If you've grown up as the music has grown of course you can like both, I was a fan back in the day and I still love his music today.

razz I avoid the "either/or" scene as much as I possibly can. I love his old music and his new stuff. For me personally, it's a timeline of his growth as a person. My father, on the other hand likes old Prince. He's still pouty because he didn't play Purple Rain at the One Nite Alone concert in Chicago.

You are wrong. He was making great music from the start and he still does. Some of his newer material is equally as good as his older stuff, some of it isn't and some of it is superior!

Do you think fans often give Prince a Free Pass due to the respect they have for his talent and his career?

Any artist, using any medium, could easily admit to themselves and others, that some artistic expressions are better than others. If you simply use television as an example, some people would say that color tv is better, however, there is classic style to black and white.
So I suppose Prince as well as other artists have a free pass to be themselves as they grow. To add, moods are responsible for solidifying an idea. By the time anyone lays down a concrete mood, they are well on their way to another project. I am happy to have experienced, some of the stones of Prince's thoughts.

Sure u can. Like others have said their is no "new prince" only prince. He has been constantly evolving since day one and continues to this day "planet earth" is nothing like TRC so is TRC the old prince? Its simply silly to view his music like that.

Of course i do, that's what i'm such a big fan! I mean think about it. This "old prince" sound is now some 17 year old. IMO the last time he had that "old sound" assuming where talking about the 80's style/Style he had w/ wendy and lisa etc was on Graffiti Bridge. Ever since Diamonds and Pearls he hasn't done that style. I think if your still a fan after 17 years, atleast big enough to be posting on this website. It's clear that you like both styles.

Its interesting you said it like that cause thats exactly how I usually put it.

I said interesting cause most people say his old style ended before Graffiti Bridge but I have always seen Graffiti Bridge as the end of an era and Diamonds and Pearls as start of something else although I feel he was still doing consistant good stuff through to LoveSymbol I think upuntill LS his output was consistant I always felt the consistance standard dropped somehow from Come , then Chaos and Disorder. Im not say everything sucked after LS there's still been great stuff Im still a fan, Prince is absolutely brilliant there is no question he is one of the worlds greatest talents in music in the last hundred years. As for the question I still dig Prince totally I probably do have some bias towards his 80's or what I call his roll period which I feel went right up to 1992 but man Prince is Prince its the same guy so you gotta Love him. He is a blessing like George Clinton said ... Positive Nuisance lol.

When people first started using the term "Old Prince" was in 1985 when Prince changed his style and never went back to his old style. Old Prince has been and will always be Prince from 1978 to 1984. "New Prince" will always be from 1985 to the present because, no matter what changes he goes through, there are tons of ex Prince fans who dropped him within two or three albums after "Purple Rain" and just stopped keeping up with Prince at all except for attending concerts to hear the old hits.

Of course Old Prince from 1978-1984 will always be my favorite because it is the best music he ever made....period. It's cold, it's hard, it's funky, and best of all, there's no artsy/fartsy orchestras, jazz, or folk sounding shit in the music. Old Prince was strictly rock and funk with a few slow jams here and there. It was far less diverse and that's what makes it the best Prince music.

After Old Prince, then I would say I prefer the Prince from 1985-1989, although there are some dorky artsy/fartsy ass songs I absolutely can't stand to listen to during the "Parade" era such as "Do U Lie", "Sometimes It Snows In April", "Venus De Milo", "Alexa De Paris", etc., 1985-1989 would be my second favorite Prince era.

My third favorite Prince era would probably be the Prince of the 2000s.

My least favorite Prince era would be the Prince of the 1990s.

yes even tho i'm not crazy about planet earth, i still like his most recent output as much as his past output.
man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

syble

of corse you can like both as they are one and the same.

Prince music reflects the complexities of his character, no other artist can sing a rock ballard next to disco pop sound next to a boogaloo next to a funk song etc

His talent is immense.

I think people in the UK see an old prince and a new prince as there simply hasnt been any airplay for neary twenty years.

The only songs ever played are the old stuff as i guess they can cos of warner, plus prince shut us off by going on-line and not advertising that - so all you hear are purple rain - not often - crazy more regular on Kiss fm, most beautiful girl in the world - on jazz now smooth fm - its like thats all the radio stations have! but then UK radio is not very diverse with setlists that are played for months on end. Some people like this as they can relate to their memories of youth.

i only discovoured npgmc a few years ago and felt as though I had missed out for a huge section of my life, in the absence of prince in the uk (and not knowing about his fan club) i bought wendy and lisa music and also have npg.

the truth is that Prince thinks the whole world knows all his stuff but only in america and fams from the old npgmc who discovoured that, and now the whole worlds on-line - its time to share the wealth, those who lost touch with his music back in the 80s can now experience it all and so there is no old or new prince.

people who say that have not listened to it all and like someone else said, art cannot be regulated other than by reviews, so sometimes some tracks are better than others, the beauty being in the eye of the beholder or rather the music being in the ear of the listener! The only shame is that now that club has gone a huge prtion o his creativity is apparently lost to new fans as they cannot get hold of it - lets hope 3121 starts selling those 'lost' albums.

does that answer your question?

I d like to know when you discovoured prince?

Recently? hence the old and new idea?

or have you re-discovoured?
