I'm moving my post to this thread because our rule-maker - June7 - left me no other choice to be heard. I don't understand this, because my letter was not in reference to one thing. My thread was not just about the youtube thing. I understand that this site needs Moderators, but I find it unneccessary in this case. I hope it was okay for me to say this. I'm starting to feel like Prince is making the rules on the 'org' also.



My Letter to Prince,

When I heard about the little 2yo boy and his family on ABC being sued because "Let's Go Crazy" (Ooops, am I allowed to even say it?) was playing in the background, I can't believe how much a punch in the gut it was. Being a fan of yours, my friends at work gave me a heck of a time. I mean it was one thing when you didn't want anyone to look at you at those mid-eighties award shows, but to sue this family or even threaten to has caused me to take a stand against you and your music. And what I mean by stand, I'm locking up all the thousands and thousands of dollars of merchandise I have spent on you since 1984. My older brother feels the same, and he's been a fan since 1979. We won't be listening to you for a long time, and although I'm sure some of your I-Would-Die-4-U diehards will rally against me in this letter on the org, they should all dig deep and feel a sense of shame that our music hero has turned into such a cash cow monopolist.

What's really sad is that you know there is a ton of bootleg material out there - everything but your birth certificate, and we all know that instead of going after the ones who are really profitting off you, you go after ebay and youtube to get a little lime light. Well, let me say, the light it sheds on you is in no way flattering. You should get over yourself.

I've always joked with my friends, saying if I had a flat on the side of the road who do you think would be kind enough to stop and help me - Prince or Bruce Springsteen? I think we all know the answer.

I really wish you would reach out to your real fans instead of these Hollywood socialites. They get into you little clubs for free and you charge your true fans 2 arms and a leg. I bet if Eva Longoria or Jamie Foxx went on Youtube singing one of your songs they wouldn't get a lawyer at thier doorstep. Truly I have seen you do some selfish stuff before, but this time you've gone too far, and for all the orgers reading this you must agree...enough is enough.

my original response was off the top of my head.
i did not realize the depth of the issue until reading this thread further.

i do support P in protecting his property 100%,
but there is a way to do it gracefully in the public eye.
if he ignores this aspect, he does come across as very hard-core, which is totally unnecessary.
it is a good way to get negative publicity, which makes me sad for him.

i think the arguments about P getting free publicity on YouTube are 100% bunk.
these creations belong to him and he has the RIGHT to CONTROL
his creations and their correlating publications, period.

i agree that all in this thread should look deeper at the issue vs.
the surface innocence of the video content.
P is always ahead of the game technologically, IMO.
many good points have already been made, so i'll try not to repeat them.
but let me indulge in the following illustration:

let's say the Lenz baby video is "A" in the alphabet scale of 'borrowing' music.

now let's say a porn videographer (prince fan) could make a 30 min video of all P music
w/GROSS content for "entertainment purposes only," the real agenda being to promote themselves . . .
this would constitute a "Z" in the alphabet scale of 'borrowing' his music.

if my intellectual property were ABUSED by anyone to promote themselves in this manner,
i would be enraged.

bottom line:
YouTube is a stewpot waiting to boil over scouring many artists' rights
all in the name of everyday people having a good time.
there MUST be a line drawn somewhere, sometime by someone.

i DO NOT defend all of Prince's actions, never have.
but in this case, i am in fact PROUD of him for standing up for his rights
in the midst what must be very difficult.

i can only hope Prince takes Anon's considered advice.
one decent publicity statement would soften his image, explain his position,
and pave the way for other artists to follow.
i admire Prince's leadership, but his "style" needs to be kind.

if Prince is so good at defending his creations,
i think he needs to learn to defend his image in tandem with these actions.
it may get worse in this information age & technocracy.

There was a time when I wouldn't have questioned anything the man did. I was however a kid then and incredibly naive. Prince is a complete knob head who, as talented and as great as his music is, really doesn't care about anybody but himself.

This is the most shocking display of spitting the dummy out I have ever heard. For fuck sake Prince, you are, no doubt, a multi millionaire who will never have to worry about money again but it seems to me you are as tight as a camel's arse in a sandstorm.

Fucking grow up, I know you look like a 10 year old kid from a distance being tiny and all but you are supposed to be a man. Do your staff have to beg for another coal on the fire in the wintertime? Maybe another name change is in order - Ebeneezer would fit the bill perfectly.

people like you make me laugh, you obviously didn't read my post because I never said that he owed me anything. the fact is however that he wouldn't be anywhere without the fans as without them his music would never have become popluar therefore he would have been dropped by his record label long before he had the audacity to start bitching about them aswell (who also incidentally had a major part to play in his success).

The only time he even talks to his fans/fellow humans is to demand something or preach 'the truth'.

Why not a civil message saying to us explaining what he keeps doing? many other artists leave meassages for their supporters but Prince feels we are beneath him unless of course we love jehovah.
