An early tracklisting for "diamonds and pearls"

Accoring to Wiki, it was this:

1)"Daddy Pop"
2)"Walk Don't Walk"
3)"Schoolyard"
4)"Strollin'"
5)"Willing and Able"
6)"Diamonds and Pearls"
7)"Insatiable"
8)"Money Don't Matter 2 Night"
9)"Horny Pony"
10)"Live 4 love"
11)"Something Funky This House Comes"
12)"Call The Law"
13)"The Flow"

No "gett off", no "cream"? This album woulda bombed right? No "push" either, which is one of my favs LOL. "Something funky this house comes" is terrible. "Call the law" by comparison is genius. The original version of the "flow" sounded awful on my boot, but i loved the way it turned out on "symbol".

Anyway, I actually really like "horny pony", and it sucks it got left off (miles better then that dredge of a track, "live for love"). ! Starting with "daddy pop" aswell? Don't mind the track but hardly a trailblazing opening is it?

But honestly, this album was heading for disaster

What do you think?

It just sorta drags. Its quite unlike anything in his catalog though. Almost has prog influences, but somehow, just doesn't go anywhere.

Gett Off was the last song added to complete the 'released' version of D&P....this has happen on numerous occasions with Prince albums....thieves in the temple was a last minute late addition to Graffiti Bridge for example....I wonder how many versions of each album there has been before Prince finally said 'that's it'... many no doubt..and a few that we don't know about too....since Prince left WBs its been harder and harder to get concrete info on Prince's studio habits and aborted projects - there have been many...makes me wonder what is happening to Lotus Flower & the other 2 albums...has prince left them as is for the last month or 2....or is he still tweaking?

I can't believe that he was seriously considering "Horny Pony" for the album disbelief That's a weak, dumb song that shouldn't have even appeared as a B-side.

Im always dubious of these "early configurations". Ive seen early configs of Purple Rain, Parade, Sign O The Times / Crystal Ball /Dream Factory etc., and im not sure Prince ever intends a lot of them to be the final product. Maybe their configured to give WB execs an idea of where he's heading with the record.

I understand that someone as prolific as prince will always change things right to the last second, but the very first configurations of Parade / Purple Rain look a long way off being complete records.

Yeah, a lot of them are W.I.P.

Sometimes a track is used more for it's 'feel' or type (tempo/mood), with the intention that it will be replaced later down the line. An example that I think I recall accurately is 'A Wonderful Day' from the early configs of Dream Factory.

Nah,it's a weak B-side song lol plus, the "horny pony" concept was already used on Lovesexy and "Le Grind".He was recycling an old idea.

I think early configurations are fun.You get a chance to see what could have been.I was very impressed with the early configuation of 'TGE'....when it included songs like "Days Of Wild","Interactive" and "Ripopgodazippa".I was kinda disappointed when those songs were taken off the album.

Yeah, I think Prince can often be guilty of trying to guild the lily.

Sometimes it works though - Gett Off and Cream, certainly not two of my favourites, but they were big hits. smile

I do not know what to think of this. I would really miss Cream and Gett Off, but I have always enjoyed Call the Law and Schoolyard is one of my top 5 Prince songs of all time.

Horny Pony! What a piece of shit. And what is with Rosie's goofy comments in the whole song? "He is just sooooo weird." Isn't that the point?

"That's nastyyy." haha

Sure is babee. Real hiphoppers had to laugh at this shit.

since all the outtakes i've heard from this project are worse
than the album material, i can't help but wonder if there are
any more songs from these sessions that we've not heard yet.

the early config of this album included horrible demo versions
of nearly all the songs. it's incredible how much the songs
were improved by the time they were released because some of
the demo tracks for this album are amongst the worst demo cuts
in his entire career imo.

still, i've always been hoping he would release two or three
more tracks from this period that we've not heard before. if
he ever did a crystal ball II type release i would love for
it to have some unknown D&P outtakes so we could replace the
tony m featured songs with simply prince tracks. that would
do the album a world of good.

i still like these:

thunder
diamonds and pearls
cream
strollin'
willin and able
gett off
walk don't walk
money don't matter 2 nite
insatiable
live 4 love

but with just a few more prince solo songs and perhaps one
more npg song, like perhaps "schoolyard" and "i wonder" or
even "the grand progression" as album closer, this album
could have stood the test of time a lot better. right now,
it is dragged down hugely by the raps and cheesy fx.

anyway, didn't he also write "love..thy will be done" at
this time?

wow. talk about a difference.

What?!?! But we're talking about the dance that every parent fears the most! It's gotta be hot.

I love Horny Pony...as a B side. It's definitely not A-list album material, but for a B-side, no problem

I also love the "Horny Pony getcha gonna" rhyme.

It's really easy to make your own edits removing the raps with a wave editor. A few of us have done that on here and have made Diamonds & Pearls and prince virtually Tony M. free.

As much as I love some of the outtakes from around this time like "Open Book", "I Wonder", "Love...Thy Will Be Done" and "Spirit", they really don't go with the rest of this material because they're much too programmed sounding to fit in with the big band/hip hop hybrid sound he was going for at the time.

Housequake!! LOL.....actually that's not far from the truth...but various people here (and there) have shared a lot of knowledge which, like most, I am more than happy to pass on...The Vault (book) is a must although I must say I have only read that recently....I hope someone takes over that project, its needing a big update now wink

people who have the inside scoop are the best resource for finding things out -thankfully there are a lot of good people in the 'prince universe' who don't mind sharing their stories.... its not as though Prince will ever spill the gravy!
