i felt spoilt 4 choice in the 80's! there were some great tunes about & i was a tweenager & didn't view prince stuff as exceptional... but realised he had something special with SOTT.
of course he's the only artist from the 80's thts still kicking ass. he's aged better 2 wink

If you look at the American pop charts. The Billboard Hot 100 charts. At the end of the decade Michael Jackson was the #1 artist with Prince coming in at #2. If you look at the Billboard R&B charts, Prince was the #1 artist of the decade. This information is from the Joel Whitburn Top Pop 1955-2007 book and the Joel Whitburn Top R&B hits book.
Making love and music are the only things worth fighting for.

You little bitches turned this into Prince vs MJ for no reason! How dare you shit on a serious thread like that? I never intended to create an MJ vs Prince thread! We're discussing music here and I requested for you to back up any disagreement with my statement with full blow facts! You MJ addicts have failed to do that and literally all I hear is "MJ I wann blow your quarter inch banana."

So far we had no valuable post disagreeing with my initial post. However, we did have intelligent posts backing up what I said.

Oh, and Madonna? Hahaha. That bitch can't sing, she doesn't play any instruments, she barely writes lyrics, she can't dance, so how is she musical? She had an image, she was hot, she was provocative, and she moved units. She Was never musical!

MJ is dope, no doubt about it. But he really only has 2 albums to his name, as I already mentioned before. Off The Wall and Thriller are all you need in you CD collection. He had other good songs on other albums, but collectively all his others efforts came short.

But NOBODY, NO FUCKIN BODY, dances like MJ. Best dencer EVER! That's a given.

I think the reason your thread devolved into Prince vs. MJ is mostly your fault. You claimed Prince was "bigger" in the 80's than everyone else. Yes, you said "musically", but that term didn't clarify the intent of your post. All it meant is that you didn't mean something like "cinematically". Point being--it was vague.

By saying "Nobody was bigger.." it inherently brings up the idea of record sales, awards, chart positions etc. People will take exeption to this because MJ had Prince licked when it comes to these areas in the 80's. Perhaps you should have said "better" more innovative, more sexy, or something instead of "bigger".

how the hell did he steal it? if prince had bought it that catalouge he would have given it right back 2 it's rightful artist, the actual song writers and per4mers not some kook that not only bought sly's but the beatles catalouge. he shouldn't have gotten mad that he has no songwritting skills. if there was no quincy or rod temperton, michael would just b a has been singer from a famous kid band

Of course he bloody clarified it - and I re-clarified it for you and everyone else with my first post. It said "nobody was bigger MUSICALLY" - how much more precise can it get? "Bigger" inherently covers a much larger scope than "better" - the latter would imply just skills, musicianship, whereas the former can include a range of things including styles covered etc.

The fault lies not with the kick drum or the saxophone but the dumbasses who seem to have a problem comprehending plain English and most the MJites who constantly bring it back to record sales. 2 MJ fans did that early on, even though there had been posts that had perfectly understood the thread and it basically descended from there..... neutral

80s had the hairbands, the cheesy synth bands, and the awful boybands but they also gave birth to great post-punk bands, r&b artists, and electronic bands whose influence is still felt today.

Pop music was important in the 80s and it clearly defined the era of insane excess.

However, musically, I don't think ANY artist accomplished as much as Prince. He kept his street cred, fused so many different styles of music, made a hit movie, and defined the role of a producer/musician to the fullest.

With that said, I don't think any band/artist matches up to him in the 80s. MJ is a different breed of an artist and he's first an entertainer, then a musician. But even if we don't look at it that way, he only released two classics, Off The Wall and Thriller. Metallica were dope in the 80s, but their music didn't influence as many people as Prince's music has. I can say that The Cure and The Smiths had incredible music as well, but their depression only appealed to certain audiences. Prince had everyone rocking out to his music and he had every critic eating out of his hand. Depeche Mode was dope in this era too and so was Kate Bush, but they come short I believe. Hip-hop had Eric B & Rakim, Grandmaster Flash, BDP, and others, but this was still a baby genre.

Dirty Mind, 1999, Purple Rain, Around The World In A Day, Parade, Sign 'o' the Times and Lovesexy. What a fuckin' run! I'll even include the self-titled album in this as well, because I Wanna Be Your Lover, Sexy Dancer, Bambi and I Feel For You are still larger than life.

Prince appealed to the hipsters, those who loved the night life, gays, straight people, black, white, Asian, Latino, men, women, kids, and every critic and musician on planet Earth!

80's were singlehandedly dominated by Prince and if you don't think so, please explain yourself!

Michael Jackson is said to be the artist of that time by most people because that was indeed the case! I witnessed that whole era....evey which way you turned it was just Michael, Michael, Michael! He was the top male artist of that time to Madonna as the female top artist. Both these two were talked about and dissected like no other.

With that said, prince WAS NOT the top 80's male artist.

Don't agree at all. It was Michael if u are talking about MTV or winning awards. If u are talking about MUSIC, it was Prince hands down. Mj released 2 maybe 3 projects during the 80's. Prince released 2/3 projects a year in the 80's.

No doubt that Michael Jackson was the "Biggest"(most popular)thing then ...BUT,Prince was the baddest, coolest, most creative & versatile & he didnt take the easy route by being too commercial(MJ).& he was the most hated & not PG like all the others(ruling out a massive potential fanbase). He was up against all odds!!!He took chances, defied conventional wisdom, gambled, challenged himself and kicked ass in the process."kiss"no bassline! "If i was your girlfriend"who else would've touched that song? "when doves cry"a song with only 3 instruments playing but funky like a septic tank! Who else on earth does rock,funk,gospel,r&b...play all instruments in each style better than many artiste who master just one???? Now tell something about MJ other than marketing !

IM WITH U BROTHER MJ WAS ALOAD OF OLD CATS BOLLOCKS!!!

You miss my point. I am simply saying that the title of the thread alone is a bit misleading and will bait any MJ supporters into a riled up argumentative state.

Sure, you can assume that everyone but you is stupid, but there is a chance that the clarification (and your re-clarification) simply wasn't enough to solve the problem of an ill titled/misleading post. Why not just change the title of the post and not have to explain and re explain the original intent idea?

Listen, I agree that nobody could touch Prince musically in the 80's--I would argue that no one could touch him musically now. However, I still don't know how anyone is going to "prove" or "disprove" that Prince was the "biggest
musically" in the 80's.

I agree that it is Prince that is/was the most musically talented and proficient, had the most impact, who did the most with music..but I ask again: How do you prove that? How do you make an opinion a fact?

I agree with skywalker on this.

And btw, MJ fans bringing up record sales is as irritating as Prince fans brining up the number of instruments he plays as if he is a virtuoso on the level of Kissin.

Just playing devil's advocate here, but what about Kate Bush? Even P himself was directly inspired by Hounds Of Love, and she also wrote and produced her own albums, set her own standards, and was a great writer to boot. Probably the only major artist who could seriously be considered a rival in strictly musical terms. I love Springsteen for instance, but musically his stuff was always just straightforward rock.

I agree the word "bigger" was misleading, but apart from the MJ fans, no-one else had a problem understanding what he meant. I think it was pretty clear.

I agree, but to be honest the 80s weren't all that though... biggrin

There was a lot wrong with the 80s, but at least you still had great melodies out there. That's the one thing I miss the most in today's music. You also had Cyndi Lauper, so that alone makes the decade worthwhile. biggrin
