How did 1999 II come to be? Does any one know why Prince released 1999 II separately to 1999 - they are almost identical bar a couple of songs. Was 1999 II an afterthought?

some people think that 1999 was too liberal so they had it killed and elected 1999 II to bring it back to the conservative side of life. Than after 1999 II died they elected Purple Rain XVI to lead us. You CANNOT use the name of God, or religion, to justify acts of violence, to hurt, to hate, to discriminate- Madonna

Would you like to explain what you're actually talking about then?
As Prince has never released an album called "1999 II". (fact)

As Prince has never released an album called "1999 II". (fact) Could he be referring the UK release of the 1999 that split the album into two parts? Edit: Or was it simply that a track was dropped? Can't recall at the moment, but either way, I think that's what the OP is getting at. [Edited 3/23/09 17:21pm]

In the UK it was originally released as a 6 track single album. Then later the full 11 track double album was released. (after Prince became more successful in Europe) But nothing called "1999 II" was ever released. [Edited 3/23/09 17:23pm]

I still think this is is what he's on about, regardless of whether it was actually called 1999 II or not.

Or "1999- The New Master"??? That's what I wondered at first. But they said that the tracks were "almost identical bar a couple of songs" which doesn't fit the description of any official release. Still waiting for them to explain what they're talking about and give some kind of explanation or tracklist or something.

Well, close your eyes, imagine the rapper being removed, and you're almost back in 1982...

I think the 2 discs of 1999 were released separately in Brazil.
But they didn't share any tracks, so this doesn't fit the description either.

Slightly off-topic: I remember getting my 1999 cassette and D.M.S.R. was missing! No point there, just reminiscing.
1 LP, 2 cassettes and 1 CD later . . .

1 LP, 2 cassettes and 1 CD later . . . true, same with the first cd I had. How are you going to cut DMSR and leave Free? My Legacy

Yes, there were quite a few variations of 1999 put out on various formats.
The single LP version was released in quite a few territories outside the US (UK, Europe, Australia and a few others) The first issues on CD had D.M.S.R. missing (as CDs couldn't handle the full running time back then... they can now of course) There were also a few variations on cassette. A common difference was the Movement of "Free" onto side one to try and even out the running times. There was also a cassette edition which included "How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore" on the album too. [Edited 3/23/09 17:45pm]
