Yes, this has been known for many months now.

And NO, this doesn't mean that remasters are in the works at all.
It's simply a change in distribution, nothing more unfortunately.

So where would one purchase a Prince Album once they are gone from the record store? Could it just be no more online purchasing of his work?

They should be back in the record stores before all the stocks run out.

Don't fool yourselves into thinking this means remasters, because it does not. They'll likely be put out in digi-packs and that's it.

Prince refused to allow Erotic City on the Ultimate Collection because of his JW beliefs and has put a stop to any serious remaster talk because all those WB albums contain songs he now considers sinful.

As long as he's a JW, Prince will not be releasing anything beyond a compilation or limited box of remasters. You'll never get Dirty Mind, 1999, Controversy, etc remastered, let alone outtakes and b-sides from the era.

I beg to differ on this. I doubt Prince would ever let his back catalog shrivel up like that. All revert to digi-packs? That makes no sense as they cost more to produce.

I don't know if they'll be digi-packs but outside of a change in packaging standards, Prince simply won't allow remasters of his 'dirty' material. As I've previously noted, it's the explicit reason Erotic City had to be pulled from the Ultimate Collection, I don't care if he played a snippet of it in London or not.

I have no idea on what or how his old albums will continue to be distributed, but I do know due to his beliefs, he is 100% against re-releasing old material that doesn't match up with his current worldview. Which again means, no Dirty Mind, no 1999, etc. In other words, nothing of his when he was actually relevant will get the audio treatment it deserves.

And while it's nothing but a hunch, don't be surprised if Prince wouldn't be content with letting some of his earlier work fade away.

Bank on it: no remastered albums.

No hard feelings.
