Honestly, Prince didn't start cursing much in his onstage shows and lyrics until the 90's. It was fine, but slightly forced...

I said the same and agree
and that had a lot 2 do with the new associates/band members

I don't necessarily want the dude to start swearing like a sailor or anything, but if he would quit changing the words to his older songs, that would be awesome.

True, it was the subject matter & his attitude as much as the words themselves. His most famous shockingly dirty song is Darling Nikki, and is there even a single bad word on it (I'm not sure what he says during the screaming part)?

Right and that only became 'shockingly dirty' because a mother heard her daughter listening to it when she heard the word 'masturbate'
In a lot of Americans mind this is a sin (boy grow hair on their palms or stunt their growth or it leads to darker sexual urges)

No curse words at all and during the scream non either

The song basically is about a 'sexually experience' woman named Nikki who he had a wild night with and fell for and she disappears

I knew a girl named Nikki, I guess U could say she was a sex fiend
I met her in a hotel lobby masturbating with a magazine
She said, “How'd U like 2 waste some time”
And I could not resist when I saw little Nikki grind

She took me 2 her castle and I just couldn't believe my eyes
She had so many devices, everything that money could buy
She said, “Sign your name on the dotted line”
The lights went out and Nikki started 2 grind

Ow, Nikki!

The castle started spinning or maybe it was my brain
I can't tell U what she did 2 me, but me body will never be the same
Her lovin' will kick your behind, oh, she'll show U no mercy
But she'll sho'nuff, sho'nuff show U how 2 grind

Darlin' Nikki, oh!

I woke up the next morning, Nikki wasn't there
I looked all over, all I found was a phone number on the stairs
It said, “Thank U 4 a funky time
Call me up whenever U wanna grind”

Yeah, Nikki, oh!
Oh, come back Nikki, come back!
Your dirty little Prince wanna grind, grind, grind, ...!

Funny, I remember back then people commenting on how careful the usage of grind was instead of going 'all the way'

I think grind works and works with how 'experimental' the subject is

playing baby i'm a star backwards will reveal swearing

listen closely 2 new position and u'll hear another word 2 call a kitty

and the song it does contain the line with a F word not 2 mention a certain chant in it's gonna b a beautiful night

Still those are not prominent examples. I listened for years before I ever noticed that stuff--not quite Let's Pretend We're Married

well isn't that the beauty of music tho? all the layers underneath but when brought 2 the surface, it's like discovering something that was always there but u didn't recognize big grin
man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

If U have to do all that to hear a curse word, it can't be that bad

The only curse word on the Purple Rain album is.... hmmmm there are none

New Position, spells out P U S S Y and is done in such a muted way, you have to listen really carefully

have u heard the backwards message in baby i'm a star? cause if u did u would know there is a F bomb in there

If not cursing is part of his evolvement then I am all for it. I do have issues however with people who come off as "self-righteous" and I have felt in the past he was on the borderline with this. Can I just damn that Larry Graham !!!

yeah definitely. It's just some people have the impression that prince has always cursed or just started talking about god, when the truth is more like he hasn't always cursed, but he has always talked about god smile

I think it would throw me offguard, but that's about it.

Bruce Springsteen threw a "fucking" on his new album. Didn't change my opinion of it, just kind of surprised me.

No I haven't, I love the layers, years after the song came out I'm still finding out something new

But the F word is not on the song on the album, If I have to play it backwards and buy something to assist in me hearing it etc etc it's 'not officially on the album'

There are no curse words on the Purple Rain lp
the F word is used on the Bside Erotic City

That's true, We actually didn't hear about 'God' in a defined way until
till God the Dance Electric (Purple Rain Bside) and most of the 70's-Daimonds & Pearls albums had very little curse words

But Controversy talked about in a round about why also using the Our Father Prayer
Anne Christian is dealing more with a social system than a religious idea
Sexuality mentions the 2nd Coming but everything is vague, not in a defined Christian way, but Prince's idea of utopia

I Would Die 4 U originally is about his love 4 someone

Around the World in a Day sings about the Ladder & Temptation
Parade actually has nothing directly about 'spirituality' outside of an idea of heave thru Sometimes It Snows In April

Dream Factory had a bit more on it:Others Here With Us, Heaven, A Place In Heaven

Sign O the Times: the Cross
Black Album: nothing
Lovesexy: Eye No, (I still don't know what Anne Stesia is about) but I love it
Batman soundtrack (?) nothing?

Graffiti Bridge had something here or there

wow maybe Prince really didn't get into it much until much later
We know he's sung about it but it was always in his utopia (God gave sex so do it) idea

the 1st 3 albums had nothing about it.

The root of all his swearing and cursing has a lot 2 do with Ol' Skool Company and the character he built up. So, where he may not have cursed in 1978; the idea "Soft and Wet" was equivalent 2 a hot twat. In '79 singing about lesbians. In '80, fellatio and cunnilingus. In '81 masturbation. Some more fellatio in '82 but this time, u're not just going down "eye sincerely want 2 fuck the taste out of ur mouth." some self-masturbation is '84 by Nikki. Yet, this one did it 4 Mrs. Al Gore (formally known as Tipper) who heard her daughter singing 2 it and thus the birth of PMRC (Parental Music Research Center). Naming this song as the most filthest song recorded and #2 was Sheena Easton's "Sugar Walls," written by Alexander Nevermind. And his canvas just creatively got bigger over time.
u asked me if eye heart u, it's automatic
