nod Yeah, that was him reading all the nominees. Nowadays, most award shows have the presenter record a voice over for the nominees before they get on stage. His voice sounds LOVELY! cloud9

Prince won a Grammy for "Future Baby Mama?" Really?

he's over-qualified. its like putting a professional into an amateur talent contest.

in the real world, it wouldn't be allowed to happen, it'd be called "unfair" and the pro would be disqualified.

dont nobody take that the wrong way now.

Well, given his competition, you've got a point.

The same could be said of Herbie Hancock as well.

yes. i'm not sure what the grammy people are thinking by putting two different eras of musicians together in the same contest. doesnt seem fair on todays musicians.

when exceedingly more experienced musicians like prince win a category over the babes, its alot like a college graduate sitting for a primary school exam, passing with flying colours and walking out the room with a big gold star stuck on his forehead like " see i still got it " and everyone else who can see the clear light of day is thinking " do you realise what you just did and why did you feel the need? or at the very least, did you not think about this beforehand? or are you walking blindly through life completely unaware of the fact that you're already effing great and none of this should even matter to you anymore but guess what! it matters to THEM and you just crashed their party!? "

everybody cringes, the award snatcher moves on to another contest, this time kindergarten cuz their insecurity and/or blindness can never be cured, the same thing happens again, and people who are trying really hard to be great at what they do give up cuz of how small they are made to feel by the very stupid idea that its fair to have pro's and amateurs in the same competition.

this isnt an attack on prince either, its just another way of looking at it.

or maybe i'm just mensuratin and got this all wrong.

Well, the outstanding performance of the year is not limited to age. I will say this, though: this felt almost like a career-achievement thing for Prince because FBM ain't in a league with even some of his more recent stuff. Maybe also it was a signal to the newer cats that they need to step up their game.

when exceedingly more experienced musicians like prince win a category over the babes, its alot like a college graduate sitting for a primary school exam, passing with flying colours and walking out the room with a big gold star stuck on his forehead like " see i still got it " and everyone else who can see the clear light of day is thinking " do you realise what you just did and why did you feel the need? or at the very least, did you not think about this beforehand? or are you walking blindly through life completely unaware of the fact that you're already effing great and none of this should even matter to you anymore but guess what! it matters to THEM and you just crashed their party!? I agree that in some sense it's not fair to put an enormously talented pro in competition with less-experienced studio-driven acts. But at the same time, maybe the experience can teach them something. Think about who PRINCE was up against when he came out. Earth, Wind and Fire. Stevie Wonder. Michael Jackson (already a seasoned pro). Hell, Lionel Richie swept awards when Prince was up for them for Purple Rain. Don't you think that competitive environment made him a better artist?

I see what you're saying, but if these newer acts fold, then they weren't meant to be great anyway.

this isnt an attack on prince either, its just another way of looking at it.

I see what you're saying, but you know as well as I do that sometimes the greatest pros win awards they have no business winning. Like say, when Al Pacino won his first Best Actor Oscar for "Hoo-Hah!"-ing in a flick for 2 hours, over Denzel Washington's tour de force in Malcolm X.

in my opinion, honesty makes a better artist. getting trounced by people much better than you makes an insecure artist. you just KNOW they're whispering behind the curtain " you didnt think we'd give that upstart an award now do you? this is our club, not his. "

:::: look what happened to Prince, so much of his career has been driven by him purposely trying to impress others and being untrue to himself in the process.

his early stuff was his best stuff because it was pure. the industry hadnt messed with his head yet.

young artists need love and encouragement, not competitions which, can dent an artists deepest sensitivities. it either takes them a long time to recover, or they step up, suck it up, and make more 'suitable' music at the same time as loosing the innocence which makes them so great to begin with... and then you have the wonderful genre of dishonest commercial music.

and the award goes to Justin Timberlake.
