I read that Prince covered this song at the private party (premiere of 21 Nights book) he gave for a selected celebs. What is the meaning behind Crimson and Clover? What would prompt Prince to cover it, after all it came out in the 60's, but more popular in the 80's.

What prompted him to cover it? Uh, I'll say because he liked the song and he wanted to do it. No different than Prince covering "Let's Go" by The Cars. Tommy James o.g. song of Crimson and Clover is a bangin' song. The lyrics were very progressive and suggestive sexually. Especially for the times. Joan Jett's version is cool too. Obviously Prince dug the song or he wouldn't have covered it.

I just picked up Tommy James and the Shondells just for this song yesterday. Didn't realize Prince had covered it. It's a great song.

The meaning behind Crimson and Clover? Well, I always thought Crimson represented blood and Clover perhaps represents a male organ. The line "over and over" to me always represented having sex over and over. The line "I want to do everything" to me always represented trying all of the sexual positions. Just my thought.

"Crimson and Clover" is a Jimmy Eat World song.




side note - is it a coincidence the acronym for Jimmy Eat World is J.E.W.? Are they a jewish band?
