Do you like the NPG name?

I'm not sure what's in a name for Prince's backing band, at least as far as Prince is concerned, but for me, "New Power Generation" is feeling a little stale. Isn't it time for a change? What I consider to be Prince's best band, the Lovesexy band, never had an official name. Prince has been playing with the "New Power Generation" for over 15 years now, even though he's cycled through a lot of different band members. But the coolest band name for him was "The Revolution." It sounded great...Prince and the Revolution. Prince and the NPG just doesn't come close. Maybe it's time for something new?

Or am I alone in caring about this?

I think the New Power Generation is just fine as Prince once said they want to change the world. He and his band will continue to do that one song at a time, for those that want to listen and learn. It's a continuous learning process, but the name should stay the same.

Why change it when they can reinvent it?
Prince and the Generation (Still the New Power Generation, though).
It's much less like Menudo this way...he won't have to keep replacing people to keep the generations new.

I like both the Revolution and The New Power Generation.

They both helped Prince accomplish what he was trying to convey musically at the time.

Both of the bands have their own style, or "sound", and Prince's current sound still sounds like "The New Power Generation".

But I also like when it's just Prince. wink

He should change it back to Champagne or Grand Central....those are probably the coolest bandnames for his style of music....Prince comes up with sweet bandnames, I guess....
Maybe we can go to the movies and cry together

Wait. Is this New Power Generation as in a generation of people or
from a Power Generator?, like they generate power, or both? Never really thought about the name before. I like it a bit more.

With all respect to whomever has played with the band, I thought that NPR, would be kind of cool because it could stand for, New Power Revolution or
New Power Revelation. And it would be Prince's initials.

LOVE the name NPG! Also loved the Revolution.

NPG fits with PRINCE and what he is doing musically just like the "Symbol" prince is synonymous with his name "Prince".

he would probably keep it until he has a superhit where non-fans people can add "and the new power generation" when u say prince to them

remember in the 80s, u said "prince" and always somebody added "and the REVOLUTION!!"

i still know people that today say "hey whats prince and the revolution" doing these days?

always sound afully cheesy to me. I never like to say it in public and feel like a 12 year old when I do.

Way too Micheal Jackson Pepsi Gerneration/Janet Jackson Rythym Nation for my tastes.

Dont understand why it's lasted for so long.

No one cares about the band name except us hardcore fans.

That said, I thought "the Revolution" was the coolest name for a band ever.

the fact that he has been too lazy to come up with a new name is really indicative of the lack of passion, interest and imagination for the music itself.

The NPG dont really exist, they are a backing band. Only in the early days were they really a "band", obviously they released some music under that name too when Prince couldnt use his own name, but now a days, they just back him up.

In a way the revolution were only a backing band too, but the band members had "personalities" which Prince tried to promote, like W&L, Dr. Fink, etc... He started the personality thing with Tommy Barbarella, Tony M, and big fat MBland, but I have this suspicion that he has chopped and changed the group now that no one really thinks of it as a proper group anymore and just purely a backing band which anyone can join.

The original NPG had tons of personality. I loved Michael Bland and thought he brought a lot to Prince's music (your comment's a little rude). Tommy and Sonny were great as well. I liked Rosie a lot, but to be honest, I could take or leave her. Still, it's interesting to me that the NPG has never had a set image or lineup, which the Revolution certainly did.

Keep it simple. What about just "Prince & the Band"?

i only liked NPG when it originally replaced the Revolution in name
because it seemed more positive than "revolting" against _____ ?
NPG has not worn well for me. it's way tired.
heck, it's been MORE THAN A GENERATION since he made the name,
so how can they still be new power question
this "new power" over the last 15 (i think it's longer) years hasn't gotten us very far . . .

also, the NPG has had so many incarnations of band members, that it MEANS very little to me.
at least the Revolution symbolized the inclusion of Lisa & Wendy & the Doc question

Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers doesn't face the same challenge
cause there's not an element of time in the verbage.

i loved the name the Revolution at all times, cause of the Rebel R&R element,
but finally tired of it since it never seemed to "deliver,"
that is: revolting against something worthwhile.

i like Tame's points above . . .
but i would drop new power altogether.

maybe we need a Higher Powered Revolution conceptually.
i'm not suggesting this as a title.

I just think that NPG is more about what the message is behind the name or title and not so much as to who are the actual band members at any given time. Just my
twocents

New Power Generation

Lay down your funky weapon (Whoo!)
Yeah y'all, here we go
Pumpin' the big noise in the 90s

Pardon me 4 livin' but this is my world 2
I can't help if what's cool 2 us might be strange 2 U
Pardon me 4 breathin', can we borrow some of your air?
The problem with U and your kind is U don't know love is there

CHORUS:
Lay down your funky weapon, come join us on the floor
Makin' love and music's the only things worth fighting 4
We are the New Power Generation - we wanna change the world
The only thing that's in our way is U, ooh
Your old fashioned music, your old ideas
We're sick and tired of U telling us what 2 do, ooh

Pardon me 4 thinkin' but there's something under my hair
I bet (maybe) U thought the lights were on but no one's livin' there
U think that if U tell enough lies they will see the truth
I hope they bury your old ideas the same time they bury U

CHORUS
(Oh yeah)
(Oh)
(U, U)

We are the new (huh!)
We are the new {x2}
Makin' love and music
New Power, (huh!) we stand

Pardon us 4 caring, we didn't know it was against the rules (Shout it out)
If we only wanna love one another then tell me now, who's the fool? (Tell me, tell me)
No father, no mother, no sister, no brother, nobody can make me stop

So if U didn't come 2 party child, I think U better get up offa my block!

CHORUS {x2}
(Hey yeah, yeah)
(Yeah)
(U, U, U, U)
(Your old ideas)
(Why don't U just be happy, baby?)
(Go'n on and get up offa my block)
(Get up offa my block, cuz love is there)
(If U'd just open up 2 it)
(If U'd just believe, your whole world would change, yes it will)

New Power Generation
(Oh-oh-oh) {x3} {repeat}
U got 2 rearrange (We've got 2 rearrange)
We are the New Power Generation
U gotta give up all the fightin'
We gotta try 2 love one another, yeah
We are the New Power Generation {x3} {fade out}
