Just read the lyrics--this is moreso poetry than a true song--yes? No?

It was only until very recently that I knew it was a cover of Joni Mitchell!

Prince seems to miss out the whole first verse as well eek

Favourite song on that album though! biggrin

I was gonna comment on something else but now that you mention it as a Joni Mitchell
song, I think I might have heard it. I think I have her CD somewhere.
If only I could find it in my very unorganized room.

This song is my absolute favorite Prince tune (even though it's not his, but Joni Mitchells).

Love the melody, the words, the feelings he puts into it, the sound of his voice, the harmonies...

I remember listening to it at a time where I was going through a lot of emotional stuff. Couldn't listen to it without crying, and yet I had to hear it over and over again. Just love the way music works like that... rainbo

I was at a friends and we decided to watch a film called Practical magic. There's a scene where someone's driving in car and Joni's version starts playing.

My friend starts singing it saying it's one of her fave songs. It then clicks with me to what it is and I go screaming on about Prince's version - and then switch the film off and make her listen to the whole One nite alone album from my little phone speaker.

A good night!!!! biggrin biggrin

It's from the Joni Mitchell album 'Blue' which is a great listen and I urge everyone to own, as well as the brilliant 'Ladies of the Canyon' which came just before.

I greatly prefer Joni's original. Prince's lyrical cuts remove so much from the song that it loses a great deal of meaning.

Tori Amos did a great version
But I love his live '83 version and his One Nite Alone version, but more than anything i love his his mellow guitar (instead of piano) version from 4 april 98's paisley Villanova Park version - 8 1/2 minutes of beauty - so, so mellow (that whole concert with Jimi's Machine Gun & Villanova Junction, was a total thing of beauty)

Beautiful...

The 1983 version is my favourite and (as I've posted before) was sufficiently different from the Joni original that by changing the lyrics it became his song, which he did on I Love U, But I Don't Trust U Anymore, with some adjustments.

Prince's 1st Ave 83 version is the best. I love the rehearsal verion to that performance also. It's great.
Some people think I'm kinda cute
But that don't compute when it comes 2 Y-O-U.

Oh yeah, this song is totally a masterpiece, 5 stars. It's ironic that I think the chorus refers to drinking a case of beer without passing out. lol I so envy those of you who have heard Prince sing other versions of this gem. Maybe someday I will too.

PRINCE picked the right verse choice during that 1983 first avenue performance. that part actually comes in the middle of the song. it shows you how he could do know wrong back then. the strumming of the quitar with the tone of voice that he used.....pure brillance lol

Yes, would love to hear the acoustic guitar version of this one, or any version he plays, really...

I first heard the rehearsal of 83 back in '96, then the 1st ave 83 performance.
Loved them both. I also remember him singing it when I saw him at the Hollywood Bowl back in '97, during the Jam Of The Year tour. I believe he sang it falsetto on acoustic guitar.

Never heard him sing the full version. Great song. I liked Diana Krall's version also.

Do you mean I Love U But I Don't Trust You Anymore is Prince rewriting A Case Of U?

I guess it's similar but I never made the connection.

I love the First Avenue version, the chimey guitar intro is very cool and he does make it his own. I love his little vocal yelp at the end, he's definitely feeling it.

I love this song as well...I've only heard the ONA piano version, not any of P's live performances or Joni's original. sad

But back in '02 when I got ONA piano, this track was instantly my favorite on the disc; I played it over and over and over for WEEKS. Just couldn't get enough...so beautiful. Prince's voice was so great and the piano sounded absolutely breathtaking. I was (and still am) SO disappointed that it was only one verse!!! pissed I want to hear P's FULL version on piano...that would be cloud9

Y'all should check out the orchestral remake Joni made of "A Case of You" for her "Both Sides, Now" album. It is breathtakingly beautiful, wistful and definitive. That album is also worth checking out for the orchestral remake of the title song.
