Umm...quarter means divided into fourths. You don't have to be into football to know that--a quarter past means 1/4 of an hour...a quarter piece of pie means 1/4. I mean, I know y'all use the metric system but c'mon.

falloff

yeah, sometimes some things are so obvious you cant even see them, but the fact the show is called the half time show, would be enough to get me confused, in ice hockey they use thirds or not????

Naw ya, was Petty any good?

and why does that stadium have a roof?

wink

Basic Fractions: Lesson 2

Two-fourths (2/4) = One-half (1/2), thus after two quarters of play comes half time.

Yes, hockey is played in 3 sections, but they’re called periods--not thirds. lol

No idea why the stadium has a roof...

The roof is retractable. It was open earlier today but they closed it because there was a 50% chance of rain. I guess they didn't want a replay of last year's monsoon. Could you imagine Tom Petty trying to perform in the hurricane Prince did last year??? LOL! Maybe we would have sensed he had a pulse! Last year was the first time in 41 years that a Superbowl was played in rain.

Alicia Keys wasnt that great, I've seen her perform much better than that, it didnt help that she lip synced the entire performance.

Jordin Sparks too, since when do we lip sync the national anthem?

and oh yes, go Giants, NY rules! Now if the Knicks can get it together, this would be a good year in sports! lol

I think it's a requirement for any city to get a Superbowl. Which is why all new professional arenas are domes or have a retractable roof. They make an exception for California and Florida because it NEVER rains there in February. . . Until last year that is. LOL! lol I've heard this explanation several times because Dallas is in the process of building a new arena and when they were trying to get the money from the city they kept saying that the retractable roof was crucial to getting a Superbowl here. Which we got for the year 2012. And yes he did design it.

yeah a few dates have been suggested varying from march right up to november but no one knows all that is known is michael is in talks to do shows there but is also looking at a few other venues (from raymone) and that someone asked the security guy who was the main one around the indigo when prince was playing there who said he had been asked whether security would be possible if michael was to do a prolonged stay like prince did but he wasnt ment to be telling anyone and that the person he told wasnt to repeat it...as if that would happen lol so hopefully the london might be getting something soon biggrin

as much as i enjoyed michaels 1/2 time show it does always make me think its just another performance of the dangerous tour neutral though i would have loved to see the peoples faces when they are told what michael wanted 'yeah he wants a blow up world, 1000's of pieces of paper to make pictures and a wand that sprays out sparks, oh yeah and a few look alikes to jump out above the screens' lol

Prince still remains the best superbowl 1/2 time show i have seen biggrin

well lots of us in the UK all love 80's music and not just by Prince - one of the best eras for music full stop and sometimes you have to give people what they want.... biggrin

i agree that the 80's was the last decade of true music but doesn't mean that all current music sucks. and especially in prince's case that is so not true. his music in the 90's and up until 2006 has also been great.
man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

I LOVE U2 and yes the performance was moving but THAT was because of the September 11 tragedy so they had a lot of extra emotion and patriotism working for them. That was an extraordinary circumstance and by no means a normal Superbowl. However, IMO if we base it solely on sheer excitement, fun, and thrills, which is what the halftime show is supposed to be about, Prince is STILL and "always will be (pussy control)" err I mean number 1 wink lol and MJ is in the top 5.

U2 were incredible at the superbowl, Where the streets have no names, is one of my fav songs of all time, especially live. I remember when I saw the superbowl version, I was totally confused as to how they managed to get a stage and all those people out on the field in such a short space of time, I actually thought it was some sort of broadcast from a concert. I personally would not be able to put one show over the other. P´s performance was definitely hampered by the weather conditions, which added a certain flare to the show. To be fair, not many would have delivered such a captiviting show in such conditions.

Has Springsteen ever did the halftime superbowl show?
If it were not for insanity, I would be sane.

Bruce Springsteen, I'm not sure if he has, but I think it's about time they invite him back.

I mean, they've been ranking him with Prince and Bob Dylan... he's gotta be worth something... but in all seriousness, that would be nice if they got him. Because he's probably my dad's favorite [male] artist and he grew up and/or currently lives close to where my dad grew up in NJ.

A few friends and I were talking in the chatroom about this before it was announced. But we were thinking that they were going to get Bob Dylan this year and we got each other all excited about the idea, only to find the act had already been chosen.

I think in my 11 years of football, I've only seen 8 SuperBowls... I don't remember U2 AT ALL, which means I probably missed them... otherwise I would have remembered them making some kind of impact (good/bad is up for debate, they're kinda like a thorn in my side).

L4OATheOriginal said:

I couldn't agree more. 80's music was the last decade of true music... it just started going downhill from there when they started scouting for talent and putting groups together with contracts and songs already written. Pretty much taking out of music what its about: soul [and not just soul music, but all music written from the heart has a soul].

Originally, I thought they started going with the older acts to play it safe because of the "incident" [I still can't get over that was one of the SuperBowls I missed pissed ]... and that is true. And for the longest time, I couldn't really relate to any of the artists they put out. Conversely, the state of music from the past few years isn't all that great either. So it's better to have the seasoned/experienced acts than ones that aren't even about the music.

The fact that they picked Prince last year really says a lot about what people think of him. They rank him as one of the greats of all time. He had to follow The Rolling Stones, which are overly popular (not with me, though confused )... in my mind, they couldn't have picked a better choice because the HalfTime show really is about pizzaz (if that's how u spell it)... why not pick an artist who always puts on one helluva show but has music that also gets the crowd involved? [Don't believe me, listen to the crowd carrying the "sing-along chorus" of Purple Rain].

I think the successfulness of a show also can be attributed to the record sales immediatley following. Tom Petty was good, but I'm not about to go to my local wrecka stow and get a bunch of his music the way I did with Prince. That's just me, though shrug A good HalfTime will almost always increase public interest in an artist. nod

I agree totally. It also translates into ticket sales. Tom Petty mighta looked like a corpse but he ain't stupid. He's embarking on a major tour and I believe the tickets go on sale this week even though the shows are like 6 months away. LOL! As for Prince, the tickets to 3121 in Vegas sold much faster after the Superbowl. The down side is that there were a lot more casual, drunk ass fans after the Superbowl than before. The vibe was definitely less intimate after, but still great compared to an arena.

Last night was good, but last year's was just as historic. First time there was a black coach, let alone two, in the big game, plus the rain, that was a first too. And it was in Miami, which is obviously P's kinda town. I loved that his suits were in the colors of the University of Miami and Dolphins colors. He pimped out that Superbowl in Miami! pimp Somehow, Glendale Arizona doesn't seem as glamarous and lacks flava. lol

I know this is probably abit off topic, but there is some great debate going on about live performances. To those of you that have not seen U2 live, next time they are in location near to you, make sure to get a ticket, they will blow you mind. I first saw U2 in 87, it was the last show of the Joshua Tree tour, and it was in my hometown, Cork. At the time I was totally anti-U2, basically coz everyone was into them, there would be major arguements and discussions about Joshua Tree Versus SOTT. This even prompted one of P´s most famous quote´s after the grammy awards, where U2 had just taken the award for best album, P´s reply was to say, "OK, I can do that, but U2 cant do the Housequake" . In 95 P put U2 lead singer Bono to the test, at an aftershow in Dublin, they sang The Cross together, which of course was the song which P had made reference to back at the grammy awards. I have heard the version they did, Bono kept forgetting the lyrics lol

Anyway, in 87, after the dissappointment of SOTT london show´s being cancelled, I went to the U2 concert, I was expecting it to be similiar to basically listening to U2´s music on a loud stereo, but boy was I wrong, from the moment they came on stage, it was a total party, one of the best show´s I was ever at. I have since seen them two more times, 2001 & 2005, both in Vienna. Again, I have never witnessed any band that can get an audience into such a frenzy. I have seen alot of concerts in Vienna, including Springsteen and The Stones, and an Austrian audience is very difficult to get on their feet, but both times U2 had the place jumping from start to finish. The 2005 concert was extra special, as it was on the same day that Live 8 was done, and the show started late, as U2 had to fly in from London.

If I was to look at it from a neutral perspective, U2 are probably the best live act in the world, they sure know how to get people into a complete frenzy. BTW, U2 3D is probably at a cinema near you, from what I have heard, it is almost as good as the real thing wink

my apologies for Hi-jacking the thread lol
If it were not for insanity, I would be sane.
