I could never work at Paisley. It would kill me being that close to the vault and knowing this stuff. I'd be so tempted. Maybe someone close to Prince can talk some sense into him?? It'd be nice to hear/see this stuff while those who would most appreciate it are still alive.

That's funny, because one of my friends who worked hard on Paisley Park's digital makeover told me Prince invited him into the vault, and he just said no. He didn't want the "responsibility" of having been in there.

I'd love to hear whatever's in the vault but on the other hand, Prince has already released way more than music than the average artist releases in a lifetime.

If no more music was ever released, I wouldn't feel incomplete.

Sorry but i think the stuff in the past has a higher interest level than than the new shit - he had a passion back then...

thankfully, the bootleggers have been keeping a big chunk of the vault very well-preserved over time. lol

Who would have imagined that the bootleggers would be the ones that preserved some of his legacy!

i know, how sad ia this! even if they're only doing it for money, at least THEY have some respect for his back catalogue! fucking shocking really!!!

Are you kidding me?? As much as a control freak as Prince is do you really think he would let his music catalog become ruined?

Um, yeah - do u have any evidence to the contary - seriously, to him it seems as if it was 10 minutes ago, fuck it, its in the past and that doesnt matter - he has no respect for his past, and, you know, frankly, thats when he was at his best...

If we never get to hear all the stuff in the Vault then I really hope that the very best stuff he never released has made it onto bootleg already . The supply of new outtakes has dried up over the last decade but that means we've got a good selection of unreleased material from the first 20 years of his career , I don't think we've got toooo much to complain about biggrin

actually, i do. even if what's been leaked is a fraction of what's actually in the vault, it's still a big chunk of music. who else has so much unreleased studio material floating around these days?

Surely there's tons of stuff but how many are completed songs? Besides sketches, jams, instrumentals. Having recently acquired a bunch of studio outtakes many weren't really completed, they lacked the final mixdown of little details/layering he puts in his released tracks. Of course many would love to hear 1999 pt 2 and the techno album. razz

Does anyone know exactly where the Vault is? The original poster said "down there in the Vault", so I assume it is underground somewhere. Which might be a good place to keep tape from melting in the summertime seasons.

He may be like Johnny Carson. Entertainment Tonight once reported that Johnny had all of his master videos of "The Tonight Show" in Utah in a specially built underground vault that is made of salt. Supposedly, all of the salt keeps the tapes from decaying and avoids damage.

Forgetting all those unknown tracks for the moment - there is more to his vault than that! What about the numerous versions of already existing tracks? That could be the cream of the vault right there. God knows how many Prince tracks you are currently indifferent to, but may be approaching classic status in another unreleased form. He could have released one of those Maxi-singles for probably half of his catalogue! The boots have proved it. We Can Funk was a stunning little number which was derailed by a George Clinton makeover. Even just a slight remixing can turn a classic bootleg into an average official release (Crucial). I've always felt he somehow managed to sell Question of U a bit short. A stunning composition which became an OK song. The unreleased orchestral versions do the track complete justice however.

He's probably unique for the amount of tracks he has re-recorded from the bottom up, either over years or consecutively. I can't remember the source, but I read over 15 years ago that he'd recorded approximately 35 versions of Thunder before settling on the track that opened Diamonds & Pearls. I'd bet the farm that it wasn't anywhere near the best version that saw the light of day.

Everyones gotta be realistic about it . Its gotta be his choice . i am a songwriter an have 100s of old recordings an songs which EMBARrESS the HELL OUTTA ME .an i wouldnt want anyone on gods earth to hear em ..an in a way it makes u think a bit about WHAT IF I GOT HIT BY A TRUCK ect .. the fact that family/people will rumage thru all these embaressing tapes ect ..an in most occasions will be pained by them .. not to mention home made porn lol . .. so i am sure that prince isnt no different to me or any other sonmgwriter . he will have made lots of mistakes an bad songs .. which he aint seen fit to show to the masses . yet he has not destroyed em . cos he keeps all his creations an learns from them . but i reckon that if he got told he had a week to live .. then he would destroy alot of these recordings from existence ..an keep the good ones . which he is proud of
thats exactly what i would do .. infact i mightaswell burn some tapes right now . just incase lol
whenever i want to hear some new music ...i make some - prince '99'

u will look down from heaven thinking .. i really wish i had emptied the trash b4 i departed ...

I"m intrigued by what tracks the vault contain... I know that the vault does contain tracks written and produced by Prince, recorded by other artists and associates. Those are the gems I would like to hear.

I do believe Prince will have it destroyed , he had his Purpl;e house destroyed when he moved so that his family wouldn't fight over it, and he doesn't have a child to leave it too, he knows his music will be mistreated, I can't say I blame him. It's a sad thought though.

What evidence do you have that supports your claim that Prince had his house destroyed to prevent his family fighting over it?

It's his right, as the creator of the music, to do with it as he sees fit.

Still, that doesn't make it any less misguided, selfish, moronic & revisionist to not take care of the music and let it be heard. He's often compared his songs to his children...these children are being shunned and neglected.

I think he should preserve everything in the vault, so he can leave his legacy for his child, if he has one in the future. Even if he never releases a song from the vault, it would be a shame to let it go to waste.

theyr probably shit mediocre songs.

i dont beleive that prince has thousands of great songs unreleased.

he releases what he thinks are his best songs.

thing is we love to listen to some stuff that has not been released. the black album imho is overrated due to the story behind it and the dirty sound of the tape back in the 80s.

1. For millionth time, there is NO vault!

2. The vault is just another Prince urban legend or a figment of his own overactive imagination!

3. If there is a vault, it is probably full of crap that nobody would have wanted to hear anyway!

4. If there is a vault, he's keeping it under wraps because he knows what's in there is so awful, even Timbabland wouldn't sample it!

5. If there is a vault, it'll be destroyed immediately upon his death because there is no way a control freak like Prince is going to let the world know he was capable of producing such utter garbage!

So do y'all think that'll tick him off enough to garner me an invite to tour the vault? giggle

I kind of understood where he was coming from though.

Even walking in there would be a heavy "responsibility".

I do know others who have been in there.

I still have not though.
