he's also said in years past that he enjoys bjork and cocteau twins. plus, it's no secret that he's an admirer of kate bush.

i wouldn't doubt that his choice of performing a radiohead song was strategic for the benefit of the coachella audience, but why "creep"? the foo fighters song seemed like a more logical choice, as it was a bit more current. "creep" is so not-prince in terms of its lyrics, not to mention there are radiohead songs much more suited to his style of playing. i'd love to have heard him tackling "just", for example. not that i'm complaining. it's pretty amazing to hear prince cover ANYTHING by radiohead. it just seemed like a really random choice, kinda like when he covered that cars song during 7/7/07 last year.

He likes Cocteau Twins? Wow... didn't know that. They're probably my #3 or #4 all time favorite bands. I'd love to hear Prince do something that really evoked the Twins But I dont think that'll happen because he seems not to do that type of emotion based music too often anymore.

Talkin of Twins has he ditched the Twinz? didnt see them on leno or coachella clips, or did I miss em? Hes always been a bit fickle with his dancers.

Having stood at the V Festival and witnessed Radiohead play this at the loudest volume I have ever heard I can honestly say that nobody could do a better version. Some songs/bands played live are so completely different to what we hear on a cd. Radiohead are one of them. Fucking awesome live band.

James are another, as are the Dandy Warhols and Kula Shaker. Other bands are often horrendous or just plain dull live (The Killers for instance).

I guess it also depends on whether the person enjoys live bands over recorded.

Not all live bands should be considered musically focused either. Take the Spice Girls or Girls Aloud. You can't tell me that the people coming out of their gigs haven't had the time of their lives. It's my idea of hell (unless they were naked and performing felatio on each other) but to others it's the be all and end all.

Horses for courses. Creep rocks! Prince is too happy to do it justice.

I would be interested to know what the Radiohead fans are saying about his version.

Radiohead fans seem to be saying much what the Prince fans are saying (Why did he do it? Was it a diss? Why did he choose Creep, of all songs?) except that they seem to like it a lot more! Some sample comments:

'It was amazing, a little slower than the original, with Prince making the guitar grunts way more bitter and edgy sounding. Great, great musical moment!'

'it was amazing...Great rocking guitar riffs that only Prince can do...'

'i LOVED it. the changes were cool, made it more of his own than a straightforward cover.'

etc etc...nearly everyone who had actually heard it seemed to like it.

Yes, he did his own version of this one, without copying the original. Execpt from the fantastic guitar-solo (as always), I find this pretty boring. Then again I´m not too found of Prince songs that goes in sticky directions (like grafittie bridge, the most beautiful girl..., his latest ballads). A song like creep needs the rougher sound or it´s just another boring track with millions of others during the pop-history. I hope he gets back to PASSION performing stuff like this in the future. This was too smooth in my opinion.

haha - after having another liss, it appears to me that a easylistening-version like this, really picks the song apart and show how bad this song really is. Now I know why it needs more noisy to sound good. wink

I remember reading when radiohead were starting out they supported tears for fears and they did a cover of creep but the lead singer changed the lyrics to Im so fucking special without a hint of sarcasm in his voice. I think it would have been great if prince had done that same version because he is so fucking special although I think it would have been seen as a definite dig at radiohead if he had done.

By the way to all the people on here saying Ive never heard radioheads music you should definitely check it out they are a brilliant band miserable you could argue, but they have took rock n roll further than any other band has to date if you look at there journey they stated out with pablo honey the album that has the track creep on it where they sounded like a student indie band with a hint of punk to where they are now which is well, hard to describe basically a mixture of a lot of different styles. Also with ok computer they created a era defining record which when I first heard it sounded like rock n roll from the future. Finally they are in no way anything like there shite wannabees coldplay.

Here are there albums to anybody wanting to give them a listen.

Pablo Honey
The Bends
Ok Computer
Kid A
Amnesiac
Hail to the theif
In Rainbows

My favourites I would recomend are The Bends, Ok computer, and hail to the theif.

"It is said Radiohead copied there meolody for Creep and had to hand over copywrite publishing to the Hollies.

"radiohead ripped off the chord progression from the hollies Air that I breath. At the end of the song, Thom Yorke sings the melody line from the Hollies song (during the “runnning out on me” part)
ultimately, the Hollies sued, won, and now share royalties on the song.

anyway, heres the hollies video

well spotted ufoclub but theres nothing new in ripping off old songs and making new ones out of them. Im sure if you wanted to you could find old songs that sound very familiar to prince ones. I remember reading that kurt cobain used to take melodies from different songs and put them together to make a new one.

yep there's nothing new about this: "the Hollies sued, won, and now share royalties on the song", but it does deflate my respect for Radiohead for that particular melody. Now, "Paranoid Android" on the other hand is... brilliant and original.
