One Of Us....Prince vs. Joan Osborne

Just learned that One of Us is Joan Osborne's first hit, however Prince sings it with so much more passion. A beautiful song.

I like Prince's intro and the sound (reminds me of Love thy will be done)
he brings 2 the song but how he sings the chorus ruins it 4
me...and a lot of people I played the song 4.
2 bad really, because the rest of the song is really good!

i can appreciate joan's version,but i really dig p's version.
it has more soul and that guitar at the end seals it 4 me

Originalis almost always better.

Here Prince does an impressive version but its just too over the top and the replacement of "slave" for "slob" robs the song of most of its charm.

I hate Prince's version. I hate all of Prince's cover versions with the exception of I Cant Make You Love Me and Case of U and Whole Lotta Love.

Joan's is much better. Prince's version is pointless at best. Remaking a song that's still in heavy rotation isn't exactly an original move, especially for an album that was supposed to be an opus.

I love Prince's version. Never liked the original at all, lyrically I find it interesting but it's as dull as dishwater to listen to. IMHO. smile

Question

Prince all the way.

Prince brought more out of the song. He made u feel
the emotion of the song and he gave us his beautiful
spiritual feel.

Another classic rose

All that I remember of hearing the song a couple of times, is that it reminded me of, "Love Thy Will be done."

see the things is...it doesnt matter if its Creep,One Of Us,Best of You,Betcha By Golly Wow,Everdays A Winding Road,A Case Of U,I Cant Make You Love Me,Just My Imagination there are people who are going to pick Prince's version regardless if they have heard the original or not.

just my opinion.
Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!
woot!

and what may I ask is so wrong with that. Some musicians/artists are much better than others.

Both versions stink. The song makes no sense. Perhaps, they forgot, God WAS one of us. We crucified Him. That's what we'd do if God was one of us. Never liked the song.
Making love and music are the only things worth fighting for.

Imago

The Prince version is better.

I like the Joan Osborne version, but considering just how powerful her singing voice is, I found the song tame and way too safe. Prince's version , on the other hand, pushed and shoves it's way into our hearts and assholes. mushy

Prince's version packs the kind of wallop that a big question like "What if God was one of us?" deserves. Joan Osborne's version is a simpering waste of tape that makes me want to shoot out the radio.
