Why does Prince do so many covers?

he has enough of his own material! most of which he's never performed. and pretty much all of his covers are very lackluster, imo. maybe he's bored with his own work... shrug

just wondering
cream.

I loved the covers of "Creep"
& the Superbowl...
other than that, I don't think I heard
anything else.
Maybe as prb said, as far as appealing to a fan base.

I have to agree with you for the part of why do covers when he's got enough of his own tracks that he's never performed!!!

I have to admit though that with all the Live shows I've seen (30+), I do quite enjoy it when he does the odd cover here or there!

I remember being quite surprised when Emancipation was released because after som many years of releasing his own work, it suddenly contained 4 covers - 1 of which was the lead single release! Strange confused

I've been wondering this too - the aftershow at the last night in London (21st night) contained LOADS of covers which seemed weird on a night when he could pretty much guarantee an audience full of hardcore fans who would have recognised and loved obscure old album tracks.

It seems weird that he is SO possessive about his own artistic 'ownership' and other people not borrowing his creations... but then he seems quite happy to borrow other people's creations. Yes I know his argument is about fair recognition of copyright and stuff and he lets other artists cover his work, I just find it counter intuitive that he would go to the trouble of getting the permission (I assume) to perform covers when he has so much of his own fantastic material in the archives. I also find it a bit of a clash with his purist/ownership views when he messes about with other people's creations eg. changing the words to Creep. I'm not criticising, I loved his version, I'm just confused that the same person can have seemingly contradictory views... wait, what am I saying, this is a man who can change his mind more often than his underwear!

I guess one other consideration is that he seems to have mixed feelings about some of his back catalogue - he 'cleans up' some of the lyrics in stuff he does perform, and obviously won't play the really dirty ones (very disappointing!). I wonder as well if he has negative associations with some of the work because of the time period in which he wrote it or the circumstances around it. I've read someone else say on here that they can understand why he doesn't want to perform too many things he wrote for his ex-wives when those feelings are gone, and there were also bad feelings around the whole of the Black album for him.

Anyway - I like to hear him do covers, but I'd like even more to hear him do some lesser known album material of his own!
You might not like the taste but I'm still gonna stick your face in this FUNK

I always thought how great it was that he didn't do many covers. There was a stretch between "For you" and "Chaos and disorder" that he didn't officially release one cover. That's a span of almost twenty years. It wasn't until "Emancipation" that he officially released a cover (3 of them, that I can think of, on that CD).. I have no problems with him doing covers.
Making love and music are the only things worth fighting for.

MrVortex

Well, his covers ratio on official releases is not very high at all (or successful).

As for the stuff done at live shows, I often feel it is a way of mixing things up. Sometimes they come off sometimes they do not. However, some of Prince's great Live moments have been covers:

Just my Imagination (Small Club)
Guitar Solo on While My Guitar Gently Weeps
Miss You (With Ron Wood)

Plus, as a friend of mine (who is not remotely into Prince) will tell you, he is still picking up his jaw from watching Prince rip through A Whole Lotta Love from the Indigo show last year.

Yeah!!!! And I'd stick around, so he could show me how it's done!!!! lol

Trying to cover his songs though is impossible! It's bad enough trying them on Karaoke!

Our pub near work that has Karaoke on Fridays, has got a new company doing it and their Prince selection is like 10 times better than the last lot, they even have album tracks.

I put my name down for Pussy control and Sexy MF a couple of weeks ago, but had to leave before my name got called. Soooo have to go back to do these!!! lol lol lol

In East London - Anything goes!!!!

They've got 'The beautiful ones' too! I would love to get up there and just scream the place down!!! lol

Although, if it's anything like my rendition of Tambourine - My housework/hoovering song to sing - I'll probably end up being sectioned!!!!

Either that, or end up with a huge bill for all the shattered glasses and windows!!!! confused lol lol lol

Personally, for someone with a career of 30 years, i think Prince hasn't really done THAT much covers.

Okay, live (especially during aftershows) he plays quite a lot of covers, but dont forget he performs live far more often then the 'general big names'.

On record he certainly is no Rod Stewart or Paul Anka.

Rollercoaster of love (?)
Come Together (Beatles)
The Long and winding road (The Beatles)

Why not? covers are probably like a quarter (or less) of what he actually writes and plus people cover him all the time
