Seriously, Elvis Costello is being very cool with the added demos and stuff... that is what this thread was about.

I honestly do not think that Prince would release his demos and things like that... I wish he would, but he won't.

Prince is a better musican than Elvis Costello. I've seen tapes of shows of both of them. And live performances is when you see whos is the master. It doesnt matter who reads music, music is not a piece of paper. hendrix did not read music and he was a genious. Much better than you, that probably reads music. You don't have credibility to talk, you even said that KISS is the best rock band of all times. What the hell are you smoking?

I can promise you that Elvis Costello is a better technical musician than Prince, as far as reading and writing music goes. Elvis Costello can actually write chamber music and orchestral music as well, while Prince writes things like "Kamasutra" that are not very good at all.

EXAMPLE: "The Juliet Letters" by Elvis Costello with the Brodsky Quartet.

Elvis also writes music for movies/television: "GBH"

Elvis has written for and recorded with opera stars: "For the Stars" by Elvis Costello and Sofie Von Otter.

Elvis has recorded a country and western album: "Almost Blue" - not including the jazz song "Almost Blue."

Elvis has written a song that will become a jazz standard: "Almost Blue" - written for Chet Baker.

Elvis has recorded far more true jazz than Prince.

I am certain that Shausler could provide even more examples as well.

Part of the problem here is no one ever really reads and responds to what you write. I am very aware of Elvis and still think he represents nerd rock. Pop music for me does not have to be literature and I do not think most people are looking for literature in there pop music. If you had read my comments comparing the backgrounds of Elvis and Prince you would have understood the point I was making about nerd rock.

For the record there are black nerds we just do not make nerd music.
No, you are not getting it right about my so-called racist attitude(LOL) It someone said that Laura is a black bookworm. I would agree because I am black and I am a bookworm. No offense would taken. I am sorry you are reading something racist into my Elvis comments but that nerd rock thing is a white thing.

Right... you wouldn't need viagra unless you were able to get laid. Since getting laid is out of the question for you, Viagra is not high on your x-mas wish list, but I am sure that mommy and daddy will buy it for you if you get a girlfriend before the junior-high prom.

(...)And if I hadn't listened to TRC, I would say the same for Prince (since 1995). Please listen to "When I Was Cruel", and decide again.

I don't care I have enough musical diversity from Dionne to Joint 2 Joint (wake me when Mr IQ will release something like this one)

I'm trying to wake you Elvis bashers since my first post on this thread, but you all must have taken an overdose of ignorance since you feel threatened by intellect.

3). Elvis Costello isn't anywhere near as talented as Prince. Nor as pretty. Nor as slim. And he can't dance.

You don't want anybody seriously to comment on that, do you?
you trip on the vast intellectual superiority of E Costello but you don't want to hear about P live performances? we're talking about pop music, not litterature, aren't we?

You're right, we aren't talking about 'litterature' for sure. But concerning Elvis's lyrics I bet some people like IceNine or Shausler would love to do that.

And please tell me, jnoel, where the h*** did I point out that I didn't "want to hear about P live performances"?!

I attended a show four weeks ago, and I never questioned Prince being the best live performer nowadays.

4). Those new Elvis Costello reissues have already been out once, albeit as single discs with less bonus tracks.

And why did I miss those superb Prince reissues that have been out with lots of bonus material right from the start?
so, when Michael Bolton will do the same thing (remastered releases with extra tracks)will you start a "Why I think that Michael Bolton is better than Prince" thread?
[This message was edited Mon Nov 18 8:17:09 PST 2002 by jnoel]

The question was this:

What is better?

1. Reissues as single discs first, followed by the same reissues as double discs with vast bonus material, take Costello or Bowie for example

or

2. No reissues at all, e.g. Prince?

Greetings

Anachronist

Any Prince reissues would come from Warner Brothers. WB owns the master tapes. Instead of putting a decent Prince box set they would rather spend time putting out a Elvis box that maybe 5,000 people will buy.

I seriously suspect that more people purchase Elvis Costello records than Prince records at this point.

"When I Was Cruel" came in at number 20 on the charts... while "The Rainbow Children" made it to 108.

---

The Rainbow Children is a independent record. When I was cruel has the backing of a major record label. Over the life of both of their carreers Prince has sold a hell of lot more records than Elvis. When you have time ponder that any reissues would come from Warner Brothers not Prince. Put the blame for lack of nice Prince box set on Warners. I can go into any record store and find box set for all kinds of wack-ass groups. Trust me millions of people are not buying the Monkees box set but, some sharp MBA gave the green light on the project.

Elvis Costello is consistently brilliant and I believe that his songwriting skills are far superior to Prince's... but that's not the only reason that I think he is better.

Rhino Records is re-releasing all of Elvis Costello's records in special re-mastered editions...

Elvis Costello had them release the discs as two-disc sets for the price of a single disc. That is cool in and of itself, but it gets better... the second disc of each set is loaded with alternate takes, demos, live tracks and other unreleased material.

Do you think that Prince would EVER do something this cool for his fans, or do you think that he would try to gouge you for $100 for 4 discs and NOT include anything cool?

Four discs from Elvis Costello = $30 at Best Buy
Eight discs from Elvis Costello = $60 at Best Buy
Twelve discs from Elvis Costello = $90 at Best Buy
You could technically call this 6 discs if you already have the original disc and only want the demos, outtakes and live recordings.

Four discs from Prince = $100 at NPGMC
Elvis Costello is my favorite artist!

ice, you spend $90 and get yourself 12 elvis costello discs and i'll spend the $100 at npgmc. but whilst i'm kickin' ONA live with everyone on the block, how many people gonna show up at your crib just to listen to an alternate take of "every day i write the book"??!!
"uh...sorry man i've got 2 ...trim my cuticles tonight...yeah! that's it, my cuticles!! lol

I am a member of the NPGMC for the second year in a row... and I can honestly say that NOBODY that I know would come over all excited to listen to Prince.

Me: Hey guys... you wanna come over and listen to Prince?

Friends: I'll tell you what... we will come over and kick the shit out of you for asking.

Me: Well... I'm just glad to have the company.

For my part, I think Prince pips Elvis Costello as an all round performer.

Both are great songwriters. Both are musicians. However, Prince has more wordly and general appeal--he dances, he has mastered a variety of instruments, his arrangements and production all basically come from him. His live set is, by all accounts, riveting. His output is enormous as well.

Prince has mastered a variety of musical styles: Funk (no need for examples here!), Rap (P-control), Ballads, Rock (Let's Go Crazy), Jazz (Mellow).

I think Elvis's 'Shipbuilding' a beautiful record and '...Detectives' a classic. But in terms of broad musical/entertainment ability, Prince probably pips it.

andyf

I just got back from Circuit City with 3 new Elvis Costello 2-CD sets too!

$13.99 each X 3 = $41.97

Elvis Costello is clearly the value leader in GREAT music today!
