I think it would've been a risk NOT doing the Batman album considering how poorly Lovesexy was received in the US. Batman was $$$$$ and the themes of duality of the characters slot right into what Prince had been doing the previous few years, it was a cake-walk.

Nah. Prince was still made of Teflon at that point in his career. He could've done anything and it would've been pretty much well received.

Nicholson being a huge fan certainly didn't hurt.

batman saved his career in the usa...he really needed the money..love sexy only made number 11 in the usa,. The next year batman ost spent six weeks at no 1.

how do know this...?

becuase I have no life...

The Batman soundtrack was the LEAST risky think Prince had ever done. I like the CD well enough, but it really didn't fit the movie - and the movie wasn't all that good to be honest:

Maybe one day soon they'll make a really good Batman movie

IMO Batman at the time was one of the first "remakes" that we ever had to endure.Tim Burtons vision of a gothic city was perfect...as was his decision to cast Michael Keaton as Batman....Keaton did an excellent job...As a fan of the movies it broke my heart when Joel Schumacher decided to ruin what Tim Burton had created.Dont get me wrong 8mm,Flatliners and Phonebooth are a few of my favourite films, but he turned Gotham City into a neon world which I totally despised.....the icing on the cake was when skates came out of Batmans shoes in Batman and Robin....shock..horror.

Anyway I digress,Prince didnt take a risk with the Batman soundtrack. He would have known it was going to be a winner beforehand. Before The Most Beautiful Girl In The World,BatDance was his biggest hit in the UK going straight in at #2 and only being held off the top spot by Soul II Soul Back To Life (However Do You Want Me).
So i suppose what im trying to say is the Batman album was a great move for our wee man.

On a side note, any vinyl collectors out there, have you ever noticed the spelling mistake on your Batman album picture disc?

Even so, it's not particularly good. There are strange holes in the plot where the producer Jon Peters and Tim Burton didn't see eye to eye, and Kim Basinger, then the producer's real-life girlfriend, is a waste of space. eek

And to suggest the Anton Furst commited suicide because of this film is a disgrace.Furst had tried to get work in direction and then split up with his girlfriend Beverly D'Angelo 2 years after Batman was released....so dont try and connect it to,your so called "Princes' "risk" with Batman""

I don't think the piece was suggesting his suicide was linked to the movie, they just like to add these macabre facts in. It was only a little piece in the entertainment pullout of the newspaper. I imagine they got all their facts for it from Wikipedia, I mean calling Prince 'the hippest musician on the planet'... in 1989, really?

I think thats B.S. no way would MJ have done a new album barely a year after Bad. A themed album isn't something he'd be capable of either IMO.

i think bad was released in '87 so it was well over a year..but m.j. did get approached 1st.there was even a rumor that i heard that the lp was gonna be one side m.j.(good/batman) and one side prince(evil/joker).anyway whatever the real issue was it doesnt matter..prince got the job.i like all the songs alot except for the arms of arion

Risk? Not in my view. P never took the easy road anyway, look at Around The World In A Day coming after Purple Rain. I can see him really getting into the project, going to Tim with all those songs that match the film perfectly, that seem to tap into Tim's vision, and Tim seeing that no other muscians' music would have fit next to songs like Vicki Waiting or Lemon Crush.

If you think about it, Batdance was the first ever audio trailer for a film. (well that I can think of). I really like the album and felt it went well with Tim's view of Batman.

MJ would not even have been approached to do this. P was a WB artist and they were keeping it in the family. Hollywood A Listers do have a say in the soundtrack artists.

?????

LoveSexy was well received? He was losing $1000 by the week at that time. The story back then said Batman saved Prince.....

Actually, it was! The Alphabet St. video got played EVERYWHERE (mostly due to the Black Album reference) and the Lovesexy Tour was EXTREMELY profitable (and a hell of a show).

It wasn't a risk at all. Actually, it helped him get back in the spotlight again. Despite what so many Prince fans these days will say, those albums that followed "Purple Rain" in the late 1980s were not well liked here in America and people were saying that Prince had gone "far out", was on a 60s/70s retro trip, and had lost his damn mind. "Batman" came out totally modern sounding at the time and was cold and dark sounding similar to the "old Prince". It was the first album since "Purple Rain" that I didn't hear people making fun of.

I loved the album but I hated that damn movie though. Major disappointment. I was expecting something comical like the old TV series. lol

And this has to do with batman? hmmm

Let me give that a shot. Stick with me here, I'm tryin' to understand the mindset of Tame the insane: You gotta go a bit Kevin Bacon with it. Okay, Beyonce sang Purple Rain with Prince at the Grammies (more commonly known as the Grannies); Beyonce was also in Dreamgirls with tranny admirer Eddie Murphy; Eddie Murphy did Bowfinger with Steve Martin, Steve Martin introduced Prince's legendary performance of Fury on SNL; at the end of that episode of SNL Steve Martin closed the show flanked by both Prince and Alex Baldwin; both fucked Kim Basinger; Alex married Kim and made kids and movies with her; whereas, using black magic (National Enquirer), Prince made a 12 inch, a music video, an album and sloppy honey love with her; she starred in Batman and Prince did said soundtrack and sampled her (in more ways than one).
Pffwww, it was difficult, but i did it! lol

Also, Tame, amongst your Mark Chapman-like ramblings you said: "Pink Panther...And I bet there won't be a follow up to it either, because of all the damn mistakes in the first one. " Dude, IMDB Steve Martin and you'll find: "Pink Panther 2 (2009) (completed) (screenplay) (actor)"

Don't pick up your copy of Catcher In The Rye, dude, don't do it....

Both Tim Burton AND Jack Nicholson wanted Prince to do a couple of songs for the soundtrack. Burton also wanted other artist involved as well. However, not too long after Prince accepted... he presented Tim with more than an an albums worth of material. Tim basically told everyone else 'never mind' and went with an all Prince soundtrack.

Batman itself was a good movie. A lot of critics thought it was too dark and some compared it too the 60's serial. But word of mouth from comic geeks supported the film as it portayed the 'real' Batman and Jack's over the top Joker stole the show. Hence it was a box office success and the sequel did good as well.

Joel Shoemacher (sp?) took over in #3.. and was a fan of the 60's serial. Thus he ruined what Tim Burton had built and turned the dark night into a comic skit. The current movies reclaim the 'dark' edge.
I agree with most of your post but the part in bold confirms what I have read in the book Possessed by Alex Hahn, It states that he pushed his music onto people in a point of that book. I like only a few songs on the soundtrack but some I didnt like quite so well(everyone is different). The movie I own still a cool movie to watch from time to time (especially when nothing good is on tv on certan days). I liked the "dark" feel of Gotham City and the Batman suit and all Joker (Jack) was cool and did a very good job portraying the Joker. The album part I would of liked a couple of other artist on there just to add to the mix. All in all the soundtrack could of been better IMHO. That is just my 2 cents!
