Just because she went to a wedding in a church doesn't mean she strayed. JW's make many decisions based on their conscience regarding something that's not straight forwardly forbidden in the Bible.

There is no example or suggestion in the Bible that says you cannot attend a non-JW's wedding in a church. Most JW's wouldn't go because #1, their own conscience may just not feel right about it and #2, it could stumble someone else such as a JW who might think it's wrong or someone that's not a JW and might see that as wrong too. Just like people here are calling it hypocritical when it's not just because another JW wouldn't do it.

We don't know all the details about Prince being at that party. Has it occurred to anyone that maybe he didn't know it was an actual birthday party? I don't know if that's the case but neither does anyone else here know that he did. Maybe he got there and realizing it was a birthday party he went up to another area where the festivities were not taking place. As another poster mentioned, maybe he really needed to see someone there. The fact he purposely went out of his way to not mingle shows he was not there in support of a birthday. Being in the same building where a bd party is not in itself wrong. I know many a JW's that gladly accept and eat left over birthday cake if a workmate brings it to work the next day. Some may not do it. It's not part of the celebration. It's up to someone's conscience.

there's just so many things we don't know the details too, being rude about his beliefs without knowing all the details is really lowclass.

Prince didn't possbily know it was a BD party? Just like he didn't know he was attending a Maxim party a few years back? Riiiigght.

Being rude about other people's beliefs are just as lowclass and dude has made many PUBLIC remarks that were disrespectful to people of other faiths. He could have very well kept his religious affiliation under wraps but he did not and if he chooses to call someone out on something, he should be prepared to get call on stuff back.

Many of the Witnesses I know personally would not indulge in such a party, birthday or not.

-----
Sorry but all Christians are suppose to witness to people. I don't think it is offensive if you do it the right way. I don't think JW's go about it the right way but I don't get offended if anyone of another religion tries to talk to me about it. They have their beliefs and I have mind and adults should be able to talk with out having a mental break down.

So it'd be cool with you if an Atheist for example wanted to converse with you about his/her beliefs? As an adult you would be able to handle that without having a mental breakdown, right? That's really open minded of you. I'm impressed.

Come on, we're all hypocrites, someone a little more, someone a little less. It's his preaching and his fame that bring his hypocrisy to the fore. Damn, I'm glad my actions aren't covered by the media or I would be swimming in dog poo...

I never said I wasn't guilty of ever being a hypocrite myself, that's for sure. lol Just pointing out that he tends to act this way a lot. And yeah, you said it, it's the preaching thing that really gets to me.

lol

That man knew it was Benny's BD. He went to the vip...to mingle with mariah and the likes. He didn't want to mingle with soulja boy and Gucci man.

Its ok if Prince said that he was going to celebrate. Its ok to say that he's still a JW that doesn't buy into this part of the religion but lets not try to act like he didn't know there was a BIRTHDAY party going on.

Benny Medina has a long history with Warner Brothers... I think he left Motown and joined WB in the mid '80s. I think he and Prince have always been tight.

What most folks don't know, is that "The Fresh Prince of Bel Aire" was based on Benny's life... although he came from the ghettos of East L.A.

Yeah, he was attempting to slob Marierz and getting shut down by Brat.

One of my best friends is agnostic and I know a few atheists. This is America and people are free to worship as they please or not worship. If I think someone is interested in Christianity, I would invite him or her to my church. I would not try to ram my religion down there throat. If they come check my church out great if they do not that is fine to. We all have to make up our own minds.

Apparently, P did say in an interview that he was not all Star Trek about it so I gather he is not running around witnessing 24/7. I do not know too many Christians who do.

Prince has worked and been friends with Benny for many years, heck Prince celebrated and had fun at many a birthday party himself.
It would be stupid as hell if he diddnt "get it" that it be cool to wish your friend well on his birthaday, regardless of his new relgious dogma.

LOL! I bet you could find an excuse for him, if he pulled an OJ and was caught red handed, with the bloody knife, wearing both gloves and saying he did it, couldn't you? lol

Whatever his reason for being there though, in my opinion, it still doesn't look right. shrug

I can understand playing a gig at a bd party, cause it's a job. Just like if a JW was working in a supermarket and the store sells cigarettes, it would be ridiculous to say, "I can't sell you cigs because I'm against people smoking". But this... sigh

That's a matter between him and God and would be on his conscience. I guess he knows what his reasons were (I want to think the best).

Right! It doesn't look right! I love my mother to death..but when my relatives had a big 60th birthday party for her..I didn't attend. She know I love her and she understood! I tried to look at this from all different angles. Even if he was there for business it still looks bad...he could do that somewhere else!
I know that I don't know all the details but if he was there for business they could talk after the party somewhere else! I'm not trying to judge my brother..
I just think he is slippin! We all slip from time to time maybe not like this but some other fashion. That is why we ask Jehovah for forgiveness daily and try not to make the same mistakes!

the problem is not that he went to the birthday party. we all know Christians, including many of ourselves, who don't follow the rules that strictly, none of us are perfect and in the end its between that person and God. I think the problem, if it is even a problem, is that by Prince not being private about his beliefs, when he appears to break the rules in public, folks are gonna jump all over it.

Puleese JW's aren't any different from any other religion where this type of this is concerned. I worked with a woman who was a Witness and did not participate in any office holiday celebrations but did expect and accept the holiday monetary bonus that was given to employees. lol

As far as I can see this is no different than other Christians talking about being saved and so on and being "good Christians" and following their particular sects teachings, but still have sex out of wedlock and so on. lol

Despite how the situation looks, this is not a serious sin. He made a mistake, which after some thinking, he may realize that he made a mistake. I still have confidence that he is trying his best, after all, aren't we all imperfect as well and prone do make mistakes and misjudge at times?

I'm not excusing anything, but I try to remember that if I make a mistake, I am human too, and so is he. So, I'll just trust that he is capable of making his own decisions and live up to consequences if need be.

I'm not going to go to the point of judging and condemning him, I'm nobody to do that.

SOSGEMINI is merely making a statement of fact, NOT one that is 'judgemental' in nature.

Jehovah's Witnesses who are baptized are simply forbidden to celebrate birthdays (either their own or others) or attend birthday parties. This is so serious they can be excommunicated for it.

It is not a question of making a 'mistake' or being 'judgmental'. This is the equivalent of a Jewish person eating pork. For a person of that faith it is out of the question.

All SosGemini and others are attempting to do is make those not knowledgable about JW's aware of that fact.

i don't want to get too deep in this religion, i really care not to offend anyone...i just wanted to ask could it be that Prince like many Christians just does not follow or buy into all the rules. Perhaps after studying he made up his mind on certain aspects of it..or is there no such thing with JW. Like I said, I don't want to offend anyone, but I see often with other religions and I personally don't know of any JW so I ask.

The religion of Jehovah's Witnesses is much more commited and strict than most.

If a JW decides not to 'buy into' or 'follow' all the rules then they are Disfellowshipped (excommunicated) which means they are not a Jehovah's Witness at all.

Only active JW's are considered to be Jehovah's Witnesses officially and if any person is Disfellowshipped that person may not be communicated with by other JW's or talk to other active JW's himself. If he/she attends a meeting he/she must sit (most commonly at the back) in the Kingdom Hall without communicating with others or participating in any way. Reinstatement is possible with time and at the Elders discretion if that person is considered to have decided to commit himself fully.

I agree that Prince may have selected certain parts of JW teaching and assimilated them, but if he has done this, ultimately he is not a genuine JW.

Of course, this is Prince's business, but attending Birthday parties and/or celebrating Christmas or violating other principles repatedly would put him in the position outlined above.
