http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/music_blog/2008/12/visiting-with-p.html

Tuesday morning, I received the Golden Ticket of journalistic invitations: a summons to Prince's mansion, high atop Mulholland Drive, to hear the new music he'll be releasing sometime after the holidays. At 8 p.m. that evening, I drove my dirty Mazda past the fountain in his courtyard, parked by the limo in the back, and entered his manse. The man himself greeted me in a candelit study, where he was laboring over a laptop with his Web designers, Anthony Malzone and Scott Addison Clay.

The next five hours took me from that room to a car Prince referred to as "Miles Davis," where we listened to one set of songs; into a back room furnished with a round bed, faux-fur carpeting and a plexiglass Rhodes piano, where he played cuts by his new protege, the comely Bria Valente; and into that white limo, where the entirety of "Lotus Flower," the album previewed earlier this month on Indie 103.1, boomed through the speakers as we drove through Hollywood.

Needless to say, it was an amazing experience. After the jump, a few tidbits, including Prince's promise of three albums in 2009 and his thoughts on Proposition 8.

Prince will release not one, but three albums in the new year. He's in final negotiations with "a major retailer" to distribute the music in physical form, and a highly interactive website will also provide an opportunity to buy. He's not working with a record label. "The gatekeepers have to change," he said several times throughout the evening.

He's found his way back to the sound of "When Doves Cry." The first disc, tentatively titled "MPLSOUND," is an electro-flavored solo effort recorded at Paisley Park Studios. Prince experimented with Pro Tools and "new ways of recording" on these trippy, experimental pop songs. One features a Q-Tip rap; another calls a "Funky Congregation" to worship and may become a live set piece.

He's ready to revive the Quiet Storm. "We got sick of waiting for Sade to make a new album," he said, introducing Valente's new album, "Elixir." The tracks are chill, with Valente's buttery voice melding with beats by Morris Hayes and Prince's guitar lines. Some are explicitly sexual. "This music is nasty, but it's not dirty," Prince said, explaining how sensual music fits in with his much-discussed faith -- he's a Jehovah's Witness. "There's no profanity. It isn't promoting promiscuity. She's singing about her lover, who could be her partner for life."

He loves his guitar. As the tracks played on Indie 103.1 indicated, "Lotus Flower" is rooted in the instrument. Prince said he refocused on his playing while performing live dates with the singer Tamar Davis in 2006; with the spotlight trained on someone else, he could fall back in love with solos and riffs. "Lotus Flower" is a varied album, featuring cuts recorded over the course of two years, but standout tracks include some heavy rockers -- especially the apocalyptic "Dreamer," which Prince said was partly inspired by the radical black comedian Dick Gregory.

He did not vote for Proposition 8. In fact, he didn't vote at all. "I didn't vote for Obama either," he explained. "Jehovah's Witnesses haven't voted for their whole inception." The controversy over a recent New Yorker "Talk of the Town" item, which Prince feels implied he supported the gay-marriage ban, has upset him. It's the first thing he wanted to discuss when the Web geeks had gone and we were alone. "I have friends that are gay and we study the Bible together," he said. He added that two sides fighting "only benefit the third person" who instigated the fight.

Isnt this old, i read that before, the only news that is there is the journalistic pig that is so lucky. I AM JELOUAS
Prince I will always miss and love U.

Not much of a clarification though. Not voting at all is just as bad as voting for Prop 8. We're talking about equal rights for all and thats nothing to be vague about, in my opinion.

Anyway, I only bring it up again because Prince and the journalist did. I'm happy that others here are jazzed for some new music.

The MPLSound thing...I dunno. Someone on this forum posted a link to something on another website, that had an album called MPLSound by a group called ENS. It was primarily musical, was from 2006, and while it definitely had a Prince vibe and feel to it, I wasn't sold on it's legitimacy. Now we see that MPLSound is in fact Prince, but that being said, I wasn't a fan of the other stuff I heard. So if that thing from 2006 is in fact the album we get, then I'll be pretty 'meh' about the whole deal.

Nah! Heard it on Soundclick. I doubt it's the same thing. This "ENS" is more likely a Linn-happy Prince fan production. I bet Prince doesn't even know about it. It just so happens he's using the same name. It definitely has a Prince vibe to it but only because ENS jacked all of Prince's Minneapolis "sounds" (even the "dog" sample from La La La He He He!") Plus the titles of the songs are more in tribute to Prince than anything else!

I believe it when I see it.
3 albums, sure...

Don't get me wrong: it would be nice, interesting and such.

But after mr P leaving WB he dropped the 1 album a year pace.
We'll see.

People who constantly complain about the hits are far more boring than the hits they complain about.
Do Bruce Springsteen fans complain about him performing his hits at concerts? OMG, he's singing Born In The USA again. Time to bitch and moan. What about Rolling Stone fans? Do they whine like babies about hearing Satisfaction one more time?
I love to hear Prince perform new music, too. But I also know that Purple Rain and Let's Go Crazy are here to stay. The great thing about Prince is that he constantly surprises us. Whether it's covers of Foo Fighters or Radiohead, or performing obscure gems from his own massive catalog, or throwing in something new that no one has ever heard yet, Prince is all over the musical map.
But Purple Rain and his other hits aren't going anywhere. Deal with it or move on.

All of the people complaining about the hits weren't around from the mid-90's to around 2001 shows. Lots of great intimate gigs and current songs.
From Musicology to the present Prince has been living up to his "legacy artist" Status. You know like The Stones, Stevie Wonder, Bowie. He's now immortalized in the R-N-R Hall Of Fame. Played the Super Bowl. It's a return to a large visibility. So he worked the hits to remind people the great classics they are. If he is indeed putting out multiple albums this year, I imagine that much of it will be rocked at the tour that follows.

I love when Prince drops it out of the Blue. Just like it is SUPPOSED 2 be.

Yeah, really out of the blue, Mike. Let's see: pre-album hype by "leaking" tracks to radio, summoning reporters for "exclusive" interviews,... This is STANDARD RECORD COMPANY PR.

Wanna see actual out of the blue? Trent Reznor who posts the word "soon" on his site and then drops a new album unannounced two weeks later, for immediate consumption. He did this TWICE last year. Completely disregarded regular channels, simply put it out. No sucking up to reporters, no hype, just the actual music. THAT is out of the blue. Prince is still doing the same thing he's done always. Go back 10 years and it was EXACTLY the same for Rave.

Bwahahahaha! Sweet Jebus, he really doesn't have a clue. He thinks he can take on the classic Sade albums? He can't even produce anything that's as good as the protégé albums from the 1980s.

Oh, and FYI: Sade did have a comeback a couple of years ago. The fact that he doesn't remember this, speaks volumes about how successful this "project" is going to be.

Three new albums this year? Yeah sure. How's that Tamar album working out, hm? Remember when that was gonna be da bomb?

Exciting times. It'll be nice to hear Prince putting out music more frequently again, the gaps between albums seem to be getting longer and longer as he gets older.

Also, quite interested to hear what Prince has been doing with ProTools. And it'll be great to hear Q-Tip again, it's been a while.

I really don't know why Prince needs to have a protogé though. It never ends well!

My first thought was that he was actually indeed talking about the album "Lover`s Rock". I remember reading somewhere that he loved that record.
Maybe, after all, Prince is a tiny little less stupid than you think he is. He might be. You might want to take this point to consideration. Maybe.
