hahaha. oh, wait, you are serious.
The expanded version of my book PRINCE and The Purple Rain Era Studio Sessions 1983-1984 was released in November 2018. (www.amazon.com/gp/product/1538114623/ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_bibl_vppi_i0) or www.facebook.com/groups/1...104195943/

Me personally I love the Rainbow Children. It's weird, obscure, jazzy, funky, and spiritual, though definately not commercial. I remember when I saw the Hit and Run tour right before the album dropped, and my mom went to the concert with me and bought me a T-shirt with the album art on the front. It has holes in it and I still wear it. Rave is also cool because it takes me back to my college days and all my friends who thought I was weird for listening to Prince finally began to give Prince his props being that Rave was sort of a comeback album. The video to "The Greatest Romance Ever Sold" was actually played on MTV. That was when MTV was actually cool.

The Rainbow Children, even with the anti-Semitism, sexism, and religious dogma.

Rave is just so...desperate or something. Like he really wanted to make a hit at any cost, and it ended up sucking out the heart and creativity of his work. There are a couple nice songs on it, but for the most part, it's a hodgepodge of disingenuous, flaccid filler. I don't buy "I Love U, But I Don't Trust U Anymore" for a second. And let's face it: "Wherever U Go, Whatever U Do" is even worse than "Graffiti Bridge."

The Rainbow Children hands down!

The Rainbow Children could easily be one my favorite Prince albums of all time if he removed the annoying Darth Vader voice.....

TRC - without question. The musical artistry on the album is awesome. The lyrics are whack, but the music blows me away.

"Rave" is an album that got repetitive play in my home...right in line with the cd's that came before...and "The Rainbow Children." followed suit...Each record has it's own life...

"The Rainbow Children," has that added quality of being a whole story...which brings with it the historical days before television when families gathered around radio shows...although it's a musical script...It's brilliant...as is..."Sergeant Pepper's," The movie tells a story...regardless of all the negative criticism that movie took. cool
"The Lion Sleeps Tonight...

Not to "true" P fans. Most "true" P fans love TRC. We just think Rave is a "good" album.

I guess I am not a "TRUE" P fan. I'll have to re-evaluate my 25 years of buying every release, going to over 15 concerts, watching his movies, reading the books about him, and writing for UPTOWN magazine for years.

I had no idea that we had taken a vote on what is required to be a "true" fan. I must have missed the meeting when 'individual tastes' were put to a vote.

Thanx for he heads up.

TRC hands down. At least it sounds inspired and daring. Prince actually attempted to add a significant work to his legacy, even if it happens to be horribly uneven and rigid in its perspective on world issues.

Rave is the worst Prince album of all time. It reeks of boredom and desperation. It's full of guests that contribute nothing, lifeless, plastic production, insipid lyrics, and let's not forget his worst cover of all time. The album is absolute garbage.

Rave is so bad, that if that CD rubbed up against crap, crap would try to clean Rave off of it. lol

OK, so in context, Rave isn't all bad. The problem is comparing Rave and TRC to ANYTHING that Prince released before 1988. They really are sub-par albums with only a few good songs. Overall, I hate to say it, but most of his stuff for years has been boring, which may be the worst thing I can say to an artist as talented as Prince.

I'm not trying to tell him to change because he is an amazing artist and can do as he pleases, but "forgettable" is a phrase I never thought I'd say about Prince's work, and since leaving WB, I think 80-95% of what he's released has been boring.
