Don't forget about "The Beautiful Ones". ...Prince's "best" material and his "most beautiful" material are two different things. Besides, one could easily argue that Prince wrote his best when he was with Vanity. Word is that he wrote possibly his best song ever, When Doves Cry, about Susan. Susan from Vanity 6, not Susanah. Point is, while Prince was "with" Susanah, he was also "with" other women at the same time. Just like he was with Vanity, Susan and Jill all at the same time. And no telling how many other women he was with when he wasn't touring. Women that haven't been glorified as Prince women. Women we know nothing about. He could have written Adore or The Beautiful Ones about some chic named Nancy Mcadoo for all we know.

....and don't forget "If I Was U're Girlfriend", which he wrote because he was jealous that he couldn't share the same closeness with Susannah that she shared with her sister Wendy.

Re: 'other women', both "Pink Cashmere" and "Vicky Waiting" were originally written for his then girlfriend Anna Garcia. While not in the same league as the songs you guys have previously mentioned, "Vicky Waiting" especially contains some personal moments.

Personally, I don't think its that his best material has been written with Susannah, but rather when he's feeling a bit down. However, I would NEVER wish Prince to be unhappy just for the sake of good music.

Don't you think that...on some level...Prince creates the various emotional "environments" necessary for him to create great songs? And that unhappiness can be one of those emotional environments?

Erm, whoever he was bearding with had little if anything to do with his hardest stuff. His best IMHO was pre-PR, and even though he had gems after that he fell off. I think the state of the industry had more to do with the shift.

It has been documented that Prince wrote The Beautiful Ones about Susannah. Prince wanted her but she had a boyfriend ("Do u want him or do u want me cuz I want u").

And by the way, Nancy Mcadoo is big Bob Mcadoo's sister.

That's what I basically what I said a few months back. That not every song from that Susannah love era so to speak was written about her.Us on the outside really don't know. The only person that knows is Prince.

Some people think I'm kinda cute
But that don't compute when it comes 2 Y-O-U.

Just to play devil's advocate here, maybe it wouldn't be so bad if Prince was deeply hurt again and made some great music because of it. I mean, he seems to have healed from Susannah, and yet the great songs he wrote about her are going to exist forever.

Thanks.

When you observe someone over time (even on a superficial level), you start notice patterns. Prince seems to like his bliss with a side of chaos. If it didn't work for him, he'd do something else.

didnt he write nothing compares 2 u for susannah too? I would certainly say this was a watershed period for prince - and susannah was a constant troughout that - whichever other women came and went.

Yep, I'd agree completely. Doesn't mean he didn't write great material before - he did - lots, and after - well a little.

I agree with the threadstarter.

But was it, because of that relationship, that he wrote his best material? Or was he 'on a roll' in that period of his life, and that brought him 'the girlfriend'? (the chicken-egg thing...).

By the way, i really disagree with some people here who say he was writing his most mature material when he was with Mayte.

The songs he recorded and release during his time with Susannah (parts of the Parade album, the Dream factory, Sign of the Times) are, lyrically, among his most honest and 'human' ones.
He sings about selfdoubt, the complications you fase within a relationship, the complexity of men - women friendships etc.

When it comes to the 'Mayte'-years i always felt they were a step back for him lyrically. Mayte often appearing in his lyrics as the withgoing 'pixie' he could both guide and idolise.
More of a dreamlike, streamlined fairytale of a 'relationship' then the 'reality' of strong women of flesh and blood he was dealing with in his lyrics on Sign of the Times.

Not quite! - At least P and M had a relationship. MJ was trying to convince the world that he is into women - there's no question that P is into women and was into Mayte
