Leonard Cohen vs. Prince

Who would you rather see in concert? Me, Leonard every time, without a shadow of doubt. If you want a dose of sex and religion, tears and laughter (and acrobatics by cute female backing singers!) go see Leonard while you've still got the chance. It'll be the best concert you will ever see. Trust me. Cohen's 2009 American concerts will sell out instantly. Presales are starting now.

This one's not bad:

I can´t make the hills
The system is shot
I´m living on pills
for which I thank G-d

There´s sun in the leaves
and birds in the tree.
Nobody believes
it´s written by Thee.

I used to be song
I used to be cock
but time is long gone
past my laughingstock

I bid you good-bye
There´s nothing to add
I´ve tried and I try
to stop going mad

I followed the course
from chaos to art
My dick was the horse
my life was the cart

I´m back at my desk
(the end of the line)
a bee in my breast
a snake in my spine

The silverware shines
that my mother left
to me when she died
fulfilled and bereft

My leash is too long
I think that I´m free
I´d leap at the young
but I´m sixty-three

I know what I want
It took many lives
I´m cured by the cunt
I´m killed by the eyes

The sorrows are real
as froth on the wave
as shit on the beach
the city´s disgrace

Who cares what I say
I´m not who I was
I´m paid what I pay
I´m always in love

The summer won´t come
´till I go to bed
The birds will return
when the dog is dead

You can´t say it right
when you touch yourself
But truth´s not advice
It is total health

The crap on my back
the piss in my face
but happy at last
in the Holy Place

You can´t go too deep
if you want to swim
where the mermaids weep
out of love for Him

I`m nothing but lust
I´m nothing but pain
I did these mistrust
but Never Again

I say what I want
for I am the Child
of G-d coming home
and His Wife gone wild

I don´t need a thing
I use what I have
a moth-eaten wing
a worm cut in half

With these I invoke
The Name to draw nigh
I´m clamped in a stock
to hold my head high

My animal howls
My angel´s upset
And deep in my bowels
the shit of regret

You can´t stop a man
from loving too much
I´m still licking stamps
from trying it once

My pen is too wet
My ink is too black
The Winner won´t get
his foot on the track

But the one like me
with light in her eye
is utterly free
to crawl or to fly

And she´ll know the path
I carved through the pain
my will cut in half
and Freedom between

I´ll meet her one day
when the time is right
for me to display
my flare in the night

for the space in space
to cough up the Word
that seals our Embrace
unharmed and unheard

And Mercy at last
for one doubled up
and tied to the mast
with the flags of love

And thank´s be to you
for helping me out
when Youth had no clue
what´s it all about

Your kindness is kind
your trueness is true
I pray that you´ll find
your Beloved, too

as I have found mine
where I´d never look:
in the threaded spine
of my Longing Book.

Are you on the right fan club? I'm a member of a lot of fan clubs and I have never heard this type of question posed before! What type of question is this?

I might go and see Leonard Cohen but to suggest I would go and see him over Prince is ridiculous...bit like your question.

God is alive, magic is afoot
God is alive, magic is afoot
God is alive, magic is afoot
God is afoot, magic is alive
Alive is afoot, magic never died
God never sickened
Many poor men lied
Many sick men lied
Magic never weakened
Magic never hid
Magic always ruled
God is afoot, God never died
God was ruler
Though his funeral lengthened
Though his mourners thickened
Magic never fled
Though his shrouds were hoisted
The naked God did live
Though his words were twisted
The naked magic thrived
Though his death was published
Round and round the world
The heart did not believe

Many hurt men wondered
Many struck men bled
Magic never faltered
Magic always lead
Many stones were rolled
But God would not lie down
Many wild men lied
Many fat men listened
Though they offered stones
Magic still was fed
Though they locked their coffers
God was always served
Magic is afoot, God is alive
Alive is afoot

Alive is in command
Many weak men hungered
Many strong men thrived
Though they boast of solitude
God was at their side
Nor the dreamer in his cell
Nor the captain on the hill
Magic is alive
Though his death was pardoned
Round and round the world
The heart would not believe

Though laws were carved in marble
They could not shelter men
Though altars built in parliaments
They could not order men
Police arrested magic and magic went with them
Mmmmm.... for magic loves the hungry
But magic would not tarry
It moves from arm to arm
It would not stay with them
Magic is afoot
It cannot come to harm
It rests in an empty palm
It spawns in an empty mind
But magic is no instrument
Magic is the end
Many men drove magic
But magic stayed behind
Many strong men lied
They only passed through magic
And out the other side
Many weak men lied
They came to God in secret
And though they left Him nourished
They would not tell who healed
Though mountains danced before them
They said that God was dead
Though his shrouds were hoisted
The naked God did live
This I mean to whisper to my mind
This I mean to laugh within my mind
This I mean my mind to serve
Til' service is but magic
Moving through the world
And mind itself is magic
Coursing through the flesh
And flesh itself is magic
Dancing on a clock
And time itself
The magic length of God

The point is this: The subject matter is the same - i.e. Sex and God. If you like Prince, then Cohen will blow your mind. This is almost certainly your LAST CHANCE to see Cohen. EVER! The show is unlike anything you will ever see again - JUST GO!

OK OK...relax!....I do like some of Leonard Cohen's songs but it;s his singing that put's me off...Hallelujah and Waiting for a Miracle for example...I much prefer other people singing his songs to be honest...KD Lang's version of Hallelujah is amazing..now would I go and see KD Lang over Prince?

Perhap that should be my next post!!!

Just teasing you man!

I like Leonard Cohen and all but comparing these two's concerts isn't really much of a contest. Now Leonard maybe 30 years go before his voice lowered 3 octaves, then maybe that'd be a comparison.
Change it one more time..

Prince without a doubt. I'm not familiar with Leonard Cohen's work, though I've been hearing his name in recent months.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

I would rather see Prince in concert. No question about that.

Although, when it comes to song writing, Leonard wins that round.

This is a crazy analogy, you might as well had titled it Kenny G vs. P. What little I know of Leonard Cohen aside from his song Hallelujah, he is not even in the same style as Prince. He's certainly not a dance style or party style singer, so its not possible to compare him to Prince. Plus, Cohen is seventy four years old, He doesn't have to shake and shimmy to entertain you as P is expected to when in concert.

People who don't appreciate Mr. Cohen's work are obviously deaf. The man's voice tends to drone, true. But lyrically he'll knock you on your ass.

Granted, it's a completely apples-and-oranges question. A bit like asking if you'd rather go to the moon or read your favourite book, but what's so ridiculous about it?

Personally, I was pleasantly surprised to see Leonard Cohen's name dropped here. Makes a refreshing change from the Jackson-related threads that can even clutter up this forum.

I saw the Auckland show on Jan 22. I just can't praise it highly enough, as I told bassist Roscoe Beck after the show, it was the best concert I've ever seen. No one has moved me to tears like he did that night. Actually I have to go again - Red Rocks Denver 2nd June, I think. His last show ever? Possibly not, but god what a show it'll be!
