imho i think that 'blacksweat' isn't so as i've read/heard 'space aged/hitch/pitched sounding' than a lot of his earlier work. if you listen to P's earlier music..its the same. i've always heard the same pitches and style..with black sweat and his early work.(just maybe he turned it up a bit more w/3121...'black sweat' ) but I hear the same thing in both. that's how i've always seen it..i honestly dont think anyone else hears this other than me.. cool

Yeah!

I've said it before, but its tracks like this that makes his "real music, by real musicians!" backfire a bit.

Some of his music just wasn't meant to be performed by a full band! The 2 Minute Bass solo that preceded this track sometimes at the O2 shows did rock though!

Its not too far removed from Kiss and I think showed a hint of his old studio wizard magic that has been missing for so long. but I dont think he's ever used that sine-wave "Summertime" pitch sound before. I could be wrong.

Its just too loud in the mix and ruins the song.

His best and most obvious single for some time....very funky. Its minimalist funk...hence the Kiss comparisons, but it heavier than kiss. I agree that "summertime" synth feels slightly wrong - definitely too heavy in the mix, but without it, it would be lacking.

the bass solo was cool but it did seem a bit forced 2 me. it didn't flow like how we do a bass solo on say let's work or on face down. it was like he was trying 4 that real music by real musicians mentality. somehow when he got 2 vegas, the beat wasn't as dominating as it was at the aftershow of the bet awards imo shrug
man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

wots your opinion on this song?

It lacks something.

Actually it lacks a lot. It's like a bad self-parody.

I agree. I think it lacks the basics - like a proper melody. Dull and desperate IMHO

I know what you mean.
And yet he played an accoustic version during the musicology tour that was incredible.
Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!

This song eventually grew on me.

I hated it when it came out. It sounded like P was doing a bad Dr Dre G-Funk impersonation a decade late.

But then I saw him do it live and absolutely slaughter that bass. And then I finally bothered to watch the great video.

So now I rather like it!

I fucking LOVE Black Sweat. I remember the first time I heard the song, I was shaking. It had been so long since Prince made a song so funky and danceable like that. I nearly cried cause I had been praying for a song like that to come out and Black Sweat was what I needed. It was also one of the rare times in org history that people were more positive than negative over new Prince music. That made it even more special. MTV played the hell outta that song but it's still saddens me that radio practically ignored it. This song was the reason why I finally stopped listening to the radio. It belonged there with the other stuff. All that aside, Black Sweat still kicks ass! music
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

Nice in the beat department, poor in the songwriting department.

With a better composition it could have been a worthy 'follow up' to Kiss, but unfortunately it lacks what many Prince songs from the '00's lack: a decent composition.

It's not my favourite track but it's the one track that takes me straight back to the o2 shows, with the 'aliens have landed' lighting and all that - It always makes me grin when I hear it!
