when you record a track on your own, playing all instruments, you limit down improvisation - unless you can play at least four instruments simultaneously (even then it would be boring because the song would lack the creative input of multiple personalities). For that very reason you find very, very few Jazz albums recorded by just one artist (even though many Jazz musicians are multi-instrumentalists). It takes the live out of the song.

Then show me one, just one, influential or important or at least very good Jazz album which was recorded by just one musician, playing all instruments. Just one. smile
