My question was sarcastic, meanin that I don't see the similarity or comparison since there are other cities that send up lights like that lurking

i would think this is a good part of comparison because you can see NYC or what looks to be NYC in the mix.

That second pic only is NYC when the blue lights were put up, one year after the WTC tragedy, in honor of buildings 1 and 2 of World Trade Center and in memory of the victims. Sorry, but I just don't think that NYC pic has anything to do with the inspiration for Prince's website.
[Edited 1/6/09 6:55am]

I agree. You don't need a photo like that to come up with the idea for that picture, I've seen plenty of similar drawings. I think it's supposed to look like Prince/The Lotus Flower is either touched by a light from God or radiating its "power" up to the sky or Heaven, or something like that.

I don't think anyone's mentioned it, but could that possibly be the new album cover?

Looks like something from the 70s (in a good way) . . . like ELO or even Journey.

The picture i posted is the NYC WTC lights at night, i just said i think the webdesigner create that picture inspired by the NYC picture..may be after he changed some of things on the picture to give the appearance of Minneapolis in your eye ! smile

Don't take that picture in his 1st degree...it's an Symbolic picture, a kind of Religious state of mind ...The webdesigner is free to change some of the things in the image as the fires of the WTC which become the Purple Droplet Splashing on New York resulting from the Galaxy of Mpls lol

Can be the purple droplet Splash on the civilization mean that it is time to clean this world by the Spirituality... from the civilisation of pharaoh to now with The Attack of NYC WTC...so i think this picture of NYC WTC inspired the Prince website...The Purple rain Apocalypse is 4 soon ! We need to have the Redemption By his Magnificent Music B4 The End of The World smile

His inspiration, light beam and all, appears be to a fascination and indulgence in Egyptian Mythology/Religion and a specific "solar", sun god:

Nefertem was the "solar" god of the Lotus Flower and of Perfume/Fragrance.
He was also the patron of both the healing arts and the arts of beautification...

His name, Nfr-tm, means..."he who has newly appeared is perfect'."

"Nefertem was shown to be a beautiful young man with a water lily-lotus flower on his head, and was also depicted as a human head emerging from a large water lily."

Below is a statue of Nefertem's likeness (his head ascending from a Lotus Flower)and similiar facial pose from Prince below on his artwork...

Also, the "beam" ascending from these "Nefertem"-Lotus Flower statues are similiar to the one in the artwork.

(Also...)

"The god of the blue water lily was Nefertem, a god not just linked to the sun but to beautification and healing....The perfume of this flower was not only pleasing to the Egyptians, but they saw it as healing as well. Scenes show women holding the water lily and people being offered the flower at parties, smelling its divine fragrance. Some people today believe that the Egyptians used this plant as a narcotic both for its healing qualities and as a recreational drug..."

"... the Creator ... knew that he was alone. This solitude became unbearable and he longed for other beings to share the new world with him. The thoughts of the Creator became the gods and everything else which exists. When his thoughts had shaped them, his tongue gave them life by naming them. Thoughts and words were the power behind creation."

So, in a nutshell, looks like he now chooses to constitute himself
"symbolically" as the wanting to offer something "new", modern day "Minneapolis" bred, aromatic, artistic embodiment of the ancient "Upper Egypt" bred Nefertem, god of the Lotus Flower...

Hmmmm...okay...well...have a nice day everyone.

9 stars on the right & 11 Stars on the left side of the picture ===> it's 9/11 Reference...all things are symbolic in this picture...the Chance ? all details have signification here....
that confirm 4 me that the picture refers to 9/11 reference...the droplet falling from his Galaxy to clean this world in trouble...

I'm not sure it is the new cover because their is supposed to be three albums right?
To me it looks like generic unimaginative mystical mumbo jumbo i have seen a million times, like those cheesy sci-fi B movie posters from the 80's, but worse.

Judging from this summary, does this means that Prince believes in other gods now? other than God who he proclaims to be the One and Only?

If it was the cover art, it would be lightyears ahead of what's out there now. The new "standard" seems to be a plain photo of the artist (usually a closup face shot) with artist/album type. That's it - virtually no artistry out there.
