Mountains and Dolphin - why the hate?

I never understand why mountains and dolphin sometimes get such a bad rap. Mountains is great fun and really catchy, whilst Dolphin is one of Prince's greatest ever tunes, maybe one of the greatest tunes ever written!

I know there are many of us who love these songs, but for those haters out there, please let me know why you hate either song so much.

cheers

Yeah, I've never heard anyone say they hate Mountains. I don't hate Dolphin, but the lyrics are some of the cheesiest he's ever written. Fortunately, the music's pretty good smile

What do you mean "mountains gets a bad rap" around here?

If anything, it's been praised from every direction as far as I can tell.
It's one of my favorite Parade tracks (but then again, I love a lot of the songs there)... and the extended version's out of this world. I tell ya.
cloud9 baby cool

As for "Dolphin"... I think it might be the lyrics. People call them "cheesy." I have my own definition of cheesy and that ain't it, haha. The really cheesy songs are among the ones that I don't get very into at all.
"Dolphin" is beautiful and dare I say it, its one of those songs that just wrote itself. cool

look through the "worst song" threads etc. it keeps popping up. I remember one thread where people kept bashing mountains as it wasnt a cool song to release (from Parade, etc). I just dont get it, its a great song!

People hate Mountains? confuse

As others have noted, Dolphin is rather weak lyrically. I live in Wisconsin -- and have access to cheese a-plenty as it is. I don't need a side with my Prince, thanks. talk to the hand

What are you on about? I've been on this site for years and Mountains has never come in for undue criticism. I'm sure not everyone loves it (I do), but it's hardly one of the most hated Prince songs.

Dolphin, again I've not seen it slagged off much, although I can't agree that its' one of his, let alone 'the' greatest songs. It's so catchy it sounds like a Coke jingle, and the lyrics are awful but it would've been a good single if he hadn't mired it in all the Warners stuff.

I love both songs, but if I were to say something negative about Mountains, it's that the lyrics are very hard to distinguish in some places. I listened to that song for years, even the 12" vers., before I knew that line 3 in verse 2 is "Africa divided, highjack in the air" - there are a couple other places in the song where I had to have the lyrics in front of me.

i have never heard anything bad said about mountains, not on this board, not on housequake, not on usenet, and not in any review in any magazine or any website.

i will say though that i dont really like the extended version in comparison with the original. if it were an extended version of the album version it would be cool (i like the actual "extended" section) but its not. the actual main song sounds quite different. it really doesnt have the cool heavy sitar-ish drone and full-sounding production of the album version and it has a lame waka-waka guitar in it (which MIGHT be actually in the original as well but just mixed way down, i think i can hear it at points; im not talking about either of the guitars you can hear on the breakdown). i also hate the snare in the extended version, and the horns are mixed too far down.

To be truthful Vinx. I love "Mountains", It's one of the most uplifting songs Prince has ever written. But I can't stand "Dolphins" It just does'nt do it for me.
