Has anyone noticed this?

I went to Walmart & Target looking for PRINCE CDs and they both had NONE!
Wishful thinking is that they might have sold out, but what I noticed is that their CD selections have cut back big time. There's almost next to nothing for CDs anymore. Did anyone else notice this?

Actually you can thank Best Buy for this one. Best Buy takes the responsibility for out pricing Wal-Mart and Target to the point that it's no longer cost effective (in their eyes) to maintain partial catalogs for artists. Coupled with the implosion of the overall music business, the compact disc is going the way of the cassette tape & eight track tape. It's really a shame, the business model just needs to be retooled, not shot dead like a horse with a bad leg. disbelief

I've stopped looking for CDs at the store since there isn't any.
I decided just to buy it offline instead of wasting my time.

I have heard that under cover agent's from various rockard companies have purchased them on Prince's behalf and they are stored within the infamous "Vault."

It's a sad pitcure if that's the situation in the US... If Moscow was round the block you could go and stock up on Prince CDs there, he is omnipresent in all music stores. And in Western Europe too obviously. But my guess is that we'll have the same situation in Europe in a year or so. These trends ususally go eastwards and we get them with some delay from the US.

Not yet but soon, I've heard, I think it's set for this year. A story in the Moscow Times of March 27, 08 says "The top 10 players control only 12 percent of the market, and the entry of global giants such as Wal-Mart and Carrefour is likely to spur consolidation, analysts say." - but gives no date.

This reminds me of Starbucks - the first Starbucks opened in Moscow last year, after years of trying to enter the market. It caused such a stir!

They carried Planet Earth at the Wal-Mart in the small town where I work.

Since I usually buy vinyl, however, I don't bother with big box stores for music.
We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Those 2 barely deserve 2b called "wrecka stows" at all because their Prince collection is pretty pitiful.
The only ones I've seen them have is either Purple Rain, The Very best of... and Planet Earth (simply because its brand new).

I think, though, that my Wal-mart had one of the "Hits/B-sides" discs... and I bought Musicology from them.
Also bought PE at Target just to save a few bucks (compared to FYE, which charges 18.99 for a lot of new releases rolleyes ).

My advice: stick with places like FYE and Best Buy if you're looking for Prince music
had 2 run away... pride was 2 strong. It started raining, baby, the birds were gone

Nothing new.

This has been the case in Europe for more than 8 years. I hate it. I miss the nineties where recordstores were filled with Prince records, cd's, bootlegs etc. drool

But I hope that he's working very hard right now to give us a phonky new dish! Yummie.

The best, most well-stocked CD store in Moscow is called - of all names - 'Purple Legion' [no relation to P], that's where I stock up on Prince CDs.

While back home in Belgium, I saw PE at my local supermarket in January for a whopping 22 euros!! Well, I don't know how much it costs in the US and how pricing policies work, but still...
