It's not just clever. It's brilliant.
From time to time, Prince throws in a song to the mix of his already impressive repertoires and shows us just why there will never be in our lifetime, another Prince. He's a once in a lifetime phenomenon.

From beginning to end, this is a song of excess and understated elegance at the same time. A call to commitment hinting on the profane such as only Prince could pull off.

A brilliant song.

ok now .. THIS is the ultimate thread lol ... and I think I have written this song about 15 times in the last month lol .. a man in love opening his heart to a woman he wants an emotional bond with this woman THAT'S 'being in love' not just loving somebody, you are 'in love' ... My favorite all time Prince song..

Genious song. I just heard it on the radio and sounds as fresh/cutting edge/vital as it did when it was released (87!) The bassline is one of his best.

Fun Fact: Honored writer/professor bell hooks used to examine this song in her women/gender studies classes.

(a breath of fresh air, really) gave me "total recall" as to why I love Prince's

I too, love this song! The part of it that really makes me shake my head is near the end, where the background vocals just keep saying..."if I was your girlfriend, if I was your girlfriend...It just sounds so mental! I have also played it on 45rpm, just for kicks, and the music is just slammin'!
