Yes... and Prince ain't hardcore funk

To be honest, Prince has created some of the hardest, and most direct funktracks in history.

The people who brag about discofied funk like Kool and the Gang and Rick James mistake some nostalgic 'idea' about hardcore funk with reality.

Hardcore funk is not some 'cool-ism', its about funk hitting really hard musicwise, not smoothed or polished down like so many Earth, Wind and Fire-songs or songs by the Ohio Players.

Its the line that goes from James Brown earliest funk tracks, to the more left-field songs of Sly Stone, to the most Pure-funk songs of Parliament, into the most uncompromising funk-jams of Prince.

I don't like my funk 'washed down' with disco, plastic R&B and smooth soul, it just kills the directness and urgency of the music. In that sense i consider bands like The Urban Dance squad and Rage against the machine as artists who keep the appreciation for hard funk alive.

Interesting to see Rage against the machine pop up here, it is something I have always thought about their music, but i was never really sure if my assumption was right, add to the fact that most Rage fans I know what have laughed me out of the room if i mentioned this to them.

And to add to the list

All Day, All Night - naturally Princes version cool
If it were not for insanity, I would be sane.

Well, most of RATM's music (especially on their brilliant debutalbum) is 'just' pure funk played with a rock-venom.

The beats and grooves are plain funk, but there is probably to much "guitar" in the music for old-school funkateers to realise that.

I said it before, selfacclaimed "funkateers" are conservatives, who often dont recognize real funk when its there.

Most of these so called "funk-lovers" are stuck in the seventies and early eighties, listening to discofied soft-funk like Earth, Wind and Fire or thinking that Cameo is funk-rock, when that band uses a hard-rock guitar once in a while.

These conservatives are fooling themselves: songs like Freedom by RATM, Grand Black Citizen by Urban Dance Squad or Whats my favourite colour by Living Colour, are a continuation of the JB - Sly - Clinton - Prince-line, but those conservatives are to blind to see, just because the music might sound a bit too 'rockish' or 'alternative' on the surface for them.

yeah, you have some excellent points there especially regarding hardcore funk in musical terms, but it was something that attracted me to their music. I remember one time a friend of mine putting a video of them on, turning the volume down and basically playing the music on an acoustic guitar, i sat there gob smacked. although i had two of their albums already, this guy simply explained to me what was going on with these songs, especially the guitar work, which is to this day very un-appreciated coz RATM got labelled as a hardcore alternative act, to me they sounded like a harder version of the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, with very complex guitar work.

At the weekend I heard a Prince song called Slave 2 the System, which had me wondering had the NIN worked with Prince, as it turns out, in the mid 90´s Trent and Prince did some work together.

This is probably one of the reasons that Princes mid 90´s work was so hard cutting, the TGE was definately Princes most hardcore funk, especially the out takes and live performances that are available, Dayz of wild, which for some bizarre reason never made it on to TGE, is in my opinion one of the hardest funk tracks Prince has ever put down, the crystal ball version is one of those tracks I often bring out at parties, when i feel the vibe is right, coz I know that it will have the place working up a sweat.
If it were not for insanity, I would be sane.

NIN and Prince never worked together.

Trent did use "Tamborine" and "Release It!" in a remix of "Head Like a Hole", though.

Thanks to some people here who did say: Shockadelica.

I mean, sometimes you 'forget' a song, because Prince has released so many songs during his career.

But Shockadelica is indeed one of his best hard-funk songs! Especially the extended version with that nasty, dirty guitarsolo is a real gem.

Inspired by another thread about the 'hardest rock track by Prince' i decided to start this, because i like my funk as hard, direct and nasty as possible (in a musical sense, that is).

So, what are Princes hardest funk tracks?

Here are my choices:

1. Automatic (1999):
Not especially 'loud' in the beat department, but the cold sounding, brilliantly organised Linn-beat is right on spot IMO. Combined with those interlocking synths it works just splendid: just so strong and urgent. No smoothing down here, both musically and lyrically.

2. The Grind (The Black album):
Maybe the song is a bit too long for its own good, but when it comes to the 'groove' and the layered, clintonesque arrangement built around it, this is hard funk as it should be, even more direct and in your face then the late Parliament songs it reminds me off.

3. Hide the Bone (The Crystal Ball-set):
Almost stereotypical 'cliched' when it comes to the lyrics, and very catchy / poppy in its melodylines, but most important is that it just 'works' with the hard, dry beat. The straightforward overal funkieness is refreshing IMO.

Runner up:

4. I rock, therefore i am (Chaos and Disorder):
A song often 'talked down' because the gimmickly sounding raps and ragga-parts, but when it comes to the direct, ultracatchy melody, the guitarwork, Rosies background vocals and especially that hard beat (Prince is outclassing Sly and George there) this is a way underrated winner in the hard-funk vein.
[Edited 12/4/07 15:43pm]

No way man, the hardest Prince tracks were never done by Prince, they were done by the Time, under the pseudonym "Jamie Starr" and because I want to cause trouble, I'll still maintain that he never funked as hard as Rick James.

It might be worth considering defining what exactly hard funk is at the begginning of threads like this, as there appears to be alot of contrasting interpretations

This may sound like an odd choice, but i witnessed it at 3am Monday morning at a disco/club in germany in 1993, the Forever in my life live version off the infamous Small Club/Secret Gig aftershow, I remember being first stunned that a bootleg would be played at a club, but to see the dance floor full of people digging it, is one of the funkiest memories I have.

There is also an incredible rehearsal version of Erotic City floating around the universe which has all the ingredients you describe hard, nasty, uncompromising funk lol

Oh yeah!! I can remember back in the day, Erotic city played on the radio and we had my friend pull over so we could pile out of the car and jam on the side of the road!! It was awesome, a carload of dudes stopped and tried to talk to us, etc. we were just having a party. Crazy kids... lol

Erotic city still makes me want to pull over, get out of my car so I can dance.

Like I said before, you couldn't throw a party and not play DMSR extended version. Mojo on WGPR would play this extended version on the radio often.

Yep! Every one of those that I listed is superfunky. Most of the songs have hardcore subject matter, as well(sex related).

Do you know your funk?

For instance, if I said that song with Bootsy on it that has the bass line, guitar and the band screaming "Play" on it was superfunky, you would say WHAT?

Yes... and Prince ain't hardcore funk smile

He might not be, anymore, but Prince used to be superfunky!

Like I said, "Kiss". When I say "Kiss", I not only mean the radio edit, but, also the extended version! "LetItGo" was hardcore to me, barring the saxophone towards the end.
