Computer Blue... Lyrics

I know there are several versions of this song. Just the other day I was playing Computer Blue for a friend and we got into a discussion about the different versions of the song. I have never heard any other versions. I have only read about the hallway speech version.

My friend told me that there is a version with more lyrics to it, and an verse where you can hear prince singing "Should I go to church on Sunday---"

Does any one have the complete lyrics for this version? I have never heard of such a version.

I was gonna start a topic on the meaning of computer blue...how odd....anyway, here baby.

Wendy?

Yes Lisa

Is the water warm enough?

Yes Lisa

Shall we begin?

Yes Lisa

Ow!
Where is my love life?
Where can it be?
There must be something wrong with the machinery

Where is my love life?
Tell me, where has it gone?
Somebody please, please tell me what the hell is wrong

CHORUS:
Till I find the righteous one
Computer blue
Till I find the righteous one
Computer blue

Oh

Where is my baby?
Where can she be?
Somebody please, please tell me what is wrong with me

Where is my baby?
Where has she gone?
Somebody please, please tell me what the hell is wrong

CHORUS

Yeah

The computer's on the verge of breakdown!

Come on
Oh baby, don't make me

Poor lonely computer
It's time someone programmed U
It's time U learned love and lust
They both have 4 letters
But they're entirely different words
Poor lonely computer
Poor, poor lonely computer
Do U really know what love is?

(Na, na, na, na, na)
Wave your hands in the air!
Now everybody sing it! (Na, na, na, na, na)
Everybody work out
Work out, work out (Na, na, na, na, na)
Everybody work out
Work out, work out (Na, na, na, na, na)
Everybody work out

He didn't like living alone
The house where he lived had many hallways
It was a long walk 2 his bedroom
Because 2 him each hallway represented an emotion
Every one vastly different from the next
One day while she was with him
He decided 2 name each one
She walked by his side, one hand on his thigh
No - she was sort of half a step behind him
Yeah, the grip on his thigh intensified
As they walked slowly through the corridor
He named the hallway "Lust"
And as they passed through the next one
He named it "Fear"
The grip she now loosened
So he walked faster
Her hands now trembling
She let dropped 2 her side as he wrote the word "Insecurity"
He looked into her eyes and smiled a demon smile
And quickly walked onto the next
Corridor after corridor
He named almost all when suddenly… he stopped
He picked up the word "Hate"
She was gone
So he picked up another – "Pain"

On the verge of a breakdown
What is life without love?
It's hell, Computer Blue!

Father, Father, the sun is gone
(Father, Father) The Dawn, the Dawn
Father, Father, where is the Dawn?
(Where is the Dawn, Father?)
(Na, na, na, na, na) {x2}
Na, na, na, na, na

Shall I go 2 church on Sundays?
Shall I stay home and pray?
Shall I try 2 make her happy?
Shall I try 2 make her stay?

Where is my love life?
Tell me, where can it be?

Narrow-minded computer
(Somebody please, please tell me…)
It's time someone programmed U
(Somebody please, please tell me what's wrong with me)
It's time U learned women are not butterflies
They're computers 2
Just like U Computer Blue
(Where is my baby?)
Chauvinistic computer
It's time someone programmed U (Na, na, na, na, na)
U fall in love 2 fast and hate 2 soon
And take 4 granted the feeling's mutual
(The feeling's mutual!)
We're computers 2
Just like U, Computer Blue

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah!

^ Personally, I think this version blows the CD one out of the water. It should have been on the soundtrack...I mean, you can hear the Revolution playinbg it in the movie at one point during the rehearsal scene. confused

this is the hallway speech, not in the version iam referring to, but the rest of the lyrics are correct.

I could never say this song has a single meaning. Because it jumps back and forth between something obviously religious and the classic "f*cked up relationship" theme.
But I REALLY want to see what others have to say.

Five ones that are different from the album version or five including the album version?

P.S. Love this extended track, just listened to it on the way home from work. And Tora, I agree with ya - the extended versions make the album track look like child's play - I really wish he could have included the entire thing.

Five that are different from the album version nod
Each version is pretty different. Two are really messy and kinda have bad sound quality mixed in with good cleaned up sound quality. And I think three are good studio quality.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
I might list them and tell the difference later.

Yep, all five versions are better than the album version, IMO. If you ignore the bad sound quality of some. I actually have two outtake versions (one bad quality one with the hallway speech and on good quality one with no hallway speech) on my Ipod replacing the album version. nod
I wonder why oh why he didn't use one of the longer versions. neutral

I have the version with the line you're talking about. I barely ever listen to it though. Too long

At that part he says

Should I go to church on Sunday
Should I stay home and pray
Should I try to make her happy
Should I try to make her stay
Maybe we can go to the movies and cry together

Could Warner Bros. have obliged Prince to edit it to 3:59?
U know, PURPLE RAIN was also a mainstream album, so an over-14-minute track was not a great idea for the big audience...

The editing of tracks isn't usually (if ever) anything to do with WB.

Prince edited the track down further as he worked on the album configuration, adding tracks to the album - 'Take Me With U' was added to the album after Prince decided to remove some of the more top drawer stuff from the Apollonia 6 album to keep for himself or use for Sheila E's first LP.

You can see this editing in process in the circulating versions of Computer Blue - There's the longest versions, unedited and unsegued, then an edited version that is still longer than the album version, but omits the 'hallway speech' that segues into Darlin' Nikki, and then the released version, which is further edited down.
