"Man, he's a piece of work"

Which of Prince's songs give you that kind of reaction?

Sounds a little sarcastic, I know... but hey, it could either be for sarcastic, as in the song being so unbelievable with the lengths he goes to in order to get his message across.

Computer Blue
Automatic

these 2 songs give me that kind of reaction. It's unbelievable with the lengths he goes to, especially Computer Blue, with it being nearly 12 minutes long, phew...

But in the positive sense,

Purple Rain
Alexa de Paris

are 2 TRUE pieces of work in my mind.

some of the stuff you mentioned(especially that long version of "computer blue").but other ones also come to mind like:"crystal ball","all my dreams","we can funk"(the 10 min. gb version),"come","if i was your girlfriend"(especially the end speech,in fact all his songs with speeches in them are weird and quite awesome),"there's others here with us" and many others.i like that he goes off the deep end or to the left sometimes.its part of why i like him.he's a freak.but in a good way. lol
For all time I am with you, you are with me.

Several songs written between 82-86 were crucial to understanding his psyche, some of which include:

Dance Electric
Extra Loveable
Something In the Water
Computer Blue
Crystal Ball

And in particular, the entire album Around the World In A Day. Having come to a new understanding of the more religious/spiritual Prince of today, I put that album in my iPod, and listened to it start to finish. It is almost a purer version of Planet Earth, in a cheeky way.

I always have to go back to, "I'm Yours" because that song is incredible, musically, lyrically, and Prince's age, is what reveals this marvelous talent...

"Purple Rain" is so immortal...beautiful. Moving.

The Rainbow Children collection, to me is, ahead of it's time, I believe this CD will survive generations, as a superb, pre-meditational, musical ballad.

And, not to neglect, so many other things, but to highlight, "Musicology."
This song, is so simple and true, that only a genius mind could write this.
"The Lion Sleeps Tonight...

Interesting take, I must say.

As far as his psyche, I have just the progression of songs that helps explain that to me.

Automatic-Something in the Water-Computer Blue-Tambourine-Temptation

I haven't heard The Dance Electric or the original Crystal Ball (or any Crystall Ball)... and Extra Loveable I haven't listened to close enough to understand yet.

But that progression is very interesting to me... but Computer Blue is the biggest gem in there. Makes me kinda worry about what's going on in his head, but it was definitely something he had to confront to get to where he is now.

ATWIAD, I haven't listened to in a while... that comparison to PE... I'll definitely have to see what I see when I do those 2 albums. I've compared ATWIAD to Controversy because they feel like they're structured about the same and entertain as well as make you think.

But I love PE so I see it definitely than those who aren't so into it. But thanks for the tip.
