Prince's accent Can somebody shed some light on Prince's accent (when speaking) for those of us not from the US? Does he have a typical Minnesota/Minneapolis accent? I sense that sometimes he makes a concerted effort to change his accent as he thinks it doesn't sound hip, funky or tough enough to go with his own 'badass' image. | |

I grew up in the midwest and have a midwestern accent. It was never noticable to me until I moved to the south and now I get commented on it all the time. In fact, my husband teases me about my accent sometimes. I don't think so. He always sounds the same to me. His voice got deeper (It seems to me) in the earlier eighties, but he got older, whod'a thunk? | |

I was just thinking the other day as I was listening to The Cross that he says "y'all" just as well as any good southerner does. How odd is that coming from a mid-westerner? Do y'all use y'all commonly? | |

Well, P's people probably CAME from the south a few generations or so ago. A lot (not all) of blacks moved UP to the north. So he can't be too far removed from all that. And as far as the language he uses in his music, I would think that's another issue. That's more of a made up style, say whatever sounds good kinda thing. | |

Anyone who thinks Prince doesn't have an accent should listen to the opening of Calhoun Square (from the Crystal Ball set). Listen to how he says the word "work." That hard "R" is pure upper midwestern. No one's ever so poor, they can't pick up their yard. Grandma Loy | |
