He's on "Superfunkycalifragisexy", #6 on The Black Album. What do you mean by "nothing to do" with any of the tracks on the Black Album?

What makes you say that? The title is obviously inspired by George but I've never heard that he had anything to do with that album (and I was around at the time and listening pretty closely - as a fan of course). He didn't start working with Prince till after this.

Oh, and to the other poster, the Xtasy story happened after he'd recorded it (according to legend) Lovesexy is the X album, just listen to the Alphabet St rap (you kiss you enemies like you know you should, then you jerk your body like a horny pony would) - If you've ever done X, you'll understand. Apparently.

Oh, and I do have it. Bought bootleg vinyl back in '87 and loved it. A bit sad when the CD came out, but bought that too - I used to be a completist.

I have it, and my fav song is "We Can Funk". Prince looks entirely wasted in the picture on the CD.

on the Black Album?

The CD I have has the Black Albume, #1-8, then Crystal Ball #9-16. I bought it at a vintage CD store for $20.00. It has "1987 Controversey Music ASCAD" on the lyrics page.
We Can Funk is song #16.

I bought the CD the second it came out -- mainly because I'd lost the tape somebody made me in '88.

In fact, I've bought every Prince album (since 1999) the second it came out. Ya never know how long they're gonna be in print. shrug

We Can Funk wasn't on Crystal Ball, either.

George Clinton is ALL OVER that record. In fact, it could really be described as a George Clinton production with Prince on lead vocals.

The entire intro is George, and if you think about it, it has the same feel as the theme he did for the Tracy Ulman show, which he recorded around the same time. Beyond that, that Mad Laughter you hear in the intro (Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha), right before Prince comes in with his little trademark scream, is George. And George is singing every hook: Super-Funky-Cali-Fragi-Sexy, then Prince does his scream. They do that together on every hook. And then right after the first verse, after Prince sings "...and if you kiss somebody, you wanna party all night" George comes in with "Well Alright!" Then they go to the hook again, with George on; Super-Funky-Cali-Fragi-Sexy.

And then not really wanting to give my age away, and I believe you when you say you were around when this song came out, but a few of my closest "Funk" buddies and I specifically remember the Hype of "George Clinton & Prince" do a song together on the Black Album, just before it was pulled. Although I'll admit that the album credits are hard to find anywhere for that album. But if you're a fan of P-Funk at all, listen to Superfunkycalifragisexy again, you CAN NOT MISS George Clinton's voice all over that record, AND it's produced in classic George Clinton fashion (the orchestra hits, drum rolls and such).

And yes, I realize that George wasn't heavily promoted as recording with Prince until "The Ciderella Theory" when he "officially" moved to Paisley Park records. But he recorded a few songs with Prince prior to that, all of which I'm sure can be found in that infamous VAULT.

I can't be much more specific than this, but it's a fact: George Clinton & Prince recorded "Superfunkycalifragisexy" together. Listen to it again now that you're armed with this extra info, and if you still can't hear it, I'm afraid there's not much more I can do to point it out or illustrate it for you.

Supposedly, Prince recorded that song alone, Clinton's voice in nowhere on the recording. Certainly it is inspired by Clinton, but Prince did not work with him on that song. It is a solo Prince song. "The vault" has let go of an outtake pre-mastered version of the song that sounds a bit rawer and is longer, and Clinton isn't on that one either.

All the lines you listed as Clinton, sound only like Prince's voice. Plus there is documentation in some of these detailed books that Prince recorded it alone.

according to some sources:

"Superfunky-" was recorded solo in September 1986 at Prince's home studio, then revamped for the Black Album in October 1987.

The name is derived from the "Mary Poppins" song "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" which also inspired Parlaiment's "Supergroovalisticprosifunkstication"

all the vocals and instruments are supposedly Prince.

The voice sounds nothing like Clinton's voice to my ears! The music sounds like a retro wah groove (which clinton uses a lot), but the other elements: the beat, the vocal layers, the effects, and the dark bass synth and strings sounds like Prince. The lyrics do sound like they might be inspired by Clinton's vibe.

Cuz of all the unreleased tracks on there. Also...look at the "copyright" date. If it's between 1987 and 1994 (ie, before The Black Album was officially released), it's gotta be a boot.

Then Prince goes on to sing the words on the Lovexexy tour "people without do exctasy" Prince had a bad experience on MDMA, so goes the story.

Hi! Yeah, I'm aware that story was timed after the album was recorded, which is my point. Superfunki suggests he'd already tried it, so perhaps he did it more than once. I've never considered the lyric you quote to be anything about E - that just seems to be about compassion (kissing your enemies) and dancing. Alphabet St does not appear to be a "drug" song, unless you consider the refrain from the 12-inch "This is not music, this is a trip. No, its not a drug, its something more hip". The "drug" song on Lovesexy is actually AnnaStesia, which is about the dark experience Prince had on E.

Should the question not be 'Who bought the a bootleg recording of it or managed to acquire the original promo LP and how much did they pay'.

I know someone who paid over £50 ($100)just to get a bootleg recording on tape. That was back in the 80's.

I bought my TBA cd second hand from a local record store for 5 euros
and got another copy for free from the library where I work.
It wasn't popular enough so they were getting rid of it. neutral

They've also got 1999 without DMSR, is that rare?

Of course I have it!

Had it on tape for years then snapped up a CD copy when that was released.

People say Prince said "don't buy it" that was more to do with his dispute with the record company. Otherwise why would my favourite track have been such a large segment of the Lovesexy tour Bob George with one of Princes best lyric lines ever:

Prince?
Ain't that a bitch?
That skinny motherfucker with the high voice?
