PLEASE CAN SOMEONE TELL ME IF THEY OFFICIALLY KNOW WHAT PRINCE MEANS BY 'THE PURPLE RAIN'?!! I HAVE OFTEN THOUGHT AND COULD NEVER FIND OUT.

miles davis did "blue haze" and Jimi Hendrix did "purple haze" so prince had to do "purple rain"

jimi called himself "the wild blue angel" so prince called his guitar "the blue angel"

jimi had the experience and prince did the gold experience

Once when I was listening to it, I was thinking the same thing.

But I got my answer pretty quick.

The rain is colored purple in Heaven... so he's hoping for us (and/or his lover) to reach Heaven one day.

It's an earlier version of "the dawn." As in, "May u live to see..."

Purple rain is a lyric in Ventura Highway by America in 1972 - I imagine there is some connection there.

Just wanted to add to your comment bout purple rain being an incredibly dated movie... well i just re watched it and although in my teens thought it was THE best film in the world, now it seemed like a really corny film with prince overacting in places, however i still really enjoyed the film and wanted to still watch though 13 year old glasses so it wouldn't spoil my infatuation with the purple god!! He just gets better with age( lucky guy!!)

Purple Rain to me, is a holy bath that can wash away the pains of the mind and the spirit...It's a sad, inspirational song.

"Purple Rain" is a double entendre - it has two meanings:
1) Ejaculate
2) Salvation
