Contest Song: whats the story?

ive had this mp3 for a couple of years and always wondered what it was.
i picked up that prince released this instrumental on the npgmc for members to sing over or something?

what year was this? can anyone explain the full story please?

The NPG song "Contest Song" (Instrumental) - available since August 29, 2001 from The NPG Music Club - 4 premium members only (bonus) - was a new instrumental composed by The NPG.

According 2 The NPGMC - (The NPGMC - Contest Song):

"We would like 2 invite all the Premium Members of the Club 2 download this track and let ur inspiration flow. Create lyrics 2 this song and record them over the trax - add ur color, ur flavor ur NRG. We want 2 hear the most original and controversial lyrics u can come up with - aim HIGH! [...] We will listen 2 them and NPG Music Club choose the one we find the most original and controversial. We will then release it in2 the NPG Music Club in the following months 4 all 2 hear."
