A New Movie: Now is the Time

Prince could use the marketing momentum from his current tour, the Chevy commercial, and the props he's getting from popular artists to put out some feelers to Showtime or another cable movie company and get a film in the works for 2003.

A new movie would be a great project for him to work on in 2003. The time would be right because it would give him a perfect opportunity to get his new mature image and music out to the public at a time when Warner Bros. is probably going to be doing something with the 20th anniversary of Purple Rain.

Instead of sitting at Paisley and hiding until the Purple Rain hype dies down, as he did when Warners released the Very Best of Prince, Prince could get a deal going to get his own movie done. He would be the star of the movie and he would do the music but someone else would write and direct the production. It would not be a movie for theaters, but a cable TV release would work great.

You're right. It's been over 10 years since his last film. As long as its done professionally, with skilled writers, a director, and producer it would work well. Prince would be the star and create the music. The film could have a night club setting. Many of the scenes could be filmed at the Paisley Park soundstage, which would bring in additional revenue.

Yes, I agree a movie right now would be an excellent idea.

I totally agree with you. Every now and then it's great to see someone do something different and it would be great to see Prince do another movie or something that isn't music related.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

How long's it been since you've seen a really bad movie? Hopefully, Prince has learned what Madonna hasn't figured out. Stick to music. It's what you do best.

Mariah Carey's backers thought it was the right time a while back to release "Glitter"...

A concert movie should be the only thing that Prince put's any effort into, film-wise.
If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

Here are a few script ideas, some of which I may have already mentioned on previous threads...

***A "prequel" to 'Purple Rain'
***A film where Prince plays a blues musician
***A film where Prince plays the CEO of a hip record label who falls in love with a young singer who REFUSES to sign with his label. It's a romantic comedy where he tries to win her affection.
***A film about a 70s funk band with Prince as the leader
***A film about Jimi Hendrix

His new image as a serious musician with music as the most important part of him instead of his clothes, hair, dancing and humping around. smile

Two of these sound good to me: The romantic comedy with Prince as the CEO of a record label or the one with Prince as the leader of a 70s funk band.

Both of these ideas offer a lot of opportunities for live club or concert scenes. These ideas also have a lot of potential for guest star appearances from artists and performers who are currently hot on the charts. This would make the movie even more "bankable" to Showtime, MTV, or another cable network that does movies.

I swear I was thinking about that b4 I type, great minds think alike wink.

But I was thinking about a CEO of a hip INDIE record label who got laughed at in the begining but at the end he proved 'em wrong.

And BTW you guys, I got 2 words 4 ya'll "SPIKE LEE" nuff said.

Screw a movie, how about an album?

By the way, a Purple Rain 20th anniversary would be excellent, but let's wake up and smell the flowers...IT'S NOT GOING TO HAPPEN.

WB + Prince = deal = AIN'T GONNA HAPPEN

But that is part of the point. WB can release a 20th anniversary Purple Rain movie and album without any input from Prince, just like they did with the Very Best of Prince.

If Prince would get a deal with Showtime or whoever going for a movie/soundtrack project in 2003, it could be released in 2004.

WB will be selling Prince's old image to the public through the Purple Rain anniversary releases.

WB will be selling the old Prince, while Prince can have his new image, new movie and new music out there in 2004.

Okay I'm NOT saying this should be done BUT one obvious route would be:

The 'real' sequel to Purple Rain (ie not graffiti bridge).

Premise:

The Kid is now in his 40s. During the time that has elapsed since the Revolution's First Avenue performance he has become a big star. However he is trapped by a restrictive contract that dictates what he can and cannot do. He decides to try and do his own thing and nurture some fresh young talent. In the meantime he also has to deal with the betrayal of the woman he loves and the eventual discovery of someone new who teaches him to trust again.

By doing this he could cash in on anything happening to promote a possible 20th anniversary of Purple Rain?
'I loved him then, I love him now and will love him eternally. He's with our son now.' Mayte 21st April 2016 = the saddest quote I have ever read! RIP Prince and thanks for everything.

I might be wrong but I don't think they can. I think the greatest hits cd was the last one he was under contract for. If there are changes to Purple Rain the movie and the cd I have a feeling they would have to have his input. IF they don't have to have his input for a re-release of the movie I do think they have to have it for a re-release of Purple Rain the album with any sort of changes for a 20th anniversary.

I dunno about the movie, but doesn't WB own the masters to the Purple Rain album and B Side songs? They could release a remastered Purple Rain with extended versions of songs and songs that didn't make the album.

I do believe that they only own pre-existing Prince material, that was released. This means things like extended versions of Purple Rain songs, that were previously unreleased have to get Prince's approval.

I would venture to guess this means unreleased portions of the movie Purple Rain footage...
