Prince: Purple Medley EP Do i call it an E.P? A single?
I dont really know what it is. Its not that great, a load of remixed hits all mashed into 11 or so minutes. Whats the story behind this? Why did prince release it? Was it his choice to release it? Was there any hype surrounding this at release? Did it sell well? Looking forwards to hearing from the ever helpful org crowd greyhoodiegirl x

If didn't do very well in the charts and just about broke the top 100.

It may not have done well, but I liked it. It was real interesting to hear new takes on some of the classic material.

Songs not that great but I do like the cover of the single:
Making love and music are the only things worth fighting for.

I agree with djdaffy - it's a nice collector's item. I have on vinyl and cd.

The samples used, are not samples in some cases
They are new recordings of some of the classic tunes It's fun sorting them out as you listen The right to free discussion is protected!!

I like some of the new recordings in this.
Would have made more sense around the time The Hits/B-Sides was released. As it was, it just sort of came out of nowhere for no reason.

There's a video for the full length version too, with new footage as well as old. It's pretty interesting since a lot of the vocals and music isn't sampled, it's new, and interesting choices (Sexy Dancer, A Love Bizarre, Peaches & Cream, nice pun etc - kind of foreshadows the whole mash-up thing). It was issued as a single in the UK around the time of the Gold tour in 1995, so it was used as promo for that at the time (although Prince was promoting Exodus at the time). I think by anyone else this would've been seen as a total sell out thing, but Prince's take on it is fun and interesting, so it never really seems naff, IMO. [Edited 4/11/09 11:39am]

I totally love PM. It worked great 4 a party I did with over 600 guests. As they entered, I had PM on blast. I noticed the crowd totally feeling the music, and overhead a few people calling up friends 2 get over here asap.
It will diffidently get the party started. Good 2 listen 2 while walking I was totally surprised 2 see the owner of the club had an oversized photo in a beautiful gold frame of Prince as u entered his club and here I am blowing Purple Medley with people enjoying the music and banging the head.

I remember hearing the medley on the AMA's, when the dancers performed to it, then he came out and lip synced The Gold Experience stuff. IIRC, it was also the 10th anniversary of We Are The World, and a lot of artists got up and sang. Prince was up there, but didn't sing. When Quincy Jones stuck a microphone in his face, Prince took out his sucker and stuck it in Q's face. I found the maxi single later.
I don't mind listening to it. You can almost think of it as one of the first real mash-ups. Prince resings the songs, FYI, and the instrumentation is all new, played by the NPG at the time, I think. I like that he sings "Irresistible Bitch" over the "Sexy MF" groove, etc. I had one mixed the two tracks together for one long track (the PM and the B-sides mix from Kirk J). I do remember hearing the 3 minute version on the radio a bit back in Tulsa when it was out. Of course the absolute best Prince mix/mashup is from DJ Foefur. I don't know who he/she is, but that shit ROCKS. I've been listening to that for years, since it first came out.
