most of my family think the following about the wee genius...

a) He is a harry hoofter (that is a man of homosexual tendencies)
b) He is a devil worshiper.
c) He is the devil.
d) He is overated and has not done anything good since Purple Rain.

My Mom absolutely adores Prince. She says he reminds her of me, lol (uh, thanks Ma?). When she sees him on TV she goes; "Aw, I just wanna give him a hug", lol. Of interesting note, when my Mom was a teenager, Benny Goodman ruled the radio! eek

But my Dad is another story (always has been, sheesh!). My Dad was WAY into music in his younger days, and has a trunk full of old jazz LP's out in the garage that seasoned Orger's would kill for. Thanks to him, my earliest days as an infant were spent curled up by a huge speaker, in diapers, with a bottle, and my faithful friend "Topo Gigio" (an authentic rubberized replica of the Italian mouse that appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show, which served as my "Teddy Bear"), listening to the likes of Jimmy Smith, Ray Charles, Nat King Cole, Sam Cooke, and others. In fact, as an toddler, my Mom could sit me down by this little "record player" (that used to come in this box that looked like a little suit case - some of you may remember those), with a stack of 45's (that you had to put that little yellow spindle in the middle of so they would fit and not wobble off the turntable), and I would entertain myself all day long, even changing the records on my own, carefully placing the needle on the record of the next song in my 2-year-old playlist, lol. She would check on me every once in a while, but it was great for her because she could get her house work done and not have to worry about what I was doing.

Anyway, I digress. I was about to get to my Dad. mad

I bought him the cassette for "Dirty Mind" when it came out for his birthday, so he could listen to it in the car. I was sooooo totally a Prince fan, I was trying to put my Dad onto what the new sounds of the day were all about, trying to keep him up on it. Anyway, one day went by, then two, then a whole week, and I finally asked my Dad; "Well, did you listen to Prince? What did you think?" First he asked me "Well, is Prince a girl?", lol. I shit you not. Then he goes "Well, I heard all the cursing, if that's what you're asking me". I thought to myself, "NEVERMIND - you're a lost cause", lol.

So yeah, in summary; My Mom LOVES Prince, and my Dad's a jerk. sad

Heck no! My Dad, not once, but twice, took my album off my stereo and wacked me over the head till it broke! So I bought a tape....next thing I know my boom box was broken! It just made me love Prince all the more! Thank God for the eventual CD's; they were not that breakable! (lol)

yes!!! 9Th Bday 1985 they bought me 3 cassettes...

1. Bruce Sprinsteen - Born In The USA
2. USA for Africa - We Are The World....had EVERY singer I was interested in and was a frequent 45" buyer
BUT was NEVER into Prince... my Parents were VERY oblivious and confused between MJ and Prince...I played the HELL outta Thriller and whenever P was on MTV, they were like..HEY that guy is on MTV and 70% of the time it was a P video with them THINKING it was MJ, but it was PRINCE!! smile.. I Hated Prince...
and the 3rd cassette was...
3. Prince & The Revolution - Purple Rain,,,
DAMN was that an eye opener... I "knew"...of Let's Go Crazy, When Doves Cry and I had just "struggled" that fall of MTV playing the LIVE "IWD4U/BIAS" videos and thinking..THIS isn't MJ/Duran Duran or even Frankie Goes to Hollywood..ect ect..... I HATED IT.....

so having those cassettes, i went thru them and I hated to ADMIT but Purple Rain was the ONE album I could listen to from begining to end..NO PROBLEM...

then later in April or so.... they got the Video Disc...12" or so...remmeber those?!?!?!?!!? of Purple Rain and I watched the SHIT outta that...becoming a HUGE P fan....I was like... man .. a kick ass album.. a movie MADE from that album... OK..sweet
Later that spring, I was in a record shop and seen ATWIAD... BEFORE any single was released and thought..HEY the price is right.... is P & the Revolution...in LOVE w/ Prince, Wendy Lisa....ect from the movie, figured it was P. Rain Pt. 2....bOY was I in for a shock, but a pleasant one..from THERE on out it was OLD Prince albums and everything ON release date...and I have my parents to thank!!

BACK then they didnt' Prince...so it's confusing they got the album...but in hindsight I Think they were confused w/MJ...Thank God!~!! bUT Love for the music was well felt...for a BIT..... but they STILL rember P from P.Rain Album and movie... totally cool, it it WEREN'T for my parents and them BUYING me the cassette.. I DOUBT I would have gotten into Prince so early IF at all,,,,, so THANKS mom and dad!!!!!

I think constantly playing him over and over sort of forced my mom to like him. One time she came home from work and had been humming a song all day long. She was so embarrassed when she realized it was "Jack U Off." She also took me to the Lovesexy concert when I was 12 AND waited in line for tix. Good mom.

My parents had no idea what i liked or what i was into, rock music of most kinds was not allowed to be played as they were evangelists and rock was the music of the devil, needless to say i went through the uk punk phase of the early 80s, new romantics phase with a lot of adam ant - ant music for sex people! (NOTE NO roxy music or spandeau shite!) and then saw purple rain - and became purple by degrees as the years followed, saw under the cherry moon and was completely hooked - i dont think im an old orger but got into princes music around '84.

my parenst didnt seem very aware of the uk music scene and just played their naff evangelical stuff - what i still think is rock by stealth!

They never really expressed any objection to the music but my mom would always say he just looked dirty like he needed a bath. I am sure they had no idea of the sexual lyrics that I was blaring in my headphones at age 14 in 1984. I was already a little corrupted so it wasn't Prince's fault.

Great thread! My father is into Opera and Classical music, but recognizes and appreciates Prince's musical genius. He took me and friends to the LoveSexy concert in high school! My mom always liked Prince's kiss, raspberry beret, etc. When Sign 'O The Times came out I didn't have money to buy it so she bought it for me and I was hooked, so I can credit my mom for getting me into his music! My parents were/are into the arts so they never were ones to think he was weird or crazy, just unique/eccentric...

My mom hated Prince she used to call him a "licked rat" All of my great 80s Prince posters mysteriously "disappeared" after I went to college, I'm still pissed about that by the way mad. I don't think my dad cared one way or the other...he got me tickets to the '86 B-day concert.

No.

My mom liked "The Glamorous Life" by Sheila E, "Sugar Walls" by Sheena Easton, and "Manic Monday" by The Bangles, but didn't buy any of Prince's albums.

We had a tape dubbed of David Bowie - Let's Dance on one side and Prince - Purple Rain on the other side and I don't remember that getting much turn. It might have even been recorded over??

After I really started collecting Prince in the 90s and I was trying to get her to listen too (in the vehicle), she had to admit to me she didn't really care for him.

Did she give you a reason? Because it seems that she liked his productions (ie: Sheila E, Sheena Easton, The Bangles). Or didn't she know those projects were produced by him?

I was born and raise in Tj (Mexico) in a very religious family so course my mom hated Purple Rain the movie, she make us FF the Apolonia sex scene, but she din't hate the music, both my mom and my dad were really suportive of Prince, they even ask me to play them my VHS recordings of Friday Night Videos every saturday morning.

When I need it money to drive to LA for his 1993 concert my mom bought my car from me and I went to my first Prince concert in my friends car.

My dad was a mexican macho that lived trough the mexican revolution era, so it was really rare for him to get into funk music but he loved Prince.

That's too bad really. So then I guess she either has a problem with Black artists, or artists she perceives to be gay. sad
