Rick James vs. Prince (book -- "The Confessions of Rick James"

Folks,

Rick James has an amusing Prince anecdote in his book, "The Confessions of Rick James: Memoirs of A Super Freak". It details the origins of their rivalry and other juicy details. Hint: it began when Rick James invited Prince to be his opening act during the FIRE IT UP tour.

There's an article on this anecdote at http://www.thewowjonesreport.com

Check it out when you can.

I still think Teena Marie and Jill Jones should co-author a book about those days.

Sounds plausible to me. Everybody has to learn how to perform and I can imagine Prince seeing a cat like Rick and realizing he really had to step up his game. Of course this account doesn't mention where Rick learned it from. James Brown and others were doing this shit long before Rick so I doubt he originated much.

Rick got a lot of stuff from JB and other R&B performers that came before him.
The book is a good read but, Rick was so jealous of Prince it is kind of sad.

He could have put that energy into his own music.

I should pick this up. Rick's life was so crazy and this part with Prince just adds on to it.

First of all, Rick didn't even play the Bass lines on his own records.

Secondly, I'd bet it went down something like this:

Prince probably kicked Rick's ass on the drums, if that ever even happened. Rick probably fronted like he was better.

Prince, probably sensing that Rick had a problem with him, set out 2 show him that he could do whatever Rick was doing, and that's why he was mimicking some of his moves, if he was at all.

If one looks at Prince's stage performing, he is very original, with some noticeable influences. I've seen Rick perform. Prince didn't get anything from him. U wanna talk about James Brown? Fine.

Funny, I don't remember Rick jumping off pianos, landing in a split, and getting back 2 the mic just in time.

Rick was never as dynamic nor athletic as Prince ever.

I agree about Jill and Teena. That book would be hellified. I've had Rick's book for quite some time now and I do think it's a good read. I credit Rick for being honest about his jealousy of P. I was surprised to read Rick cop to that.

Oh I'm sure there was jealousy, especially with a younger kid moving in on his turf, but I'm sure there was a kernel of truth to the story of Prince aping James's moves before his own set, which is funny as hell anyway.

Thanks. I admit the article is very interesting. Kinda makes you think. I knew Rick James didn't like Prince. Just watch the extended interview of Rick James response to Charlie Murphy's true hollywood stories on Season 2 DVD of Dave Chappelle.

Ya know I really wished Rick and Teena Marie would take on Jill (instead of she was under Prince who screwed her in the process) as a mentor and to this day I still don't understand why she didn't went to them as much as she was close to them especially Teena Marie. Unless she feared of pissed Prince off. She had the voice and looks too and she would done well had she been guidence under them . Too bad.

Rick's Levi was his keyboard player & background singer, Levi Ruffin.

I'm not too sure, but I think Levi is David Ruffin from the Temptations' nephew.

it's too bad the book is so cheaply made. While I have a preview copy there really isn't any excuse for the way the Rick James book is presented. From the typesetting to the cheap black/white photos spread throughout the book, it simply screams amateur.

Yeah, Rick sure should have. Not for nothing, in the book Rick basically cops to his jealousy of Prince's career--mainly how HUGE Prince had gotten. The sales, the movies, etc...

there are a couple of references to prince in the rick james book. However, the excerpt posted in the wow jones report is a big one. there are many funny stories not included though. Including but not limited too how Rick James got his REVENGE on Prince for Prince's repertoire-biting, the time Rick James chased Prince throughout a party when Prince ran away in terror from Rick's mom upon meeting her, etc...
