Has your view of P changed?

Since the release of PFUnk, has your perspective changed? I don't know why, but mine has kind of changed.

I am probably one of the biggest P fans on earth. I have always supported his artistic rights, intelluctual rights, ownership of master recordings, etc., but somehow, I can't seem to agree with him on the issue of sueing (or the threat to do so) fans and fan sites for supporting him.

As many of u know, I frequent this site. I love the people here and have met a few good friends. We always respect his wishes that he posts on 3121, NPGMC, etc., but it pisses me off to think that he would threaten to sue people for having his album cover or prince as an avitar. Come on dude...get a life.

After listening to PFUnk, it took my "dislike" to another level. Sure it sounds good and is 1000% better than anything on PE, but come on, the song just disses us as fans. This makes me question, do I want to support an artist who doesn't seem to want the support. Additionally, do I want to support an artist who disses his fans (I know he's not talking to all of us, but there should be a line drawn).

How do u guys feel?

You know, the song "Love" was about fans and the way we treat him on sites. He never confirmed or denied it, but we all know it for sure...especially after releasing it acoustically on 3121 and giving us all the "evil eye".

Maybe I should have caught the hint the fist time...but now I definitely know what he's about.

No cool

He still "whispers music in my ear that rocks my world" dancing jig

What he does in his "free time" is none of my personal business.

People can call me oblivious, but I've remained unaffected by this.

To me, there's more to being a supporter than the Internet goodies. [Although, I'd like to add... Love (acoustic) and PFunk are dancing jig ]

As long as the music still gets written and albums are still produced,

I'm cool cool

I might be bias with my opinion, but nope. I still love and respect uncle P. My views are the same as they were 30 years ago. He is still cool. Different, but cool.

Nope, my views have'nt changed one bit. kinda find it all quite humourous really. I still love him and his music just as much now as I did back in 1990 when I really started getting into him, I actually like his music even more now. biggrin

Yeah, it has changed. I'm trying to keep that changed view at bay, but not sure that I can. I don't expect Prince to want me as his best friend, but I'm sure not comfortable with him thinking I'm the enemy just because I come to this site.

Yes. He seems to want control over everything including his fans. I think he has made some stupid decisions and it all started when he changed his name from Prince into a symbol, and then back again. People will turn against him. I prefer listening to related artists like Jill Jones and Sheila E.

No. This is business as usual unfortunately. Prince is doing what Prince always does or tries to do, be in control of everything, for better or worse.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

No my view of P hasn't changed since the threat to sue started. To be more clear it's always been quite obvious to even the most casual observer that this wonderful and gifted musician has personal issues, in particular as it relates to trust and control. Look I have never pretended to know him personally, in fact I really don't care to know him on a personal level. All I do know is that one's actions say a lot about a person on many levels. I feel bad, I can only imagine how his earliest years have somehow hurt him on a very deep level. From my earliest recollections of Prince he eventually gets paranoid on some level and pulls some silly and stupid shit. In the end I respect him as an artist that creates music and I respect from that perspective. But when I think about how on American Bandstand he threw up his hand in Dick Clark's face to the assless pants on MTV to the semi homo dance on the Arsenio Hall Show I just burst out laughing. On a positive note I deeply admire him as a person who sticks to his guns on ownership and being unique and his ability to keep on creating music and sharing it with us. We all know communicating outside the studio is not his strong point. So my answer is simply no!

The only people I can see having a wake-up call about Prince over recent actions are people who jumped on the ship in the last few of years. Anyone who's been a Prince-nut since before then must surely expect the unexpected.

Let me set the record straight....I still love him and his music, but it seems as if he is trying to alienate us as fans with threats. This is not the 1st time he's done it, but this is the 1st time I've felt this way. Maybe I'm just tired of the same old stuff.

Many fell out with him over 10 years ago with the Crystall Ball fiasco. I didn't because I knew better than to "pre-order" a cd. Many fell out with him over the NPGMC stuff...I didn't because I felt I got my money's worth both years.

I still love and respect him musically but am a little upset with him. It's like being in a bad relationship, you still love the person, but feel that it may be time to move on.

It's like we're trying too hard to remain fans of Prince. We shouldn't have to try so hard. I do like the PFUnk song though. It sounds great! It IS like an abusive relationship though. confused

I've never confused Prince with someone I would personally like. There's an outside chance that he could be, but a few decades of acting like an ass suggests otherwise. So no, my view of what I think he's like hasn't really changed.

Move on to who? (that's a genuine question btw not sarcasm). After P, where do you go, whose gonna do it for you in the way he can/has - musically?

Haha... I don't have to try at all. Once I crossed over into Prince world, I never looked back, so 2 speak.
Like an abusive relationship? Yeah, its kinda like marriage. Someone else brought that up on another thread. Kinda crazy, thinking that being a supporter of Prince is like being in marriage (for better or for worse)
That sounds almost as ridiculous as... shoot I had something Prince-related for this, I'll come back later when I remember.

Exactly. I said early on when I started getting the music, I'm like "oh boy, this is the ultimate. There's no other artist that will cover this many bases that I could find that'll give me the same enjoyment as Prince." But that's okay.

I'm going to be honest - I think he's fucking up. Going after fan forums is petty, in my opinion. I definitely feel like he's overstepping his boundaries in trying to control where and how other people express their opinions.

Insulting the poor and the sick also didn't help my opinion of him, so Yes, my view has changed.

For the worse.

No. Prince is great. I've always questioned his personal life (like when he changed his name to the symbol. It was before I knew his music) and thought he was weird. But his music speaks for itself.

Actually, my view has not changed. I've been listening to Prince since the beginning, I would surely call myself a fan, collect whatever I could, when I was a teen up until my 20's, any magazine, newspaper clippings, records I found at the local wrecka stow, etc. I wasn't heavy on bootlegs, but if I came across it I checked it out. Been to the concerts, still buy the official stuff, but not so heavy anymore on the "collectible" stuff. If I find it then cool, but if not, I am satisfied with whatever the man puts out. Since the beginning, EVERY album, there has been songs I absolutely loved, and songs I've absolutely hated. That has not changed, up till Planet Earth. But no matter, I am a fan, and I still buy it, just to check it out. I have been a member of this website since the get go, pml, ppml and all that, I dont post often, once in awhile, I feel for both sides. Plain and simple, that doesnt make me the enemy. Prince has his rights, but so does this site. I can't help Prince, and unfortunately I can't help this site, I am not rich, if I was, or was an attorney, I would gladly offer help no problem to this site and Ben, but I am just an everyday fan coming here not to post like crazy, but to read up on him and the latest news on him. I support this site because it is the right thing to do, we've all read the posts, seen the site, it is not "evil" and we aren't trying to make ourselves rich off of Prince, we simply want to talk about his latest whatever. So, my answer is my view has not changed, I still come here everyday to read the forums, I enjoy all the comraderie here, and I still love the music that Prince puts out.

My view of Prince has not changed since the release of "PFUnk". He's still a talented artist that makes music that I enjoy. "PFUnk" was an excellent example of just that. Can't see getting twisted up in negativity that has no bearing on the functioning of my everyday affairs. Too many other issues that hold a higher priority in my personal life. Prince and his funky music only make my world a happier place.

My view hasn't changed. Prince always clamps down on his fans during the 'off season' (ie. with no new album or tour to promote). It has almost become a sign of big things to come lol.

As for the song, well, the message isn't really any different from "Love", "Billy Jack Bitch" or "Hello", basically he's saying "stay the hell outta my face!" lol

In some ways it's just reinforced the 'badass' that Prince is. He never plays by the rules - be it artistically, buisness wise or even with fans. Sometimes it works in his favour, and other times it does not. Who knows, maybe in 10 years time people will look back and respect him for being the first major artist to 'stand up for his digital rights' or whatever.
