I think the Madonna-bashing is pretty unfair. While I would rate Prince much higher as a musician and songwriter, I think Madonna is a lot smarter when it comes to staying in the spotlight.

I think you really have to look beyond the '80's... Madonna scored major hits in the '90's (Frozen anyone) AND the '00's (Hung Up, 4 Minutes, Music, etc.). She was able to release platinum records even to this day, and she's attached name to major other artists and producers. Oh, and she was also able to release critically aclaimed records after her peek (Ray Of Light).

Now look at Prince... To the mainstream audience, Prince has been invisible since The Most Beautiful Girl In The World. And it's not like he hasn't been trying to reach the mainstream again (Rave, Musicology, 3121, etc.), but he just made poor creative choices... In this regard, Madonna has been far superiour.

And about Michael: why the hell do people suggest Prince is better just 'cause he released 8 albums in the '80's and Michael only 2..?? So quantity over quality for you then...? confused

1st let me state that the amount of hate for madonna on the board is sickening.in the 80s the big 3 were micheal madonna and prince.madonna is just as important as mj and prince.unlike the current pop females madonna had purpose.she actualy thought about the music she was making.she was good.no she wasnt the best singer..and she knew it.but she had statements she felt she had to make.that makes her an artist.she took from michael the power of the music video..how to get yourself seen.from prince she mixed both religon and sex with high quality dance music..and she kinda dressed like him in the begining too.she paved the way for janet,whitney,mariah..u know the other queens of pop...to sell in big numbers.and get big respect.her quality of music is high(really it is) compared to other pop acts.steady output .yeh she (along wih mj and prince)gave birth to a music industry that is more industry than music..because of the way they sold and performed and the impact they had.madonna also crossed over.not many white female pop stars did that.lucky star, holiday, like a virgin, into the groove, like a prayer were all r&b hits as well.top 25 actually.like a virgin top 10.yeah she's important.

but..to answer the question

Prince
Madonna
Michael Jackson(the most well known and best selling for sure.but mike just couldnt seem to get past thriller.)

disagree - madonna i highly overrated.
MJ continued high quality output beyond Bad - Dangerous is one of his best works. HIStory has good tracks. His output is less in volumae than Prince though.

I'd Put Prince and MJ joint no 1. Madonna down in the next division.

but out of those 9 lps prince released in the 80's 4 have been highly critically acclamied.dirty mind,1999.purple rain and sign o' the times.
and let me elaborate on that.they have kept their critical acclaim throughout time.3 of those appeared on vh1's 100 greatest albums of all time(which was voted on by other artists not by critics or the public so no popularity contest)

MJ is highly over-rated. Off The Wall is great, Thriller is great, Bad has aged terribly, and Dangerous has a couple of decent tracks. Everything else is trash'n'rehash.

C'mon man HIStory is one of his best, very underrated that one.

it was a greatest hits package.thats like saying the hits/b-sides is one of princes best lps

Based on the sheer quantity and quality of Princes 80's output this should be pretty simple. Unfortunantly when the biggest selling album of all time is dropped in to the mix the decision is much more difficult.

I've never been a fan of Madonna (hype over substance) and with the exception of Like a Prayer, I don't rate her musically at all.

So I reckon Prince, Michael with Madonna a very distant third.

David Bowie's work during the 70's V's Prince during the 80's would be an interestinng topic biggrin

you are on to something there.that would be a good topic

I think he was referring to the disc of new material.

And he's right... HIStory is by far Michael's strongest solo record. It may be a little self-indulgent here and there but his sincerity and passion on that album cannot be denied.

As for Madonna, I can't say I've ever really rated her, although Ray Of Light had some decent tracks.

Also, Triumph is as much a MJ solo record as OTW or Thriller if you ask me.

Songs like Heartbreak Hotel and Walk Right Now are golden MJ moments. Infact, apart from the dire Wondering Who the other brothers contribute hardly anything to the mix.

Every self-respecting music fan should own this:

I'd take it over OTW any day of the week...

I'm looking from the perspective of their overall work
Michael released 5
Prince released 10
George Michael released 4 (I replaced Madonna lol )
