I love Dolphin! It's one of the most uplifting songs he's ever done (at least of which I know)! The guitar playing and the solo is awesome! When I was in London for the concerts, I was listening to it on my MP3 player when I was at the tubestation... it took everything to not burst out into singing and jumping around to that song! It's so engaging! I absolutely love it!

I could have sworn that, too. I think the only people who don't work for Warners since it is never included on any collection!

"Dolphin" I like but I can understand it being divisive.

Some songs will reveal their merits over time. I love Mountains but I can see how some people might think it is somehow light or very poppy. They just haven't felt it yet. I never used to like Neil Young or the Rolling Stones growing up and then one day I started to get it. Prince is like that. His music is so broad ranging that people are always saying "well I like this song but I hate that song" etc.
I know it's arrogant to call those who don't like it wrong but that is my musical instinct, they just don't understand it...sorry.

If I were to pit the two songs against one another, even though I have known Dolphin the longer...

Mountains has this special magical quality about it that just can't be described sometimes. It's very uplifting and happy and the music is just the right mix between chill music and music that makes u wanna dance.

I know whenever I play the extended version (only on my computer), I can't restrict it to headphones... I gottsta crank it up!! dancing jig

I must say I think Mountains is a legend track. I first heard it when I got the Parade album and the 'love' was instant. But then I saw him sing it live at Wembley in 86 and it has since been indelibly etched in my memory.

It always has a special place in my love of Prince's work.

I only wish he sang it live at the O2 this summer

Hate 'Dolphin' love 'Mountains'.

To me, 'Mountains' is more of a Wendy & Lisa record than a Prince record. If Wendy had sang the lead vocal instead of Prince, it really wouldn't have made much difference. Love the song - it's timeless.

'Dolphin' belongs in the same dumpster as 'Graffiti Bridge', 'Jughead', '3 Chains O' Gold', 'Animal Kingdom', 'Mr. Happy' etcetera...

I never understand why mountains and dolphin sometimes get such a bad rap. Mountains is great fun and really catchy, whilst Dolphin is one of Prince's greatest ever tunes, maybe one of the greatest tunes ever written!

I know there are many of us who love these songs, but for those haters out there, please let me know why you hate either song so much.

cheers

Extended "Mountains"- cool
"Dolphin"- confused
"Dolphin" just doesn't make sense to me. I mean, really, why a dolphin? Why not "If I came back as a poodle" or something...?

I dont see Mountains getting much hate in here.

Dolphin is a bit more critisized, mostly because of the lyrics. The lyrics are indeed a bit cheesy, but in terms of the melodylines, the playing and the arrangement. i myself consider it as one of his best tracks from the nineties.

Melodywise, the chorus could have been a bit stronger, but in general this is probably his best pure pop-melody since Glam Slam (from Lovesexy) or 7 (from Symbol).

The arrangement is great: not to simple, but not overdone also. With a great bridge that reminds me of both Queen and the Beatles, and some understated, but delicate guitarwork from Prince. The harmonies used in the last chorus sound plendid, and 'lift' the melody.

Finally: in terms of the playing, this song is proof for me that the NPG were the best (backing)band in popmusic at that time. In fact: it is one of the most obvious qualities of the entire album. The NPG around that period were a band that could sound supertight, but not rigid, and loose at the same time. There definitely was a 'click' between those musicians and i consider that version of the NPG the best band Prince ever had.

And it was actually slated for Come originally, but it was put on TGE after configuring both albums.

eek R U serious?? Dolphin is not THAT terrible. I could barely stomach Jughead when I heard it the first time. "3 Chains O' Gold" doesn't even feel like a Prince song... it sounded like some huge production that really wasn't necessary. The prince album had so much good music that he didn't need to go out of his way there.

I like Dolphin; it's irresistibly catchy. Yeah, the lyrics are corny, but I always viewed it as Prince talking about record companies trying to market him as something cute and family-friendly.

When he talks about coming back as a dolphin, it's like he's saying that to his fans, too.

"...Would you listen to me then?"

I totally agree. I love dolphins ..even though alot of people say the lyrics are cheesy..at times he is talking about something alot of us can relate to-not being accepted for who you truley are. I think it was written well as to not bluntly say it but make you think.Mountains is one of those songs that always brings a smile to my face. Elephants and flowers is a great song to- I just could'nt understand the lyrics till I actually read them! lol
