Prince's band: backup dancers or him with a regular backing band?

prince having a band with just a bassist, drummer, keyboards, quitar. very old school or the female backing dancers which i find its very distracting. i'd rather prince with a small band. he doesnt need back-up dancers with the presence that he possesses.

The twinz have gone?! woot!

Good. Those two were a right pain in the arse, flipping their friggin' hair about... I wanted to grab them by their weaves and drag 'em off the stage!

So...er.... regular band please!

Dammit! I appear to have inadvertantly put on my invisibilty suit...

i like the basic setup of the key band players and i also like how for the leno show he had shelby j and two other beautiful talented ladies as his back up singers, that was refreshing. im not too keen on the twinz in your face dancing like loons though. it was a cool concept the first time... biggrin

I don't mind the dancers, it's when the backup singers take centre stage that I don't like. No Shelby, we don't want to hear you singing Crazy again.

Prince... Get on the mic.

And now for a cup of tea.

I partly agree with that. However talented they may be, people have come and paid to see Prince, not Prince showcasing whomever he thinks deserves centre stage. At least he had the sense to have his proteges as support acts and produce under pseudonyms in the 80s.

I didn't see the show...however...dancers on stage can be a wonderful addition to a few numbers...Background vocalists are always a nice addition as they are usually stable.
Too much commotion on stage can take away from the presentation of the music. cool

Here we are in this big ole' empty room, starin' eachother down.
U want me just as much as I want U, let's stop foolin' around.~Prince

Nix the dancers. Makes Prince look like he's trying too hard to prove his youth and virility. We know he holds it down. No need for a buncha back up singers either. Too many cooks in the kitchen...He appears stronger and tighter with just a backing band - the perfunctory personnel.

It's time for us to move this forward.

REGULAR BAND! TIGHT BAND, HIM FRONT AND CENTER, MAYBE A COUPLE BACKGROUND SOUL SINGERS.
KINDA LIKE GIRLS IN THE BOB MARLEY SHOWS. P HASNT DONE THAT YET (I DONT THINK?)

HE DONT NEED DANCERS NO MORE HE HAD THE TWINS THE LAST TWO RECORDS, AND WITH TAMAR. (YAWN) MY OPINION, HE SHOULD KEEP IT SIMPLE, SHOW HIS BRILLIANT MUSICIANSHIP WITHOUT DISCTRACTIONS.

DONT WORRY, HE GONNA CHANGE IT UP. YOU KNOW HE DOES SOMETHING DIFFERENT EACH ALBUM THATS WHY WE LOVE HIM!

the twinz last show was in december 2007 at that aircraft hanger bizzare concert thing.

btw, he played TMBGITW fully, with the band, no him on the piano rubbish. i mean full. the full song! and if im correct the last time it was played was the end of the JAM OF THE YEAR WORLD TOUR in april 1998, just before it changed to the NEWPOWER SOUL tour?

The twinz microphone stands were way too close. They are lovely young ladies, no doubt about it, and I commend them for the hair whipping around thing (How on earth do you do that without whiplash?) but its so much better when its just him and the band and a coupla backup singers, in the background.

Now, you see, that's what irritated the shit out of me! I wonder what they'd do if someone chopped all their hair off?

These girls are NOT the most talented dancers - they were obviously chosen for their novelty factor (twins, long hair, no taller than the man himself...)

Dammit! I appear to have inadvertantly put on my invisibilty suit...

Regular backing band, for sure!

That's why The Revolution was a perfect vehicle for him. Everyone fed off each other, shared common ground and even dressed like they were a family.

Of course the many incarnations of the NPG weren't bad either, though I don't think the back-up dancers were needed.

As for back-up dancers in general, I don't mind Cat, D&P and Mayte (of course)... just don't get into The Twinz because they just take the attention away from Prince when I want to keep my attention on him giggle

cloud9 The instant I heard Gold’s first note, it became Prince’s mark on my soul: a tattoo I wear with pride.
mushy Prince is Dreamy, gives my Life that Pop and 2 the industry, he’s Royalty. cool

I was cool with The Twinz and I love my girl Shelby but when I'm looking 4ward 2 seein' Prince & The NPG I'm thinkin' I'm gonna see P & The NPG. Musicology was the best band I think P had next 2 the prince band ...

prince plus dancers r a great recipe! they add to the creative mix & they've been good props... i'm sure prince loves to look at something pretty, especially when it's jumping up & down & all around plus all tht flailing around at his feet.
