hmm

I like the song selection--a few classics and a few more obscure choices. I'm skeptical though--in general, covers of Prince songs suck.

Also,

    1. Who are these bands? I've never heard of any of them except D'Angelo. What kind of music do they generally do?

    2. Do they need Prince and/or WB's permission to do this? Especially for The Future, since it's from Batman? (I'm guessing they won't be sampling movie soundbites like P. did.)

Sexy Dancer - 7 Hurtz & Peaches

this was already released on the "if i was prince" tribute comp a few years back. not a super great track, but one of the best tracks on that compilation.

Is this real?
I watched the Paul Simon Tribute last night and thought Prince should have some of his older songs covered on a CD and perhaps, later, in some sort of tribute. Probably not like the Controversy Tribute CD, though.

not to worry...the peaches "sexy dancer" cover isn't a strict cover...it just kinda riffs on it. the track is more of a goofy tribute to prince than anything.

not really what I call a tribute album.
just a bunch of Prince covers released before, spread over a couple of years.

Rather would want to see a supervised project with newly recorded covers and a vision than picking these miscellaneous recordings.

Right. It makes it feel like something of this magnitude (it could be, and should be big) wasn't even worth the effort. It lessens the impact and even cheapens the potential. But maybe it will be good.

I'd rather hear lesser known, but good, songs covered by more well known artists. "Crazy You" you would stay but someone else would have to do it.

I used to think that about Sign o The times until Chaka COvered it. I'd be pissed if someone ever did Housequake though!

That's pretty strange cuz at least D'Angelo's and 7 Hurtz & Peaches's r old songs, released years ago. Could it b a compilation of already released covers?

These 2 tracks r ok but i'd listen 2 it b4 beuying it: all these compilations of Prince covers generally end up being very disappointing...

???? Do you think it's supposed to be Crucial?

All I know is I have a couple of tribute cds and I always end up laughing at them.

There are maybe 2-3 ok covers but otherwise they are BAD!!!!!

And, why would I want to hear anyone else do Purple Rain?

I don't know if you like punk, but the Teddybears do a wonderfully thrashy cover of Purple Rain on the punk tribute CD "Purple Pain".
