What's your most SHOCKING Prince moment?

1. The 1992 MTV Awards eek

There I was, watching Prince... my hero... perform Gett Off... with my mom watching alongside me. And what does Prince do? He turns around in that yellow outfit and reveals his ass-less pants. I think my mom and I both spit out our Ovaltine.

2. The Slap. eek

Watching Purple Rain in the movie theater back in 1984. I was loving it, and thinking about how much a great guy Prince was, and how this movie was proving my point. Then he bitch-slaps Apollonia! LOL I was like... Oh no he didn't!!! Shit! I was sitting next to my mom at that point because Prince had felt up Apollonia during the God Instrumental portion (Shocking Moment 2.5), and she made me come sit next to her. Just when I thought Prince was redeeming himself with kindness and soft backround music, that SLAP came! Luckily, mom still let us stay! smile

3. Prince getting shot in Under the Cherry Moon. eek

I was right there with Tricky saying... "Dammmmnnnnn Chris.... Dammmnnnnn" LOL (Sorry to give the movie away for those of you who haven't seen it, but you've had 20+ years.) In any case, I didn't expect that! My hero! Shot! Blood coming out his mouth... and that line which I thought was so classic and so noble... "We had fun, didn't we?" LOL (Hey, I was 16, and far from a movie afficionado!) lol

What are yours??? smile
The public is squeezin' you kiddo. You'd better kick ass on your next album or else!

1. The Gett Off MTV performance. I wasn't expecting such a huge stage, that silly outfit, the tepid performance, and then....BAM!!! assless pants. it was all too much.

2. The Muppet Special. Jesus wept.

3. The way he handled 1999. It was supposed to be Prince's year. And .... nothing. n-o-t-h-i-n-g. Then he releases the new master late with some weird ass excuse, and well.... it was the New Master lol

4. the Symbol name change and sabotaging of a career that had tremendous momentum.

Let's see! Come to think of it, I've expierienced the three major Prince events in my life alone...

1991 MTV Awards: I was five--FIVE-- at the time and just in my room channel surfing. I had no idea in hell prior to this who Prince was or what he was was about or anything. I just remember landing on MTV and it seemed exciting. A vibrant little man in a candy yellow outfit jumping around sining. And then he whipped around and showed me his little backside. eek I remembered being confused and wondering "Why is his booty showing?" As a direct aftermath from that, one of the first things I notice about a prospective boyfriend is his backside...so thanks Prince for kinda wrecking my innocence. LOL. woot!

Slap Heard Around the World: When I was twelve, my best friend at the time was a girl named Amy and she was up over the Moon for Prince. Yakking about him all the time and she mentioned Purple Rain frequently. So on a whim, one Friday, I went to the local video store. Now i'ma little 12 year old in a Sail Moon shirt renting an "R" rated movie. The clerk didn't give a hoot in hell. Just took my 3 dollars and I was GONE. So I get home and pop the tape in. I was on my ears the whole time from the cursing to the boob baring to the slap, I was just on my ears man. It was just kinda shocking when he hit Apollonia and it scared me at 12. But not 10 years later, I get it and understand it. But it scared me. I thought he was off beinng the mess out of everyone! LOL!

P. Control : Heard about this gem from a random person. I was with a friend talking about Michael Jackson and the kids next to me were talking about Prince and something called Pussy Control. We jumped into the conversation and eventually got to see the video-in the A/V Hall at school. Someone had taped it when it aired and was passing it around. I was just kinda shocked because I had enver heard anything like it, but I liked it! LOL!

Prince really loves that shock value.
I love a Man who:
Wears More Make Up Than Me.
Wears Four Inch Stilleto Boots.
Changes His Name To An Unpronouncable Symbol.
Who Changes His Name Back From An Unpronouncable Symbol.
Oh And Most Importantly, Who Is Sexy Little Drop Of Butterscotch

Prince has not really shocked me, He makes me smile. The closest thing I can come to that was sexually surprising was Prince singing, "Tick Tick Bang." I just love that really. cool

I've had a couple lol

When I first heard The Gold Experience
The song Endorphinmachine literally scared me lol something about the whole vibe of it or the overdoing it on the screaming... part of the reason the album was a grower.

The "Dolphin" Letterman performance
Just found it so depressing... certainly wasn't prepared for him to be in that "condition" disbelief

The video for When Doves Cry & Gett Off
The first 30 seconds of that first video eek did NOT need to see that
The overall presentation of the 2nd... just had me disbelief I really wasn't into raunchyness back then.

As for shocking in a GOOD way...

Seeing him perform "I would die 4 U/Baby I'm a Star" at the end of the film when my dad insisted I watch the rest of the movie when it was already in progress...

And when he appeared on American Idol to perform eek bloody hell, I totally forgot that I heard something about negiotations for him to perform. What a wonderful surprise that was biggrin
had 2 run away... pride was 2 strong. It started raining, baby, the birds were gone

Oh... one more that I forgot.

4. Prince naked in a flower.

I think I had just heard Alphabet Street on the radio in 1988, and was jammin' in my car at the age of 17, while on my way to Sam Goody to buy the LP. (Yeah, we still hadn't gotten hip with CD's in my house in 1988. So for those of you under the age of 25, it's a big round black disc that had grooves that you used to put on a sound creating device called a "turn table". But I digress...

I walk into the mall with 2 of my best friends, and they're singin' NWA songs like... "F' the Police", and "Funky Enough" by the D.O.C.,other hard core rap cuts... and all wearing Easy-E-inspired black, and LA Kings black caps. So my scrawny ass walks up to the counter asking for the new Prince album with Alphabet Street... because I couldn't find it for some reason on the shelves.

When the guy reached behind the counter, he said... "Oh, we had to put it back here", and pulled out that large cover with Prince naked in a flower showing everything except his "purple digit", my friends fell out like "DAYUUUUMMMMMNNNNN... yo' boy a FREAK! I ain't ridin' in the same car with that album!! DAYUMMMM... Prince all naked in a petunia!!!"

I had to hang my head... STUNNED... thinkin'... how the hell can I buy this album and still look my boys in the face!!!

I remember laughing and saying "Wow, that's crazy... nevermind!" ...

But then I came back later that day by myself, and got home with it... hiding it... but jamming to it for a week straight!

Very Good album... but not one to buy while out with your hardcore boys in a mall!!! LOL

(VERY funny video)

My first moment was Raspberry Beret, the video, which converted me from "yeah, he's good" to real appreciation. A little later, it was Head live from the Detroit B-day gig, I used to have an old VHS tape which I would watch as a young teenager and drool. Live performances still blow my mind, last year it was "It's a wonderful world" and a few more ones in the O2.
