The more I think about it, the more I think this tracklist is fanmade work, that amazon.com and Target has picked up. Reasons why I think so:

1. The album is called Lotusflow3r (in one word), not Lotus Flow3r (two words)

2. As stated on lotusflow3r.com, it's Elixer not Elixir.

3. As someone else said here, 4ever should follow Wall Of Berlin.

4. "$" and "Dreamer" are two different songs. In the tracklist it looks as though it is one song called "$ Dreamer"

I might be wrong, but I just think something looks not right...
[Edited 3/6/09 5:53am]

All can be chalked up to hastily entered typos. It's on Target and Amazon, both companies have legal departments, fact checkers and editors. The lists are still up as provided to them. It's all we have right now.

I would blame Prince's camp for this list and typographic errors, no matter if it's the correct order or not. Also, don't discount hidden tracks. He's done it before.
If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

Glad to see 'Feel Better, Feel Good, Feel Wonderful' is on there. Loved the snippet we got ages ago and wondered if that'd ever be released. Really looking forward to Lotus flow3r. Its the strongest set of tunes i've heard pre-release for ages for a Prince CD.

OKay, I guess I missed something, so someone please be kind enough to fill me in:

Isn't this a Target exclusive? Why would it be listed on Amazon?

Amazon and Target are partners. If you look at the bottom of Target's pages it says "powered by amazon.com".

I'm afraid I'll have to get all nerdy on you for a sec: It's 88mph, not 85.

Still funny though!

Course it is, I think I was thinking 1985...doh!

LOLOLOLOL I had to pause a bit and pick through the cobwebs in my brain because 85 mph just didn't sound right to me.Without checking the actual data, 88 sounds right. My b-friend at the time was gadget/Back to the Future/nerd crazy. And I was Prince-KUH-RAY-ZUH (oh yeah...saw Purple Rain tour for 2nd time in '85). Ahh, high school junior year...

Thanks for sparking that flashback!

And once again Prince dumps three albums that are barely 40-something minutes. "Will this do?" seems to be the motto at PP for the past decade or so. Oh, but I forget: he must keep some of the rest so he can sell crappy MP3s (if we're lucky) via his website -- which you will have to pay to access.

One of these days someone will have to write an "If Prince ran the Apple store..." parody. Something like:
- you need to pay money to get in without knowing what is exactly inside,
- there's unpaid kooks out front telling people how this store is "teh best evah!" and how it will change your life,
- if you buy something it breaks down after a year
- the lifetime guarantee was only applicable while the store stayed open,
etcetera.

When was this site supposed to launch? Oh yeah, I keep forgetting that this website isn't so much about Prince connecting with his fans or delivering them music fast and reliably. No, it's supposed to obey by rules set by a major retailer who wants exclusivity.

Meanwhile Trent Reznor is releasing his music directly to the fans, is making a ton of money (and pleasing just about all of his fans), and is the top seller at Amazon MP3s with an album that you could legally download for free.

I agree, who cares? Why coming here to promote what other artists do anyway? Not to mention that nobody knows how long the albums are gonna be. It must be really entertaining for the self to click on a headline and leave a bitchy post every time the org is updated.

Promote what other artists do? He just gives an example of how Trent Reznor does it to show how it can be done, using the internet in a successful way. I don't like the music of Nine Inch Nails or Trent Reznor, but I really wish Prince could have distributed his music that way. The interaction and moneytransfer would then go directly between Prince and the fans, and the need for bootlegging would disappear. But I'm postive that the new site will be a step in the right direction.

I agree that people should wait for the official tracklist before they whine about lenght of the cd's, but it's not bitchy to give constructive criticism.

Exactly. Lotus Flow3r sounds about right, but the second album could just be 8 long songs. Lotus could be more commercial, while the other is more experimental.

No knowing until we have the cd in our hands, though.

First of all, I'm honestly surprised that you've joined the ranks complaining about the lenght of these albums. We don't actually know the runtimes of these records yet, so that's pretty foolish. Even if they do end up being 40 minutes long, what's wrong with that?

The urge to fill CDs with 80 minutes of music simply because the space is available is one that needs to be resisted by more artists. Are you ignoring the fact that the the old Prince albums you actually enjoy (and I could be wrong, but I don't think you've enjoyed anything he's done in about 15 years; why you persist in coming here is beyond me) clock in at around the same? If it was fine then, why isn't it now?

Secondly, fuck off with this Trent Reznor nonesense. The Slip is 43 minutes long. And that bloated Ghosts thing (which I sincerly doubt you listen to all the way through) should probably have been shorter than that.

If he's your current idol, go haunt his fanboards and leave the rest of us alone. I'm sure he'll disappoint you soon enough (his cash grab tour with Jane's Addiction perhaps?) and you'll waste the next 10 years of your life complaining about him too. Get a fucking life Bart!

I remember when past tracklists were revealed, and people mocked them as "fake", "because there's no way the real album is that short".

Case in point: Crystal Ball, when I like other fans looked at the leaked tracklist and pointed out that unless Prince kept some ridiculously extended versions in his vault, each of those discs would be barely 40 minutes. I remember that fans back then also were shushing me. How did that work out, hmmm?

And yes, I simply point to Reznor as an artist who does get the Internet, who does interact with his fans (he has an account on the number one NIN message board Echoing The Sound, and has very occasionally posted there), who doesn't punih people for taking pics and videos, but encourages them and actually links to the videos and pictures from his official site.
- He even released 405 GBs of raw video footage of three concerts so fans could edit their own DVDs and spread them via torrents etcetera.
- He's just finished a short Australian tour, and a dozen live videos from that tour (featuring soundboard audio), shot by Rob Sheridan, have been posted on Vimeo -- http://vimeo.com/ninofficial -- and YouTube -- http://YouTube.com/ninofficial . Don't forget that Vimeo even allows you to download the exact video that was uploaded by the user, in this case 500+ MB MOVs.
- Fans who've ripped the audio from those videos and posted it online have NEVER been threatened with lawsuits, in fact if you post the links at the OFFICIAL NIN.COM FORUMS you will not get a single complaint from Reznor.

Now compare to the cowardice of sites like prince.org, where even hinting at how you can rip the audio from LotusFlow3r.com is VERBOTEN.
Now compare to the witchhunts after fan pics from the O2 concerts were posted online.
Now compare to HouseQuake closing down because for the umpteenth time they've gotten a call from Prince's lawyer because they've done some tiny thing Prince is deeply upset about.

Oh, and Reznor didn't throw an Oscar bash for his Hollywood pals. He doesn't announce some "major" event and then doesn't come through for weeks or months. He doesn't throw website launch parties for assorted journalists and a handful of fans -- and then doesn't launch the website. He doesn't post links to reviews from "major sources" to hype himself. He doesn't "leak" information to a pathetic gossip blog.

What he did do is help Jane's Addiction get their shit together so he could tour with them before he puts NIN on hold for a while. (Prince meanwhile is producing an album for some bland girl he's f*cking this week.)

Reznor's also on Twitter. He also posts pics from his iPhone to NIN.com . He writes the stuff that's on NIN.com's homepage. He isn't afraid to speak his mind. His new business model is explained to record industry folks.

But this time, Prince will do the right thing. I mean, it's not like this whole Lotusflow3r thing is a giant clusterfuck already, right? It's not like he's managed to not live up to already severely low standards.

Do I need to drag up the dozens of interviews in which Prince complained about not being able to release music fast enough? About him being limited by his record company? And yet here we are, again awaiting the release of a multiple album set which seems to be more about there being three CDs than anything else.

TwiliteKid said:

Ah, I see. 1 x 80 min CD = evil, 2 x 40 min CDs = good. What was your point again?

Those were limited by TECHNOLOGY. Vinyl can only take about 45 minutes, and even that's debatable. Quite frankly I wouldn't mind a deluxe remastered Purple rain with one disc containing the "full-length" versions of tracks before they were edited down so they'd fit on the vinyl.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers actually included longer versions of some tracks when they remastered their back catalogue some years ago, because that's how they intended them to be originally. I don't entirely agree with that (IMHO they should have included remastered versions of the edited tracks so fans could at least have "reconstructed" the original albums.)

TwiliteKid said:

So? It's also FREE. It was a thank you from Trent for making Ghosts a success (I repeat: number 1 on Amazon's 2008 MP3 chart). It was the second NIN album I got in 2008, which considering Trent used to take YEARS inbetween albums... I wasn't even expecting a thank you, and after getting Discipline I didn't expect a free 10 track album, I'd have been happy with an EP. And I'd have paid for it, too (I did in the end, I bought the physical CD and got a free DVD with half a dozen cool rehearsal videos). And then he did a tour and actually played songs from it.

And that bloated Ghosts thing (which I sincerly doubt you listen to all the way through) should probably have been shorter than that.

I've actually listened to it all the way thorough a dozen times at least, and there's a bunch of tracks I occasionally cue up. Oh, and did you know that among the multi-tracks there were actually two more Ghosts songs. Go figure: not only did Trent give us multi-tracks so fans could remix his music (and post it online legally, at a site he is maintaining and which he launched against the advise of his record company), he actually put two extra songs in there.

BTW You do know that recently someone posted several NIN rehearsals from some years ago ? They're available here http://www.ninlive.com/nin_rehearsal/ (yes, there's a site where you can download NIN concerts for free -- and no, he hasn't had any threatening letters from Trent's lawyers). Read "mofoboy25.txt" for the whole story, and notice how the NIN camp knew what was happening and didn't do anything to stop the guy.

I'm sure he'll disappoint you soon enough (his cash grab tour with Jane's Addiction perhaps?)

Cash grab? How? You do know fans get access to tickets first, right? You do know that his last US tour lost him money because Trent insisted on doing something technically ridiculously complicated? Are NIN tickets ridiculously expensive?

But I can imagine why you hate it that I post these things here. Because these examples all show that all the excuses fans like you make for Prince are based on... well, nothing. If Prince had done 1/10th of what Trent has (and also hadn't been a complete and utter douchebag to fansites), you wouldn't hear me "complain" at all.

BTW I'm not really complaining or whining now either. I'm simply pointing out that Prince could do things differently, which would
a) be far more cost effective (I'd love to see the bills Web Sherriff sends Prince),
b) please a lot more fans, and
c) would actually go some way to make him earn the title of "Internet pioneer" (which he isn't, never was, and never will be).
In my scenario, we all win. In your scenario, we're stuck in the same loop and the only way to get any joy is to behave like sheep and pretend we're living in some kind of fairytale world where Prince is king of the Internet.

You already blew your entire credibility with the 43 minutes long Reznor album. CCya silly troll.

Please show me the dozens of interviews where Reznor complains about his record company limiting his output. Please note that The Slip was the SECOND album Reznor released in 2008, after the 2-CD Ghosts.

But of course you cannot debate the actual issues, so you think up a straw man argument. Translation: I win, you lose.

Debating a troll is completely useless. I only laugh about people like you.

I hope they're short. Show me an album over 45 minutes, and I'll show you some filler. I'll make a rare exception for the occasional double album that is intentionally designed as such, but even then, there's usually quite a bit that could go.
