Horrible. They bypass all the moody dramatic spaces in the song and replace them with over the top histronics. Prince's version is all about tension while the other is about singing in the mirror.

Prince is such a complex and unique talent. Why would anyone cover such well known songs instead of obscure ones. That is why Sinead's works. She creates a unique narrative all her own. I can't decide whether I like her version better because I heard it first or whether it's just better.
Exactly what I felt. Prince version is all about the drama, the emotions, begging and pleading, what makes me cry everytime. Mariah's version is just about a vocal session. I am a Mariah Carey fan, but the song does'nt feel the way it's meant to feel when she does it.

Princey sings it the best.... woot! Princey!

I recently went to see the show on the 6th at the O2 and he sang the full version there accompanied by just his piano and it was truly awesome !!

You can read me going doo-lally over it in this thread :

I loved your description in that thread by the way! Made me wish I was there to see it with the way you described the song!

The part where the climax he was so full of passion, screaming, and kicking back the stool and him putting his heart and soul into that number!...wow, I'm breathless now...

That's also what's lacking in TLC's "If I Was Your Girlfriend", Ginuwine's "When Doves Cry", and Alicia Keys' "How Come U Don't Call Me". His best songs have emotion and nuances that not everybody can convey, let alone grasp. Sinead's "Nothing Compares to U" surpasses Prince's because her version is more believable and passionate than his (atleast the versions I've heard).

This is why P hates it when other folks attempt at trying to cover his material. Especially a track like this one. Mariah should have been able to do a better job but I think she truly lacks understanding of certain nuances u must have in really doing a good vocal. Most times she sounds like a 11 year old girl who's been told by everyone in the hood that she can "sang" so she just goes around hollering all the time.

I like it.
"When Michael Jackson is just singing and dancing, you just think this is an astonishing talent. And he has had this astounding talent all his life, but we want him to be floored as well. We really donĀ“t like the idea that he could have it all."

You're right, they totally messed up the song. It doesn't even sound A LITTLE good. When I heard it, I wondered what they could have possibly been thinking AND drinking!
I didn't even know last night was the ten year anniversary of Prince Night. I'm sure glad I went! I've been going off and on since 1997.

i dont think its too bad, but i do think that no one can sing a prince song like erm well prince neutral neutral specially if they are busting a gut trying to sound like him and sing his style. if yer gonna attempt it, do it in yer own style!!!

i listened to beyonce and prince at the grammys 2004 i think it was, the other day, and my exact words to my mate were 'if you wanna hear what murder sounds like, then listen to this!!!!!' it was awful!!! i like beyonce but she completely and utterly murdered a great timeless piece of music!!!!! AND more to the point, i think she put prince off too, and im not talking with her booty shakin etc, im talkin about the way she sang it!!
hey.... look me over, tell me do u like what u see

The vitriol folks are sharing about a Prince cover is interesting.

Just think: Someone feels the same way about his having the nerve to cover and butcher some pretty widely loved classics such as:

:eye: Can't Make U Love Me

Got a Whole Lotta Love

I Want to Take You Higher

Red House

All Along the Watchtower

One of Us

Prince's songs aren't any more special than those songs he's covered, nor are they worthy of some special reverence.

He just better stay far away from "Little Wing," or the little cricket gets it.
