Prince had it in the prime of his career. he never did interviews which made his mystic that more powerful. I think he still has a great stage presence and is a legend. I miss the days when u didn't where was coming from at all.

he acts like he still has the mysterious persona but at this stage in his life i think it's just his way of covering up when he screws something up and confounds his fans or the general public. all he has to do is post some crazy haiku with a picture of a whale on a website somewhere, and everyone will shut up and leave him alone.

My feelings? I kinda agree. It reminds me of Nermal, the cat from Garfield, and how he used his cuteness to get away with things. That's a part of the human condition, it seems - to not be able to take direct responsibility for one's actions unless directed to do so. Maybe Darwin's law will rule this out in the future.

On the other hand, it takes one to know one. I feel that the human race has a very misguisded view of what it means to take responsibility. Someone does something careless or inconsiderate, and before they even have a chance to breathe, we're on their back ramming it down their throat that their the scum of the earth.

In this way, Prince, while he has done things that I find personally repulsive, probably also has just cause for not wanting anything to do with the people that call themselves "Prince fans", because the minute he does something that doesn't live up to our exact image of who and what he should be, we turn on him quicker than a pack of dogs on a three-legged cat. Then when we're confronted for being a jerk toward Prince, we turn around and DO THE EXACT SAME THING WE ACCUSE PRINCE OF DOING.

And the fairness in this trying to get away with what we accuse others of is...?

With the popularity of the Internet, I think most artists lose some of their "mystique".


With Prince, the Internet allowed me to access all sorts of information about the guy. His previous websites (l4OA, npgmc, and 3121) allowed us to sample way more of his religious views than his albums ever revealed. Prince.org allowed uncensored discussions and news of his every move to take place. And of course, since going "Indie" Prince has actually had to promote his music meaning one disastrous interview after another. Ironically, he still tried to build a mystery for himself even as he was doing unprecedented numbers of Interviews (for Prince), and it just ended up making him look corny in my eyes. At 24, seeming like the prodigal son of James Brown, Duke Ellington, and Jimmy Hendrix, the mysterious persona was fun--at the edge of 50, it's played out to the point that the disappearance of Sondra Prill is infinitely more interesting.

The aura changes, but is actually never lost. Yes, I would say that Prince's mystique has been deflowered for quite sometime. He may be due for a cosmetic tightening.

Seriously, what killed and continues to beat the dead horse of his mystique is the apparent the belief that he needs to continually lubricate the contrived 'mystique machine' that was built for him at the beginning of his career. It was intriguing 25 years ago. He's 50 now - and mystique does not look the same.

There is nothing more interesting than a man who has lived a rich and fascinating life and is mature enough to reflect on it thoughtfully, distill his experiences, and share the good, the bad and the ugly with no shame. That's just flat sexy to me, but then this isn't about me...

Mystique intimates uniqueness and even an otherworldly quality, which Prince once possessed. Ain't nothing unique about a man pimpin' down the red carpet with two women young enough to be his daughters. It's been done, and ironically the root of Prince's mystique was that he never jumped off the same bridges that everyone else did. I guess everybody has a Geronimo moment.

The mystique can be regained, but he's gotta be less plaster of paris and more bendable titanium.

There is still some kind of mystique in that he still doesn't do the publicity thing the way other stars do, in spite of all of those parties he hosts in Hollywood. Plus, when he does decide to do an interview, he continually makes it a point to go around the questions asked instead of answering them dead on. Maybe he wants to keep the "mystique" thing going, maybe the answers are personal and he want to keep them to himself. I don't know. What I do know is that I would like Prince to open up more about himself and his experiences because as was stated before, this isn't the 80's anymore and I think it would be great to understand him a bit more. I think he can do all of that and still keep that "aura" around him. Just my
