Which instrument would you say Prince is least gifted at?

People who call themselves multi-instrumentalists are often adept at about two or three and just so-so at the rest.

We all know he's awesome on the axe, and I think he's an under-rated pianist.... but what about the rest?

How does he rank as a bass player compared to others? I know his drumming isn't exactly world-class... would you say this would be his weakest instrument on record?

That I've seen him play live? Drums. (Though the man knows his way around a beat)

That he's rumored to play at least once in his life? Any of the wind instruments, like sax.

That he himself would think? Nothing. It's all in his head. He can play it all.

The first thing that came to mind was the drums, not that he isn't good. Compared to guitar or keys, I've never heard him do anything as exceptional as he's done on the guitar or the keyboard.

i was wondering about his ability to play horns actually...

did I hear mention of him playing harmonica at some stage? That doesn't seem right, but I feel like I read that somewhere

I consider him a brilliant guitarist, an underrated bassist, an OK drummer, and an overrated keyboard player.

And I wouldn't be surprised if that also correlates to the number of hours he's spent practising each instrument.

Is that a microphone in his pants eek eek . I think the tamborine could be his least gifted skill, but that's why he gets the audience to play for him.

"GIFTED" at?
Guitar? Definately.
Piano? I don't know if i'd call him "gifted". He's a really good keyboard player, but i don't think you could call him "gifted".
Bass? He is an extremely underrated bassist, but again i don't think i'd say he's gifted.
Drums? No. He knows his way around a kit, but he's definately not "gifted".

What is important is the way his brilliant musical mind is expressed through each instrument. He may not be a virtiouso at the drums or piano but he always has unique musical expressions on each instrument. He has some of the most distinctive bass lines (Lets Work, Lady Cab Driver), drum patterns (777-9311, Irresistable B), and piano ballads (too many to name) in pop music history.

I love his drumming (good examples are ´Glass Cutter´ and ´Crystal Ball´), but maybe it´s the instrument he masters less.

...would have to agree. have not heard a great variety in beats, and i think the rhythm of 1+1+1=3 and Erotic City would sum up Prince's fav groove. then again, if it's him playing on jazz songs like "strollin'" i stand to be corrected.

The Dortmund concert. Piano in the Xtreme. smile I love his guitar playing more than anything else, but he really impresses me when he plays keys. Ain't but one Mozart, now, but I just love how he plays da piana.
